BERKELEY -- California running back Tre Watson ripped off a 40-yard run on Wednesday, and fellow Cal running back Vic Enwere kicked in his extra gear to pull off an 80-yard touchdown rumble. Both of those runs, Watson said, came on inside run plays. Watson also talks about being in the Doak Walker Award watch list ("I've been dreaming of that award since I was born") and makes quite the boast about his speed.
Watson also chimes in on the defensive mindset that Garret Chachere brings to his new post as running backs coach, after some shuffling moved him over to the offensive side of the ball this offseason.
"We felt like it made a lot of sense to move Garret over there," said head coach Sonny Dykes. "It's what he's done before, it's what he's done in this offense before, for me at Arizona. He was a running back in college. It's the position he played, it's the position he's coached a lot. He's been one of those guys who's kind of bounced around -- he's coached on offense, coached on defense, been special teams coordinator, done a lot of different things. When we sat down and looked at our coaching staff, it made more sense to move him to running backs, and I think our running backs have been benefitted by it."
