Kenny Churchwell (Blair Angulo)

Cal assistant Charlie Ragle stumps for Kenny Churchwell, who pulled down a Cal offer on Friday

Kenny Churchwell has now been offered twice by Charlie Ragle, with the second scholarship coming from Cal.

While a tight ends and special teams coach at ArizonaCharlie Ragle believed in Kenny Churchwell enough to be come the first coach to offer him a scholarship. When Ragle moved from Tucson up to Berkeley, to become the tight ends and special teams coach for California, he went to bat for Churchwell, again.

On Friday, the Phoenix (Ariz.) Mountain Pointe safety earned his third scholarship -- and second from Ragle -- as the Bears joined the Wildcats and Hawaii.

The offer still came as a surprise to Churchwell, who hadn't heard from Ragle since he changed employers. Ragle had kept things quiet, since he arrived at Cal just over two months ago, but he brought Churchwell's film up to the staff recently, and on Friday, head coach Justin Wilcox pulled the trigger.

Churchwell certainly doesn't hold it against him.

"[We have] a great connection," Churchwell said. "He was the first coach that offered, talk, and recruited me. He is a great coach and a great man."

Ragle, a former Scottsdale (Ariz.) Chaparral head coach, is plugged in to the Arizona high school football community, and knew that Churchwell would be a fit.

"[I'm] grateful and humble," Churchwell said. "He is a fantastic coach and I am thankful for him to fight for me."

Last season, he had 73 total tackles as a bruising safety, 5 interceptions (second on his team only to Isaiah Pola-Mao), 11 passes defended, 90 interception return yards and 2 forced fumbles.

"[They liked] how I go down to the ball with determination," said Churchwell, who has a 3.125 core GPA. "[They like] my speed and the way I tackle -- not being scared of nothing."

With three offers, every one is big for Churchwell, but he's seriously considering the Bears, and will visit both Cal and Arizona at some point during the summer.
