RICHMOND, Calif. -- Before he took home a ticket to The Opening Finals at Sunday's Opening Regional at Richmond (Calif.) De Anza, St. George (Utah) Desert Hills offensive lineman Penei Sewell paid a visit to California.
"It was fun, got to meet the coaching staff, the head coach, and got to meet up with Tony again, coach Tony," said Sewell, referring to the man who helped recruit him at Michigan, and then offered him while with Fresno State, before coming to Cal -- Tony Tuioti. "He's family, definitely. He's family."
"The people," Sewell said, stood out to him on his first visit to Berkeley, which lasted three hours. He took a campus tour, sat down with coaches and then grabbed a bite to eat, before coming back.
"I've just got to meet some of the players next time," he said. "I got to sit down with coach [Steve] Greatwood and the head coach. I got to meet them and talk to them."
Sewell spent 10 minutes sitting down with Greatwood, who initially offered him, and caught up with the veteran offensive line guru.
With 30 offers, the four-star Sewell said that every team is on the same footing, but he's about to start narrowing things down.
"I want to imagine myself playing there," Sewell said of what he's looking for in his finalists. "The area of the school -- is it safe and comfortable for me?"
How did the Bears score?
"I'd say up there," Sewell said. "At the end of the day, I've got to sit down with my family and pick and choose which ones are right for me."
