Denis Karas hits his third home run of the season in Cal's 4-1 win over Oregon

A pair of sparkling defensive plays and Denis Karas's third home run of the year power Cal's win over Oregon, with Joey Matulovich dealing on the mound.

BERKELEY -- California defeated Oregon on Sunday, 4-1, to salvage one game of a three-game series. Starting pitcher Joey Matulovich moved to 3-0 on the season, scattering six hits over 8.0 innings and allowing one run, striking out one with no walks. Matulovich induced 19 fly-outs on the game. He got sparkling defensive plays from Denis Karas at third, Cameron Eden at shortstop, center fielder Jonah Davis and right fielder Jeffrey Mitchell.

Offensively, Karas hit his third home run of the season in the eighth, and freshman left fielder Max Flower drove in his fifth run of the year with an RBI double in the second. Davis added an RBi single in the eighth.

Junior righty Erik Martinez earned his third save, striking out two in the ninth. He now has 12 in his career. He lowered his ERA to 0.93 in 2017, and has now struck out 14 batters in 9.2 innings of work.
