Geoff is currently leading the Pac-10 with 682 receiving yards, followed by James Newsome of Oregon State who has gained 550 yards. The skills of these two receivers will be on display at Memorial Stadium this Saturday.
Geoff, how did it feel to see Jonathan Makonnen have to step aside?
"Man, that was tough, he's such a contributor. I love having him on the field with me, he makes my job easier. But his foot just wasn't getting any better. He's been playing through it, being tough, but at some point you just don't want to risk further injury. I sure hope he get's his redshirt year."
At the media luncheon Tuesday, Coach Tedford reminded us that applications for redshirt status are submitted to the Pac-10 only much later in the season, so there will be no news on the issue for a while.
"Was it good to see Reggie succeed in th USC game?" I asked.
"Oh man, that was huge," said Geoff. "Reggie is such a good sport, he hasn't said anything about not being the starter, he has just worked hard and hung in there. It's so tough to just be humbler when you need to, and Reggie has just been there."
"He made a great pass to Makonnen in the end zone in overtime," I commented.
"Oh yeah, that was a thing of beauty. We looked at in on film, and you just can't see how that pass could have been thrown any better. The way it was thrown, even though he threaded the needle, no one else even had a shot at it, it was perfect."
I told Geoff that in the stands, when Reggie came in, we heard discouraging words, concern that Reggie couldn't do the job.
"Whatever the fans think, that's not how it is on the field. We all have a lot of confidence in Reggie, in each other, and in Aaron too. Whoever starts, whoever plays, we know they can get the job done."
"Geoff, in this game, you didn't put up the big numbers that you have in some other games."
"Yeah, that's true, but there's different ways to measure how good a job I do. I was given my assignments, and I tried to do them to the best of my ability. We don't have very many deep pass plays, and we don't run a lot of them each game - just enough to make a real deep threat and to keep the defense honest. Sometimes my job is to just get the first down - on a third down play - even if that doesn't make very many yards."
"And I made some of those in the USC game," Geoff says with a glance, "And one of those I made with an extra effort that I think helped the guys get pumped."
"Do you yet know what to expect against OSU?"
"It looks like their defense will be maybe more like Utah's - with more one on one coverage - so I expect to see some more downfield action."
