Texas head coach Charlie Strong previews road match-up with Cal in Berkeley

Texas head coach Charlie Strong addresses the media ahead of the Longhorns' road trip to Cal.

Our Texas site,, was at Charlie Strong's press conference on Monday, where he previewed this Saturday's 7:30 p.m. tilt against California, last year's wild finish and injuries. Below are some notes from Taylor Estes, our Texas publisher, as well as the full video from the press conference.

  • Charlie Strong has arrived. He was pleased with the team's performance against UTEP. He commended WR Jacorey Warrick for his improvement this season.
  • He said it's a week by week process and the team has to improve each week. Strong said that Texas will face a big challenge on the road against Cal, in its home opener.
  • Strong thinks this team will handle this road game better than it did last year because it's an entirely new team. Texas has a group of seniors that understands where they are and what needs to be done. "We don't want to look back on last season because we're a different team than we were (in 2015)."
  • Strong has enough confidence in the backups because they want to prove that they can play.
  • The young guys on the team have helped changed the attitude of the older guys because of their level of confidence. The team as a whole has a "total different attitude right now."
  • The way Jerrod Heard played last year against Cal was exciting to watch for Strong. He said guys gravitate to him because of his personality and the way he carries himself.
  • Strong likes watching DE  Malcolm Roach and LB Breckyn Hager play because they play with so much energy and will give everything they have each play.
  • In recruiting Hager and Roach, Strong said he didn't think the guys were overlooked in the recruiting process, but more of players who he thought could develop into great players.
  • Strong said "all the starters" who missed last week would have been healthy to go if they needed it, but the staff chose to rest them so they didn't hurt themselves any further.
  • QB Shane Buechele never makes anything about himself. Strong said he has "a quiet confidence about him and he knows who he is."
  • The defensive staff is focusing on limiting yards after the catch and stopping the run. Strong believes the defense is getting better, but still has a lot of room to improve.
  • Strong said it will be interesting to take a young team into a hostile environment. He told the team they need to pack the defense and be a disciplined football team. "This is a business trip and we have to treat it like a business trip."
  • Hager and Roach were awarded "co-champions of the game" for their performance against UTEP.
  • RB D'Onta Foreman Foreman will be back for Cal.
  • Strong said the team can always get better and is looking to get better. He likes the progress on offense, how well they are moving the ball and the progress from the quarterback. The team has rallied behind the QB position.
  • The team needs to improve fundamentals and technique. Defensively, he wants the team to play with energy and to get more turnovers.
  • Jacorey Warrick is a hard worker and someone Strong feels really good about. "You know with him he's going to give you everything he's got."
  • Strong said Warrick has a great attitude and says nothing. "It's been fun to watch him grow."
