California offensive coordinator Jake Spavital, a source close to the program said, was hoping to get his next three quarterbacks all lined up by the end of this year. So far, he's 2-for-2, landing Chase Garbers for 2017, and now, on a rainy Sunday following the Big Game, he netted Clovis (Calif.) Clovis West 2018 signal-caller Adrian Martinez.
http://www.scout.com/college/california/story/1671878-adrian-martinez-ta... Martinez has been to three of the Bears' five home games this season, including Saturday's Big Game against Stanford.
"It was just the perfect fit with me and the coaching staff, and the school," Martinez told BearTerritory. "I was delaying it a little, but it was time. I think we can do great things."
Martinez received his offer from the Bears just over two months ago, after an impressive showing at the Elite 11 Regionals in Oakland, and during that interim, it's been evident that he and Cal were moving closer and closer together. While on the field at the Oregon game, it was apparent that something would happen sooner, rather than later.
Martinez has seen his recruitment explode since his first offers from Fresno State and Nevada back in April, and he now counts offers from Colorado, Miami, Utah, Missouri, Vanderbilt and Oregon State, and has become one of the hottest prospects in the 2018 class.
This season, the true dual-threat quarterback is 202-for-334 passing for 2,323 yards in 11 games, with 23 touchdowns to four interceptions. He's also the Golden Eagles' leading rusher, with 163 carries for 1,288 yards, averaging 117.1 yards per game.
