UCLA 23, Cal 20 (OT): The Whole Story

Somehow, Cal and UCLA football ended up with the same marketing slogan (True Blue) for 2003. Since the Bruins stole our fight song and copied our mascot, my guess is that they also swiped our advertising campaign. Worse yet, UCLA lifted something far worse from us at the Rose Bowl, a victory.

Even though the Bears deserve kudos for their heroic last-minute rally that forced overtime, the game was aggravating to watch. Cal had a 397-228 advantage in total yards, crossed into UCLA territory on 10 of its 12 possessions during regulation, did not commit a turnover, and controlled the time of possession 35:54-24:06, and yet the Bears trailed virtually the entire game. There was no mystery why we lost, though, as the culprits were easy to spot: terrible placekicking and offensive ineffectiveness once Cal crossed midfield.

 • Placekicking woes. My lasting memory will be of Tyler Fredrickson hitting the left upright on a 50-yard attempt in overtime, ending the game and touching off a jubilant on-field celebration by the powder-blue players, coaches, and fans. But the most telling statistic of the game will also stick in my craw: the Bears and Bruins scored an identical number of points on Cal's six field-goal attempts. Fredrickson had an equal distribution of conversions (2), misses (2), and kicks blocked (2), and one of the latter was returned for a crushing touchdown. His two blocked kicks had low trajectories, and Fredrickson has now had four of his last nine attempts blocked in a season in which he has made only 44% of his attempts (8-18). I don't know how backup Lucas Everett performs in practice, but it may be time to give him a longer look. If Everett is more accurate, then try him in game situations, even if his leg is not as strong as Fredrickson's.
 • Offensive inefficiency. The Bears moved the ball fairly easily between the 30-yard lines. The issue was that Cal rarely passed the UCLA 30, and that led to more field-goal attempts, and that was not a good thing (see problem #1). Mistakes, including an array of penalties and sacks, constantly put the Bears in long-yardage situations from which they could not recover. On our first six possessions that reached the UCLA 30, 30, 47, 17, 39, and 17, Cal faced (in order) third-and-19, second-and-14, second-and-17, third-and-16, third-and-18, and third-and-16 situations. The Bears could not convert any of those into first downs. Except for a 5-yard touchdown "drive" after a UCLA fumble, Cal only scored 6 points in the first 58 minutes even with a decent 327 yards of total offense. That pretty much defines inefficiency.

The keys to the game were the UCLA defense and punter Chris Kluwe. In addition to stifling the Cal running game, the Bruin defensive line consistently harassed Rodgers, and he was sacked five times while running for his life seemingly all afternoon. The Bruin linebackers and secondary also appeared to cover well, as often Rodgers could not find anyone to whom to throw the ball even when he had some time. I am not a football expert and thus cannot say definitively whether Rodgers suffered from happy-feet syndrome (as one friend suggested) or whether his field vision was lacking and he did not see any open receivers (as I thought on a few occasions). The bottom line, though, was that the Bears had trouble reaching the red zone and did little on the rare times they made it that far. Kluwe helped the defense tremendously; he boomed most of his kicks, including a 58-yarder from the UCLA 6, en route to a 45.6-yard average, preventing Cal from getting good field position.

Coming off the bye week, the Bears started well and looked like they would strike first. But in a pattern that repeated throughout the game, a once-promising drive produced no points. QB Aaron Rodgers completed his first pass to WR Geoff McArthur for a catch-and-run 39-yard gain, thereby surpassing Rodgers' passing yardage for the first three quarters against Oregon State. Another McArthur reception gained 11 yards to the UCLA 30, but then things turned sour. A substitution infraction cost Cal 5 yards, RB Adimchinobe Echemandu rushed twice and lost 2 yards both times, a screen pass to Echemandu got only got 5 yards back, and Fredrickson missed a 51-yard FG attempt wide right. As it turned out, that drive was a microcosm of the game.

The Bruins took a 7-0 lead on their first possession after moving 66 yards on 7 plays. QB Drew Olson, who took over as the starter when Matt Moore was injured, completed a 14-yard pass to WR Craig Bragg on third-and-8, a 21-yard pass to WR Junior Taylor on third-and-12, and a 31-yard TD pass to TE Marcedes Lewis over the middle.

