2002-03 Pac-10 record: 5-13 (finished in 9th place)
2002-03 Overall record: 10-17
2002-03 Highlight: Though the events happened a month apart, home wins over NCAA Tournament-bound Stanford and Oregon were the highlights of the season for the young Huskies, sometimes called the "youngski's" by Washington fans. With five freshmen playing many minutes last year, UW fans saw an up-tempo and exciting brand of basketball that upended the Cardinal by 5 points, the Ducks by 12.

Best Washington quote from last year:

"I'm not comparing Nate Robinson to Jason Kidd at Cal, but when I was at UCLA, we had the same kind of problems preparing for Jason as teams will now have with Nate. He's a guy that gets loose balls and offensive rebounds and gets everyone to play harder. How do you scout that? He still doesn't totally know our system, but he has already added a lot to this team."

- 1st year coach Lorenzo Romar talking about freshman Nate Robinson, who energized the Huskies program by playing point guard like a blitzing free safety. Robinson came off a stellar first football season as a Husky cornerback and quickly made the transition to the hard-court. After his success on the basketball court, Robinson decided to quit football and focus entirely on basketball.

Key Losses:
Doug Wrenn 6'6 215 (12.4 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 1.9 apg) - left after junior year, declared for the NBA
Marlon Shelton 6'9 280 (1.2 ppg, 1.1 rpg) - departing senior; graduated

David Hudson 5'10 210 (2.3 ppg, 0.1 rpg, 0.2 apg) - transfer after 2002-03 sophomore season
Jeffrey Day 6'9 235 (3.9 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 0.6 apg) - dismissed from school for academic reasons

Recruiting Class:
SG - Tre Simmons 6'5 195 Jr - transfer Green River CC - pure scorer who averaged 29.8 ppg last year
PF - Hans Gasser 6'10 230 Fr - Issaquah HS, Issaquah WA - averaged 21 ppg and 10 rpg as senior
PF - Hakeem Rollins 6'8 235 Jr - transfer from Mesa JC - Arizona native who will see solid minutes
SF - Jamaal Williams 6'6 220 Jr - transfer from New Mexico - Eligible in 2004-05

Projected Starting Five (returning starters in Bold):
PG - Nate Robinson 5'8 170 So (13.0 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 2.3 apg) - All Pac-10 Freshman;
SG - Will Conroy 6'1 190 Jr (13.0 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 4.0 apg, 1.2 spg) - 45% FG, 39% 3-Ptr's
SF - Bobby Jones 6'6 200 So (5.7 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 0.6 apg) - 2nd in offensive rebounding last year
PF - Hakeem Rollins 6'8 235 Jr - transfer from Mesa JC - Arizona native who will see solid minutes
C - Anthony Washington 6'9 245 So (5.9 ppg, 4.4 rpg) - solid 1st year for key interior UW player

Key Returning Reserves:
SG/SF - Brandon Roy 6'5 195 So (6.1 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 2.8 apg) - played in 13 games in 2002-03
PF - Mike Jensen 6'8 230 So (5.9 ppg, 3.9 rpg) - Averaged 23.9 mpg last year; 22 starts
PG - Curtis Allen 6'0 170 Sr (9.7 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 1.6 apg) - Pac-10 leader at 95% free throw percentage
C - Ben Devoe 6'11 260 So (2.3 ppg, 1.6 rpg) - walk-on in 2002; red-shirt soph; re-joined team in Jan

Along with former UCLA player turned assistant coach Cameron Dollar, Romar set out to fill a number of weaknesses in the program. He quickly signed two local players, Anthony Washington and Brandon Roy from Garfield High, Seattle's top basketball school, and Bobby Jones was added from California, Romar's home state. The Huskies already had a red-shirt freshman aboard, Mike Jensen, who did not play for Bender on 2001-2, and when another frosh came in on a football scholarship (Nate Robinson) the youth tally soared. Then a sixth freshman, Ben Devoe, joined the team after Romar pulled a scholarship that had been offered to another player by the previous coach.

So with six first-year players on the squad, it was clear that the Huskies would struggle during Romar's first season in Seattle. The team earned a 10-17 record overall, going 5-13 in the Pac-10 and landing a ninth place finish. UW was 2-10 on the road (1-8 in Pac-10), and they didn't get that sole conference road win until March 6th at USC in the next to last game of the season. The Huskies won just 4 of their final 16 games, but hung tight in the race for the Pac-10 tournament's eighth seed until the last game of the season when they lost to UCLA.

"We didn't win as many games last year as we would have liked, and we took our lumps," said Coach Romar. "We would like to think as a result of taking our lumps last year, it's going to pay dividends this year because we will be more experienced."

So the youngest team in the conference last year is now a year older. Coach Romar added two JC transfers and a third junior transfer from the disorderly New Mexico program, taking steps to increase the experience quotient of the team. Notably, despite the added year and the three new juniors, the Huskies will again have just one senior on the squad. The team almost seems to stay the same age year after year.

