Oregon State 35 - Cal 21

<p class=txt>Coach Jeff Tedford has led the Golden Bears to several remarkable victories during his short tenure in Berkeley. However, thus far Cal has been unable to build on each success and has suffered a letdown the following week.

Last season, after the Bears upset #15 Michigan State on the road, Cal went home and lost to Air Force. After the Bears upset #12 Washington on the road, Cal went to Los Angeles and were nipped by #20 USC. After the Bears upset #25 Arizona State on the road, Cal went home and got clobbered by woeful Arizona. And now, one week after the Bears upset #3 USC in one of the most stunning victories in school history, Cal was dominated by Oregon State at Memorial.

OSU's 14-point margin of victory does not adequately convey how poorly the Bears played -- or how overmatched Cal was, whichever the case may be. Led by star tailback Steven Jackson, who was simply too big, too fast and too strong for the Bears, Oregon State's offense rolled up 493 yards to Cal's 237. The Beavers would have controlled the game to an even greater extent if they had not been flagged for 151 yards of penalties. Jackson outgained the Bears by himself with 35 carries for 227 rushing yards & 2 TDs and 2 receptions for 12 yards & 1 TD. Strangely, his total output was exactly the same as last season's effort against the Bears: 35 carries for 239 yards & 3 TDs. The big difference between the 2002 and 2003 games was that OSU quarterback Derek Anderson was very effective (18 of 27 for 224 yards & 2 TDs) on Saturday, as he improved sharply from a terrible effort last year (8 of 24 for 80 yards & 0 TDs). During the game's crucial junctures, the Cal defense simply had no answers for the Beavers' balanced attack.

On the other hand, OSU's had all of the answers on how to stop the Bears' passing game. QB Aaron Rodgers had one of the worst days of any recent Cal quarterback, and the list includes such notables as Justin Vedder, Wesley Dalton, Kerry McGonigal, Sam Clemons, and Kyle Boller as a freshman. From the start, it was clear that Rodgers was struggling mightily, and at no point did he hit his stride. His final gruesome statistics did not lie: 9 of 34 for 52 yards plus 1 lost fumble and 1 interception (and he was very fortunate only to have had one picked off), for the lowest Cal passing total since 1986. All you need to know about his day was that until the final play of the third quarter, the Bears' passing yardage and the Beavers' interception return yardage were even at 22.

In Rodgers' defense, the OSU front pressured him heavily and routinely, and the OSU defensive backs had tight coverage on our receivers all day. The loss of wideout Jonathan Makonnen, who is out for the season with a broken foot, undoubtedly also hurt. Moreover, Rodgers suffered several injuries in the USC game that may not have healed fully. Nevertheless, I was flabbergasted that Tedford did not insert backup Reggie Robertson into the game at any point, for Rodgers just was not getting the job done. After all, 1) Robertson played well as the starter until the first quarter of the Utah game, during which he was pulled (and has not started since); 2) Robertson saved the USC game with a poised and accurate performance off the bench (9 of 12 for 109 yards & 1 TD); and 3) Robertson entered the weekend as the ninth-rated quarterback in the nation in passing efficiency. Reggie is more experienced than Aaron, probably healthier, and the simple change of pace may have gotten the Beaver defense out of its groove. Although Tedford obviously knows a million times more about football than I do, I still couldn't believe that Reggie didn't get a shot to save the game. I honestly think he deserved it.

The Beavers started the game on a roll. OSU took the opening kickoff and marched 82 yards in nine plays with Anderson's 2-yard TD scramble capping the drive. Jackson began trampling the Cal defense by rushing five times for 28 yards and Anderson also hit WR James Newson for a 34-yard bomb. Just over four minutes into the game, OSU led, 7-0.

Rodgers' start foreshadowed the misery to follow, as he threw incompletions on Cal's first three plays from scrimmage. Until our final possession of the first half, the Bears' drive chart read punt, fumble, punt, punt, interception, punt. It was incredibly frustrating to watch, especially with Robertson clearly visible on the sidelines.

OSU punted on its second series, but the Beavers soon got the ball back. On third and 9 from the Cal 11, Rodgers fumbled the ball away at the end of a scramble. OSU recovered at the Cal 15 and took only three plays to score. Jackson did the honors on a 7-yard TD run, and the Bears quickly fell behind, 14-0.

