Cal announces signing of JuCo guard Dontae Coleman

Cal officially announces the signing of Lawson State Community College product Dontae Coleman.

Dontae Coleman has officially been announced as a California signee.

The 6-foot-4 guard from Augusta, Georgia is finishing up his freshman year at Lawson State Community College in Birmingham, Ala., and will enter Cal as a sophomore with three years of remaining eligibility for the Golden Bears.

Coleman committed on March 4 after being offered in late January. Coleman graduated from Augusta (Ga.) Butler as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,071 points.

“We’re excited to have Don join our program,” Martin said. “Don is a fast and quick guard who can both distribute and score with the basketball. He is capable of making teammates around him better.”

This past season at Lawson, Coleman led the Alabama Community College Conference in scoring with 19.9 points, shooting 47.7% from the floor, 42.6% from three-point range and 76.9% from the charity stripe, adding 4.4 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game.

Coleman was picked First-Team All-League (North Division) first team all-league (north division), scored at least 25 points on eight occasions as a freshman, including 46 against Action Sports Academy. He also had a 34-point game against Wallace State.\

Coleman led Butler in scoring each of his final three seasons, averaging 24.0 ppg as a sophomore, 24.5 ppg as a junior and 23.3 ppg his senior year, all while pulling down at least five rebounds per game every year. As a senior, Coleman shot 41.3 percent from 3-point distance and added 5.2 rpg, 2.3 apg and 1.9 steals per game as Butler finished with a 17-11 record.