Unquestionably the leaders of the UW program are sophomore bulldog Nate Robinson and junior combo guard Will Conroy, both Seattle area preps. Robinson and Conroy will be the most interesting starting backcourt in the conference with their adaptability and speed. The diminutive Robinson is a shoot-first guard who plays the point only when he brings the ball up the court - and at times last year he got seriously out of control and made poor shot choices. Nevertheless "sparkplug" describes Robinson better than any other guard in the Pac-10. Both aggressive and strong, Nate plays sideline to sideline like he's still on the gridiron. It will be interesting to see how improved Robinson's game management and shot selection will be after a full summer of college basketball practice.

Of the two, Conroy is the better passer and the offense run more smoothly when he's in charge.

Behind both starters at guard is senior Curtis Allen, a Tacoma-native who is used as a three-point shooter, and newcomer Tre Simmons. Allen has more starts than anyone else on the team, and lead the conference in free throw percentage last year, missing just two shots from the charity stripe all year. Simmons is a high-energy scorer who is now at his third school in 3 years, having transferred from Odessa JC to Green River CC to UW. He is originally from Seattle and was the starting backcourt mate of Will Conroy at Garfield HS, thus giving the Huskies 4 Garfield graduates on their current roster. Simmons averaged nearly 30 points per game at Green River CC last year, so he can fill it up.

Bobby Jones and Brandon Roy will split time at the wing in 2003-04, similar to what they did last year in the last 13 games. Roy wasn't eligible until the last dozen games and some thought he'd just red-shirt, but since he's flirted with NBA dreams since leaving high school, it's probably good that Romar got him some court time. Jones is a true slasher who put in some impressive minutes for Romar last year, and he excelled at getting to the line. Though Roy is smaller, he's more adept at the post than Jones, and will give the Huskies some interesting alternatives on offense. Both Jones and Roy are excellent rebounders. Roy is multi-talented; if his outside shot improves from last year when he was just 1 of 10 on the trifecta, Roy could make defenders think twice about playing so close to him. If that doesn't happen, expect Jones to see more time since he's adept at drawing fouls.

In the frontcourt, sophomore Anthony Washington will be the Huskies top lane presence. Washington, who signed with former coach Bender in the winter of 2000, played very well at times last year and started 12 games for the Huskies. Unfortunately, his season ended after 21 games due to a foot injury. After signing in 2000, Washington had to re-finish his senior year at Garfield HS in order to make up a missing core Math class. The error was found just as he was entering UW, so last year was his first after playing in high school in 2000-01.

Despite the loss of Jeffrey Day to academics, the Huskies are solid at the four spot with returning red-shirt sophomore Mike Jensen and JC-transfer Hakeem Rollins.

Jensen has fought through a ton of obstacles in order to play college basketball. He committed to Bob Bender's staff after his junior year in high school (2000), but was kicked off his team due to an "underage infraction" that forced him to miss his entire senior season. The Huskies worked through the problem with him, honoring his scholarship, and prior to the 2001-02 campaign Jensen started practicing for his frosh season. Then the injury-bug hit him hard with a bum ankle, a broken foot, and then surgery on his shoulder. After all that, Jensen came back strong last year and started 22 of the Huskies 27 games.

Jensen's starting job will be on the line this year with the addition of Hakeem Rollins from Mesa JC in Arizona. Considered one of the more polished post defenders entering the Pac-10 this year, Rollins is a banger who is incredibly strong. Though Jensen has the experience, Rollins might be the better fit in the starting line-up.

Behind the front three are sophomore Ben Devoe and freshman Hans Gasser. Devoe had some team chemistry problems a year ago, and Gasser is a project frontcourt player who is the Huskies are hoping could develop like Ryan Hollins, the UCLA sophomore who Romar just missed on last year.

"We try to put a skilled, quick team on the floor," Romar said. "That's what we like, those are the things we recruit for so that there is never anyone on the floor who can't pass, catch or shoot. You want guys to be able to do that. If you have that on the offensive end and don't give up anything defensively you have a chance to win some games."

Overall the Huskies will be more competitive in 2003-04. They now have some experience. Their team quickness might be tops in the Pac-10, and they appear to have excellent team chemistry - a big strength of Coach Romar. They still lack proven outside shooting beyond Conroy, so that will be their Achilles heel this season. Tre Simmons might be able to help some in that capacity, but it's a tough assignment to ask either Curtis Allen or Simmons to come off the bench and shoot the three-pointer to loosen up a defense.

The battle all year for the Huskies on offense will be scoring against zone defenses. Along with Coach Romar's goals of making the team a "pass, catch, and shoot" group, there will also have to be an improvement in shot selection and patience in UW wantsd to beat the zones they will certainly see.

Nate Robinson might be the most exciting player in the Pac-10 and Will Conroy solidifies a quality core group, but playing hard and winning basketball games don't always go hand in hand.

I see the Huskies finishing 7th this year, up two slots from last year, based on my belief that they will be about 3 wins better. Depending on the development of each player, this squad could be a Pac-10 title contender by 2005.