After another Cal punt, OSU began driving again. The Beavers made it to the Cal 32 before freshman DB Daymeion Hughes stepped to the forefront. Hughes picked off a wayward Anderson pass over the middle and was off to the races for a 72-yard interception-return TD. It was a great play, but fittingly, on this day, even our positives were not all good: Hughes was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct by diving into the end zone with a flourish.

Because of the penalty, Cal had to kick off from the 20, and when Tyler Fredrickson's kick went out of bounds, OSU took over at midfield. Ouch. Jackson ran around the end for 38 yards. Jackson got stuffed at the line. Jackson ran again for 12 yards and a TD, this time on a nifty play where he ran parallel to the line of scrimmage, saw an opening, and burst untouched into the end zone. Just like that, our deficit returned to 14.

Like the Bears, the Beavers were nailed for unsportsmanlike conduct on the touchdown, and OSU also had to kick off from the 20. James Bethea broke loose on a 53-yard return, and Cal had great field position at the OSU 37. Once again, though, Rodgers threw three straight incompletions, including a miss of TE Garrett Cross, who was wide open. The Bears thus squandered a golden opportunity in fewer than 30 seconds, and Fredrickson had to punt.

When the first quarter ended, the numbers were not pretty. The Beavers had 198 yards of total offense to our 22. OSU had 10 first downs to our 1. Jackson already had 56 rushing yards. Rodgers was 1 for 7 for negative 2 yards. Quite frankly, Cal was somewhat fortunate to trail by only 21-7.

The Beavers drove 44 yards into Bear territory and threatened again, but safety Ryan Gutierrez tackled Jackson for a 3-yard loss on third and 2 from the Cal 37. After the OSU punt, Rodgers almost immediately relinquished possession back to the Beavers but linebacker Richard Siegler dropped a potential interception after a headfirst dive for the ball. Rodgers then had his first positive completion of the day, a 9-yard pass to WR Burl Toler. A couple of nice rushes by RB Adimchinobe Echemandu and a defensive holding penalty brought Cal to the OSU 38, but the turnover bug struck once again: on first down, Rodgers threw the ball directly to Beaver safety Mitch Meeuwsen, who returned the interception 22 yards to the OSU 36.

Francis Blay-Miezah had our only sack of the day, forcing OSU into a three-and-out. Cal return man Vincent Strang returned the punt 15 yards to the Cal 49, and the Bears got a first down at the OSU 46 after another defensive holding flag. But on first down, Rodgers overthrew an open Geoff McArthur inside the OSU 15, and on third down, he bounced his pass toward McArthur (who was open past the marker). Fredrickson had to punt, and the Bears had come up empty on a third consecutive possession inside OSU territory.

The frustrated Bears looked like they were becoming unglued when a 15-yard illegal-helmet contact penalty and a 15-yard roughing-the-passer penalty keyed the next OSU drive, a 10-play, 81-yard march. Anderson finished the drive on a 20-yard middle pass to TE Tim Euhus, who was all alone over the middle. OSU's lead burgeoned to 28-7 with 2:27 left in the half.

The Bears rallied, though, with a lot of help from the men in black and white -- both the officials and the OSU defenders. Starting from the 25, Echemandu ran for 27 yards on two plays to broach midfield. Then OSU was called for pass interference; the flag came late and, from the replay, was also unjustified. On the next play, Rodgers flung the ball up for grabs and CB Brandon Browner easily intercepted it. However, the officials nailed OSU for roughing the passer, negating the interception and giving the Bears another 15 yards to boot. On the next play, Rodgers made another bad decision, as he threw the ball as he was being tackled and it was almost intercepted again. Rodgers then tried to force a pass into double coverage, but we caught yet another break when the Beavers were nailed for a 10-yard holding penalty. A heads-up shovel pass to Echemandu gained 10 to the OSU 1, and Adimchinobe then punched the ball in for a TD with 0:52 remaining. At the break, the Bears were down, 28-14, despite being outgained, 294-98. We had OSU's one turnover and many of the Beavers' 76 penalty yards to thank for our two touchdowns.

