Highlights of Cal commit Alex Funches from his 2015 season at Trinity Valley

Highlights of new Cal commit Alex Funches, a defensive end out of Athens (Tex.) Trinity Valley Community College.

Last season, rush end Alex Funches made 22 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks for the Athens (Tex.) Trinity Valley CC Cardinals. He committed to Cal during his June official visit, with teammate and fellow Cal commit Da'Quan Patton, and went public on Wednesday morning. At 6-foot-4, 225 pounds, Funches is a long, lean defensive end who uses leverage and pad level to get around offensive tackles.

His long arms help him get into passing lanes, and while it would seem that they would make it difficult for him to disengage with blockers, that's not the case. He shows a lot of lateral quickness, and has the ability to fight though blocks using his hands. He's very explosive off the ball, but is patient athletic enough to read and react at the line, while being able to make up ground with his speed.

That speed stands out most in his kickoff coverage. It's not often that you have a defensive end who's able to run down on kicks, but Funches is built more like a big linebacker, and moves well in space. If necessary, he'd be the type who could drop back in coverage, or save a busted play.

He doesn't have a strong variety of pass rush moves, and needs to learn how to use his hands a bit more, but there is some ability in that regard. He just needs to be sharpened, as he already shows good instincts.
