BTTV: Vic Wharton Back on Punt Return

BERKELEY -- Cal head coach Sonny Dykes has been disappointed in the punt return unit, but it gets a boost thanks to the return of Vic Wharton.

BERKELEY -- After missing a week with a lower body injury, receiver Vic Wharton will return this week in more ways than one, said head coach Sonny Dykes in his final media availability in advance of Saturday's 3 p.m. kickoff against No. 18 Utah.

Beyond providing another speedy option for quarterback Davis Webb, Wharton, the Tennessee transfer, will bolster a punt return unit that's been less than unproductive, averaging just a third of a yard per return.

Also back in the fold is Patrick Mekari, who will help "give a blow," to both Aaron Cochran and Steven Moore, line coach Brandon Jones said earlier this week.

Still in the air is the status of safety Evan Rambo and that of cornerback Darius Allensworth, but freshman corner Josh Drayden and redshirt freshman safety Jaylinn Hawkins have impressed this week, and should get a lot of run on Saturday.
