Jacob Isaia was building a rapport with Tony Tuioti during the brief time he was the defensive line coach at Fresno State.

Even though Fresno State and Tuioti have gone their separate ways, the Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman offensive lineman is still interacting with Tuioti – this time with California and playing for the Golden Bears as the two big topics of interest.

Tuioti was named Cal's newest outside linebacker coach on Feb. 25, leaving his post at Fresno State after nearly three months on the job. Tuioti made his mark on the recruiting trail for the Bulldogs by going after Utah, Hawaii, Nevada and California talent with a Polynesian connection, including the 6-foot-3, 272-pound Isaia.

Cal is yet to extend an offer to the three-star prospect Isaia, who is projected to move inside and play guard at the next level. But, Isaia told Scout he likes the conversations he’s having with Cal’s newest defensive assistant.

“He’s an island guy. He comes from the 808 like I do, so he knows my background and I know his,” Isaia said. “We talk about not just football, but being from Hawaii. It’s a good Polynesian connection.”

Isaia – whose father Sale played collegiately at UCLA before playing five seasons in the NFL – has reeled in nine scholarship offers, including two latest ones from San Diego State and the Bruins. UCLA is officially the second Pac-12 team in the mix to land Isaia, with Utah being the other.

Isaia recently competed at The Opening Los Angeles regional on March 12. He’s not only drawing rave reviews from coaches because of his run blocking prowess, but also his agile feet and academics. Isaia was clocked in at 5.15 in the 40-yard dash, plus holds a grade point average of above 3.0.

With nearly 10 offers, plus rising interest from Cal, when does Isaia plan to announce his college commitment?

“It’s a little far away. But I want to commit on either National Signing Day or, maybe, in April. It’s around that timeframe,” Isaia said.