Cal responded with a 57-yard drive comprised entirely of short gains, with the largest chunk coming on a 15-yard personal foul facemask penalty on the UCLA defense. A sack bogged down the march, though, and Fredrickson converted a 47-yard field goal to close the UCLA lead to 7-3 with 2:51 left in Q1.

Neither team scored for the remainder of the first half, though both squads squandered opportunities. As mentioned earlier, Cal's offense moved the ball well until it reached UCLA territory. A conservative Rodgers screen pass to Echemandu lost 3 yards on third and 12 and forced Fredrickson to punt from midfield. A 34-yard Fredrickson field-goal attempt was blocked by Bruin linebacker Spencer Havner. And two incompletions sandwiched a sack and delay-of-game penalty, killing a drive to the UCLA 39. The Bruins had an 82-yard touchdown run by RB Tyler Ebell wiped out by a holding penalty. On the plays that counted, the Cal defense totally shut them down, with UCLA's offense generating negative 7 yards on its three meaningful possessions (excluding the one at the end of the half) and Olson attempting only 1 pass that fell incomplete.

As in the first half, UCLA's offense had a great drive on its first possession of the second half and accomplished little thereafter. To start the third quarter, the Bruins covered 80 yards on 7 plays, with the big blows being a 28-yard reception by Taylor and a 40-yard Olson-to-Lewis touchdown bomb to build the UCLA lead to 14-3. On UCLA's other five possessions of H2, the Bruin offense was scoreless. They did reach as far as the Cal 33 and 29 but huge sacks by Tosh Lupoi (-15 yards) and Joe Maningo (-10 yards) cratered each drive. Overall, the Bruins only mustered 70 net yards for the rest of the game, including overtime.

Meanwhile, the Cal offense got untracked a little bit, as the Bears answered the Bruin touchdown with a field goal. Cal picked up first downs on four consecutive plays in driving to the UCLA 17, but after a sack and two incompletions, the Bears had to settle for a 39-yard Fredrickson field goal to narrow the gap to 14-6.

Thanks to the defense, the Bears hit paydirt shortly thereafter. Monte Parson chased down Olson for a 21-yard sack and, better still, jarred the ball loose for Wendell Hunter to recover at the UCLA 5. Rodgers scored on a 2-yard quarterback draw, and Cal closed within 14-12. The Bears went for a two-point conversion and a tie, but Rodgers' pass toward McArthur was overthrown and Cal's deficit remained at 2.

In rapid succession, Cal lost two chances to capture excellent field position. Cornerback James Bethea dropped a potential interception around the UCLA 30 -- the ball was somewhat behind him but still appeared catchable. On the ensuing Bruin punt, return man Vincent Strang took the ball almost 30 yards to the UCLA 34 but an illegal-block-in-the-back penalty pushed the Bears back to their own 29.

Near the beginning of the fourth quarter, UCLA appeared to deal Cal a fatal and demoralizing blow. Fredrickson lined up for a 41-yard field goal attempt but once again Havner blocked his kick. Backup QB/holder Reggie Robertson leapt in the air for the ball and perhaps momentarily had it in his grasp. However, UCLA's Brandon Chillar emerged from the scrum with the ball and raced 65 yards for a touchdown. With the way the Cal offense was struggling, a two-score UCLA lead in Q4 would have been almost insurmountable. The Bruins obliged, though, by blowing the extra point on a bad snap and a subsequent unsuccessful run by the holder Kluwe.

UCLA had a couple more opportunities to put the game away but could not do so. First, the Bruins drove to the Cal 29 but Maningo sacked Olson on third down, pushing UCLA out of field goal range. With under 2 1/2 minutes remaining, the Bruins also could have run out the clock with one more first down, but they failed on third and 3. In fact, Cal got the best of both worlds when UCLA tried a passing play that fell incomplete, enabling the Bears to save their last timeout.

