Sonny Dykes on Max Gilliam
Does Gilliam walk in and compete, like Jared Goff? "We had Alan Bridgford was here, [Austin] Hinder was here, we had some older guys that had a little bit of experience. The difference is, Chase played some last year, but we've also got a new coordinator and we're making some adjustments in what we're doing, so in some ways, that evens the playing field for everybody."
What's Max's mindset? "The great thing about Max, he's a very competitive, tough-minded kid. I think that's been the thing that all of us have been able to see from him, is just his tough-mindedness. I think his athleticism has been impressive, for a young guy. What has to come for him is just learning the system, becoming confident, and that's always the process with the young quarterbacks, is, they all come out of high school and most of them kind of pound their chest and say they're ready to play, but down deep, they're like most freshmen -- they're just trying to find their way. Some guys come in and have some success, and all of the sudden, they get some confidence. We saw that's what happened with Jared about the third week of spring football. That first spring, he started kind of getting a little bit confident, and the same thing carried him into fall camp, and we found our guy. We'll see. That's the great thing, is, again, all of them are starting with a clean slate, and we're certainly not afraid to play a true freshman, if he's the best guy. We've done it before, and we'll do it again. We'll just have to see how it plays out."
