2003 Pac-10 BB Preview: #10 OSU

The 2002 season was a moderately successful first year for Coach Jay John in Corvallis where he guided OSU to 13 wins, including 6 in the Pac-10 conference. Six wins might not sound great given that OSU played 19 total games in the 'Conference of Champions'. Nonetheless, it was quite an accomplishment. Those six wins earned OSU a tie for 6th place, and thus, the 6th seed in the Pac-10 tournament after a tiebreaker.

Head Coach: Jay John (2nd Year)
Assistants: Brian Loyd, Kevin Mouton, Jeff Reinert

2002-03 Pac-10 record: 6-12 (finished 8th)
2002-03 Overall record: 13-15
2002-03 Highlight: Sweeping the season series versus USC; winning 4 straight Pac-10 games including a win at Pauley Pavilion over the Bruins.

Tying for sixth is the best any Oregon State basketball team has finished in the league since the Beavers tied for fifth during the 1992-93 Season.

With those accolades Jay John might have done the best coaching job in the Pac-10 even if the actual Coach of the Year honors were split between Stanford's Mike Montgomery and John's old boss, Arizona's Lute Olson. Coach John found a way to bring a troubled program together. Frontcourt players rebounded, and backcourt guys played the passing lanes. OSU's three senior starters of Jimmy Haywood, Philip Ricci, and Brian Jackson not only contributed, they became leaders for the younger Beavers. In fact, Brian Jackson is now a graduate assistant at OSU. Jay John had the Beavers playing focused, energized, and playing with purpose for 40 minutes on most nights. He instructed the Beavers to forget about the scoreboard and just go out and compete. In one season, he turned an entire program around.

In 2003-04 John and his Oregon State staff face as tough a challenge as they'll likely ever have in Corvallis. With a 12-player transition (6 players gone and 6 newcomers in), Oregon State basketball is headed in a very different direction. The six departing players accounted for 68% of the team's total points, 57% of the team's total rebounds, and another 57% of the team's total minutes played. Given that the team averaged 68 points per game last year, that means just 21 points back in 2003-04. OSU has only three players remaining who played more than 15 minutes per game a year ago. Despite all this, John is confident about his squad.

"This is a very exciting time for this program," John said. "We are young, no doubt about that. But we also have athleticism that we didn't have last season. This is truly a transition year for Oregon State basketball."

Everything about Oregon State basketball this year starts with point guard Lamar Hurd, OSU's only returning starter. Last year, Hurd started all 28 games, averaged 33 1/2 minutes per game, and finished 5th in team points, 3rd in rebounding, and 1st in assists. Hurd capped off his 1st season in Corvallis with an Honorable Mention to the All-Freshman Pac-10 team.

"If you can have only one returning starter on a youthful team, the point guard position would be your first choice," John says. "Lamar has always played more mature than his age, and that is a huge plus for this team."

Hurd, a native of Houston, TX, finished 7th in Pac-10 assists-per-game but will have to improve his turnover-to-assist ratio. He's also a work in progress as a shooter. A player who will help Lamar develop in practice is Jason Fontenet, an ultra-quick point guard who transferred in from New Mexico State, leaving behind his twin-brother James. Fontenet will sit out this year, but will give the Beavers a promising young player for next year. Joining Hurd in the likely starting backcourt is J.S. Nash, a junior guard who has the most experience of any player still on the roster. Nash has played in 55 total games, including 20 starts in his first two seasons. He brings both scoring and toughness to the court. Unfortunately, Nash, whose initials do not stand for a full name, has struggled with shot selection and defense. If Nash struggles like he did last year in the early season, Coach John could turn to sophomore Chris Stephens, a Portland native. Stephens is regarded as the best outside shooter in the OSU program, and along with Hurd is the only other returning player who got court time in 2002-03. Stephens wore down as the Pac-10 season progressed, not uncommon for true freshman. He'll need to improve his stamina, but there is a lot of Jimmy Haywood in his game. Helping out off the bench will be Angelo Tsagarakis and Vic Remmers, the latter a walk-on with two-guard size. Tsagarakis (pronounced SOCK-ah-ROCK-us) is a French native who moved to Santa Rosa in Northern California just a year ago. He's a well-regarded shooter that John hopes will stretch opponent's defenses.

The Beavers learned quickly how difficult it was for them to compete without solid wing player depth. The Jarman Sample experiment failed after just 8 games, so the top priority this off-season was to recruit and sign both a solid JC wing and a prep HS wing who can give Oregon State an experienced player that can play now, plus give a younger recruit the time to develop. Enter Jim Hanchett and Kenny Hooks, two players east of the Mississippi who are now a long way from home. Hanchett (pronounced HAN-sett) has so far lived his life on roller-skates, attending three different high school's due to his father's occupation in the U.S Army. After graduating HS, Hanchett played one year at Utah Valley State before serving an LDS mission in Brazil. He's married, 22 years old as of early November, and a strong small forward with good rebounding skills. Hanchett already has excellent ties with the program too, having played for current OSU assistant Jeff Reinert during his freshman year at Utah Valley State as well as enrolling last spring in Corvallis. Hooks was the 2nd 'fall-out' recruit landed by OSU in consecutive years, with Lamar Hurd waiting till very late in the summer before deciding to play for the Beavers as well. Like Hurd, Hooks was a fantastic HS student who just didn't find the right fit until Oregon State came calling. He brings a very athletic game, and lands in a reserve spot that should be perfect for him as he develops. Another player often forgotten in the OSU picture is Michael Johnson, another Portland-native who is the son of OSU legend Steve Johnson.

"This program will benefit immensely from the addition of these individuals," John said. "Hanchett and Hooks are complete players and are among the top athletic forwards at OSU in several years, while Johnson has worked diligently on his game and should be a much improved player."

The Paint is where Oregon State will need to catch a break, as the development of Kevin Field, Liam Hughes, or Derek Potter must take place if OSU is to win more than 5 Pac-10 games this season. Both Potter and Field are sure to gain experience this year, but both are terribly unskilled and foul compulsively under the rim. Hughes has the best size of the three, and played against top-flight talent for the past three years at Modesto Christian in California. However, his post skills are limited. Hughes has an effective jump hook from the right baseline but has yet to face up and shoot the ball. He's also very slow. Look for Field to start, but don't be surprised if Hughes takes over at some point. Of the three, Liam has the best upside. Jay John might elect to go with Kyle Jeffers and David Lucas for large portions of the game since both are athletic and good on the boards. Lucas is truly the pivot player on OSU's roster this year as he takes up nearly all the frontline scoring responsibility. David is the son of NBA & ABA legend Maurice Lucas, and he made major progress towards the end of last season. A quick jumper who has a soft touch, Lucas could raise his 61/2 ppg in 2002-03 to nearly 15 ppg.

The Beavers will probably finish in 10th place this season in the Pac-10 because they definitely lack experience. OSU does have young talent in the likes of Hurd and Lucas, but they have no seniors on the squad. The Beavers have a solid coach who will guide them well, and if Liam Hughes, Kyle Jeffers, and Kenny Hooks can bring some stability to the frontcourt during the second half of the Pac-10 schedule, OSU might sneak in as the 8th seed to the Pac-10 tournament. That would be a major success for this team.

This will be a team to watch in 2005.