Cal's tendency to have a first-half feast or famine continued. In our three victories over Southern Mississippi, Illinois, and USC, the Bears walloped opponents to the tune of 62-16 and our smallest halftime lead was 14. In our four losses to Kansas State, Colorado State, Utah, and Oregon State, Cal has been outscored by a total of 93-42 and our smallest halftime deficit was 10. The Bears made the Colorado State and Utah games exciting, and for a short time in the third quarter, Cal gave the fans hope against OSU. Noting Rodgers' H1 passing stats (4 of 16 for 22 yards & 1 INT), the Bears kept the opening Q3 drive exclusively on the ground. Echemandu rushed for 33 and 23 yards, Rodgers added a 16-yard scramble, and Cal converted two fourth-and-short plays, the second of which came on fourth and 1 from the 2. Echemandu leapt over the pile, extending the ball past the goal line, and the Bears closed to within 28-21 with 8:55 left in Q3.

The Bears needed a defensive stop to retain momentum, but it was not forthcoming. On second down from the 20, Jackson galloped down the sidelines for 66 yards until Hughes pushed him out of bounds. Five plays later, Anderson passed the ball over the middle to Jackson for a 5-yard TD, and the Beavers' lead returned to 14 with 6:01 remaining in the third quarter.

As it turned out, that was the last score of the game. OSU had answered swiftly and emphatically, and Cal did not seriously threaten thereafter. The Bear defense prevented the Beavers from extending the lead, though Jackson kept running to wind down the clock and padded his stats in the process. After the two-touchdown flurry, Cal's offense stagnated once again. Our last five possessions went punt, punt, punt, downs, and downs, and on three of those series, we gained an aggregate of 4 yards. The Bears only crossed midfield once, but the drive ended when Rodgers' fourth-and-1 pass from the OSU 42 fell incomplete. Fittingly, our last possession ended when Rodgers threw four consecutive incompletions. His second-half numbers (5 for 18 for 30 yards) were about as bad as those from the first.

My final rant for the week is reserved for OSU punt cover man Jamaal Jackson, whom I feel should be suspended for at least one game. Early in the fourth quarter, when the game was pretty much decided, Strang was standing still and looking up for a punt from OSU. The ball wasn't even close to landing yet when Jackson, at full speed, launched himself into our 5'8", 150-pound return man and just leveled him in an unconscionable cheap shot. The smallest guy on the field was in the most vulnerable position possible and this jerk could have seriously injured him. Strang was down for several minutes before he got up, and that he was OK was of little consolation. There's physical football, and there's just plain dirty football, and this move showed how OSU plays. One of my friends told me that he has seen the Beavers do that before, with the intent being to intimidate the opponent. It's too bad, because I would like to root for OSU (our traditional partner in the cellar), but if that's part of the Beaver M.O., then screw them.

Notes:
* The Cal-OSU series has been very streaky. Cal won six straight from 1977-83, OSU won five straight from 1984-89, Cal won six straight from 1991-98, and OSU has now won five straight from 1999-2003. That means Cal should win the next six, starting on October 2, 2004!
* Echemandu just missed setting a new career high in rushing yards. After his 34-carry, 147-yard, 1-TD effort against USC, Adimchinobe followed up with a stellar 19 rushes for 146 yards and 2 TDs. For over half of the game, Echemandu was virtually the entire Cal offense, as he accounted for 115 of the Bears' first 131 yards. Marcus O'Keith carried the ball twice, and I don't remember seeing J.J. Arrington on the field - if he did appear, he was very quiet.
* I like Strang, but when he leads the team in receptions with 3 and yards with 25, you know we are in big trouble. Former national receiving leader Geoff McArthur caught only 1 pass for 13 yards and dropped one when he took a tremendous hit near the sidelines. There isn't much else to say except that it was just a horrible day for our passing game.
* The crowd of 39,150 included a large throng of orange-clad Beaver fans who became progressively louder as the visitors pulled further ahead. We saw them everywhere - at the Oakland Hilton sports bar on Friday night, at Kip's on Saturday, and even on the BART train on Sunday morning. After years of watching their team dwell in the Pac-10 cellar, the OSU fans are living large right now. In fact, the 4-1 Beavers are now ranked #24 by AP and #25 in the coaches' poll.

The Bears now enter the bye week with a chance to lick their wounds and get ready for UCLA, which upset then-#18 Washington with a 39-0 run in the second half en route to a 46-16 blowout win. I will be heading to Pasadena for that game and probably will not return until Monday, so the next report will be later than usual. Hopefully, we can regroup in the hallowed Rose Bowl.

Go Bears! Beat the Bruins!
