Matt Anderson Named to Lou Groza Watch List

Junior Cal placekicker Matt Anderson -- who hit the game-winning boot against Arizona State last season -- has been named to the watch list for the most prestigious kicking award in college football.

California junior placekicker Matt Anderson was among 30 players named to the 2016 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award Watch List on Thursday, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission announced.

This is Anderson's first time on the list, and he becomes the first Bears kicker on the list since Vincenzo D'Amato was named a national semifinalist in 2013.

"I'm honored to have been selected for the 2016 Lou Groza Award Watch List," Anderson said of the award, named for the Pro Football Hall of Fame kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza. "I am looking forward to taking the field again with my teammates and executing my job when called upon."

Anderson took over as Cal's starting kicker in 2015, leading the team in scoring with 104 points (tied for the third-most in school history), and making 18-of-21 field goal attempts, to rank tied for third in the Pac-12 and tied for 10th nationally in field goal percentage (85.7%).

Anderson also put through 50-of-52 PAT attempts. He finished the season on a 10-for-10 run in field goals, and hit 15 of his final 16 three-point tries.

Anderson was also a first-team Pac-12 All-Academic choice as a sophomore, and has earned the Golden Bear Achievement Award from the school's Athletic Study Center at the Student-Athlete Academic Honors Luncheon, an award given to the Cal football player with the highest cumulative GPA for each of his first three seasons at Cal from 2013-15.

The Lou Groza Place-Kicker Award will announce 20 semifinalists Thursday, Nov. 3. Three finalists for the 25th annual award, presented by the Orange Bowl Committee, will be selected Tuesday, Nov. 22, and honored during a gala awards banquet in Palm Beach County on Sunday, Dec. 5. The winner will be presented during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Thursday, Dec. 8.