After Kluwe's punt, the Bears took over at their own 32 with 2:10 left. When an offensive holding penalty and a sack mired Cal in a second and 28 at the 14, the situation looked very bleak. But a dump over the wide-open middle to Echemandu gained 18 yards, and on third down Rodgers hit WR Burl Toler with a 21-yard pass to the UCLA 47. Another pass over the middle to Echemandu picked up another 12 yards, and Cal had a first down at the 35. The Bears went nowhere, though, and soon faced fourth and 10. It was do or die, and Cal lived a little longer. Rodgers found Toler for a 35-yard TD pass on which Burl caught the ball at the 2 and fell into the end zone with the clock reading 0:11. Now Cal needed the all-important 2-point conversion, which Rodgers executed on a pass to Echemandu. The Bears had tied the score at 20, and it was on to overtime.

"The fifth quarter is ours!"

Well, no, actually, and it never has been. The Bears have now played seven overtime games, and are 4-0 when there were three or more overtimes and 0-3 when there were fewer. Extra periods #1 and #2 have been about simply surviving, and on Saturday, we couldn't.

UCLA took the ball first and could only muster one yard on three plays before calling on PK Justin Medlock to attempt a 41-yard field goal. Medlock split the uprights and gave the Bruins a 23-20 lead.

As bad as the Bruins' sequence was, the Bears' series was worse. Echemandu ran for a yard, Rodgers threw an incomplete pass, and then disaster struck on third down: Rodgers was scrambling from the pass rush and flipped the ball to Echemandu behind the line of scrimmage. Echemandu, trying to make something happen, ran backwards and all the way across the field until he was tackled for a 9-yard loss. That meant Fredrickson had to try a 50-yard attempt to keep Cal alive. Tyler's leg strength has never been a question, and his kick had plenty of distance... but hit the left upright and bounced excruciatingly away. My friends and I stood in the stands in silent disbelief for several moments before quietly filing for the exit while the UCLA fans went nuts.

What a bummer. But honestly, the loss was not as disappointing as other close defeats because I didn't get my hopes up too much. To me, it was 58 minutes of frustration, followed by 2 minutes of excitement, followed by more frustration at the end, and somewhere in there we almost snatched a victory from the jaws of defeat. Someday, hopefully soon, the team will learn to close out games like UCLA, Utah, and Colorado State. We are just not there yet.

Other notes:

 • UCLA has the 114th-rated offense in the nation, but you still have to stop them, and Cal did a credible job. Even if the secondary did yield a few big plays, you cannot complain too loudly when your defense gives up only 14 points on the road against a conference opponent. Outside of the two scoring drives, Olson was only 3-of-9 for 32 yards, and running backs Ebell, Maurice Drew, and Manuel White were held to an average of 4 yards per carry. The Bears had six sacks, including two by Parson and one each by Lupoi, Maningo, Ryan Riddle, and Tom Sverchek.
 • Because our own running game was scuffling, with Echemandu being held to a 2.8-yard average on 15 carries, J.J. Arrington actually played for the first time in weeks. Though the results -- four yards on two rushes -- were lacking, the PT did represent progress for Arrington. I don't remember reading anything about him being injured, so I assumed that he was previously benched for his earlier fumble problems.
 • Rodgers bounced back from the Oregon State debacle with a respectable 28-of-41, 322-yard, 1-TD, 0-INT effort. Wideouts McArthur and Toler had big days with 128 and 104 receiving yards respectively. And yet, for the second straight game, our offense was generally ineffective until the end of regulation. I have given up wishing for Robertson to return, for it is clear that Tedford has no intention of playing Reggie unless Rodgers gets injured. A couple of my friends have suggested that Tedford is sacrificing this season to develop Rodgers, but it isn't lost yet, and Robertson is still only a junior.
 • It was a hot day at the Rose Bowl, with the thermometer reading 93 degrees at kickoff. The crowd was announced at 53,825, which barely filled over half of the stadium, but it sure seems like more people are there when you're driving into the stadium amidst heavy Pasadena traffic.

Cal is an 18.5-point favorite against Arizona this weekend, and I am amazed at that spread. The Wildcats had lost six straight conference games before beating us by 11 (as 16.5-point underdogs) in 2002 and had lost ten straight conference games before beating us by 14 in 2001. Cal has not defeated Arizona since the quadruple-overtime game in 1996 and now must get a victory to keep any bowl hopes alive. Cal can get the win if the team avoids overconfidence and plays hard.

Go Bears! Beat Arizona!
