2003 Pac-10 BB preview: #6 ASU

<p>Rob Evans' fifth year in Tempe was a memorable season in Arizona State basketball history. Just as he had guided the University of Mississippi back from the depths of the SEC in his fifth season at Oxford, Evans did the same for the Sun Devils. The turnaround was a step-by-step process with the 57-year old Evans getting the most out of every player in each class he recruited. Supplemented, of course, by being fortunate enough to find a gem in freshman Ikechukwa Somotochukwa Diogu.

Head Coach: Rob Evans (6th Year)

2002-03 Pac-10 record: 11-7 (finished in 4th place) lost in 1st Round of the Pac-10 Tourney
2002-03 Overall record: 20-12 (NCAA Tournament West Region #10th Seed) lost in 2nd Round to Kansas

2002-03 Highlight: The Sun Devils went to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1995 in a breakthrough year for the program. Led by a team with five contributing seniors and a star freshman, not only did the Sun Devils go dancing, but they shined with an 84-71 opening round win over seventh-seed Memphis.

Best Arizona State quote from last year:

"Hands down, it was a must-win. We had a solid week of practice. We had a day off on Monday, so we all came in and shot around, and yesterday we had dinner at the Outback as a team and we all talked about this game. We really want to make the (NCAA) Tournament and this is a big step in the right direction."

- So said freshman Ike Diogu after Arizona State's huge home victory over the Oregon Ducks late in the season. Diogu, who made only 5 of 13 shots from the field in the game still managed 17 points and 14 rebounds, spoke about how important a game it was since both Oregon and Arizona State were locked in a fierce battle for the Pac-10's fourth bid to the Big Dance.

Otherwise known as Ike, the 2002-03 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year assaulted the Pac-10 freshman record books. Diogu became just the third Sun Devil ever named as a Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, and the ninth freshman in Pac-10 history to be named to the Pac-10 first team. He was the only player to rank in the league's top five in both scoring and rebounding, and his 19.0 points per game average was the third best scoring average by a freshman in Pac-10 history. While Diogu put up freshman numbers at ASU that will probably never be broken, perhaps the most impressive aspect of Ike's game is that he was by far the most dominant inside player on the West Coast. He shot 63% in Pac-10 play last year, and went to the free-throw line more than any other player. Though Oregon's Luke Ridnour won the Player of the Year award, Diogu deserved it.

Along with Diogu's breakout season, ASU's six seniors had a lot to do with the Sun Devils first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1995. The seniors (as a group) averaged 47 points and 19 1/2 rebounds per game, led mostly by Ike's frontcourt partner Tommie Smith. Curtis Millage was the top outside threat and his production and tough attitude gave ASU opponents reasons for not collapsing on both Smith and Diogu. Shawn Redhage also added important versatility off the bench, and Donnell Knight finally put together a season that he could feel good about. Collectively, the seniors gave guidance to the younger players in the program, and graduating senior Kyle Dodd remains in Tempe as part of Rob Evans staff for the upcoming season. This was a special group that went out in style by appearing in the NCAA tournament, and by winning their first round match-up over Memphis, 84-71. Considering it was just the third time in 22 years that the Sun Devils had been a part of March Madness, it was an great season.

In the second round of the Tournament, Kansas reminded the ASU program of how far it still has to go. The Jayhawks ran right by the Sun Devils with a fierce inside-out game (Collison & Heinrich), beating the Devils by 32 points, 108-76.

With six players graduating from last year's team and seven new players due to see court time in 2003-04, getting back to the Tournament this is going to be difficult. That's a 13-player turnover that would keep any team off balance for a year.

Rob Evans seems to know that better than anyone else.

"No one is going down in talent in this league. Stanford and Arizona are not coming down. I expect Washington and USC to be anxious to move up with good young players. Nate Robinson (Washington) and Desmon Farmer (USC) are as explosive as they come. UCLA will have a new attitude. Cal has some great returners and recruited very well. Oregon has Luke Jackson and plays very well at home. Oregon State is in the process of upgrading its program, which can be tough in this league, but they have a great young point guard and they play very hard. And Washington State has a first-round draft pick as its leader. All the coaches have competed in big-time leagues. It should be a lot of fun this year."

Even as good as Ike is, he's going to need help. And somewhere out of three frontcourt recruits, one redshirt freshman, and a sophomore who didn't play last year due to academics, Rob Evans is going to have to find that help.

The best bet is sophomore Allen Morill (pronounced More-ell), a fullback of a combo power forward who's nickname is Truck. He'll remind you a lot of Antonio Gates, a former Kent State star just a few years ago who just happens to now be a rookie in the NFL (San Diego Chargers). You can see the Texas football background in Morill in the way he plays on both ends of the court. Even Coach Evans says that had Allen been eligible last year, he would have started.

Morill is now 6'7 and might be the Pac-10's new enforcer in the mold of Stanford's Teyo Johnson. If Morill struggles adjusting academically again, Evans will turn to another Texas native, Chris Low, or even to Kansas product Keith Wooden, both of whom are 6'8 freshman power forwards. Wooden is more polished, but Low has been in the program since June. Low's game is more outside-in at this point, while Wooden likes to be within 12 feet of the rim. In a bit of a surprise, Wooden didn't attend his hometown university in the Big 12 (Kansas) though he was a top-100 national recruit.

Cameroon natives Serge Angounou (pronounced An-gew-new) and Wilfried Fameni also give ASU lane presence, though Angounou is still rehabbing after knee surgery that forced him to redshirt in 2002-03. Fameni has excellent size and will definitely see court time. Angounou will likely compete for a starting spot next year, and Coach Evans is hoping to have him at full strength for the Pac-10 season. He's a multi-talented combo forward cut in the Morill mold. Obviously, ASU has a number of bodies at the forward spot and no team in the league has as many young post players as ASU. Even Diogu is just a sophomore.

Jamal Hill struggled during Arizona State's first 16 games last year, and though many expected Hill to play in front of Donnell Knight, it didn't happen on any regular basis. Not unlike a number of JC transfers to the Pac-10, Hill struggled to make an impact and had lots of trouble with his three point shot until settling down mid-season. Now a senior, Hill seems to have the starting spot locked up. Behind Diogu, Hill is the second leading returning scorer, which just illustrates how new this ASU team is. Hill does have Justin Allen to push him at the three, but Allen's quickness has always been very limited. If Hill struggles, Rob Evans could move Morill to the small forward slot and start one of the four freshmen at the four. Angounou can also play out on the wing once he's healthy.

In the backcourt, returning junior Jason Braxton is the point man. One of the more intriguing players nationally, Braxton combines an ultra-quick handle with unreal leaping abilities for a guard. If Braxton can dribble into the lane, he knows how to use his body and the glass very effectively. However, his J is about as flawed as a straw house. As a consequence, many teams have just played off him with success. The word is that Braxton has worked extremely hard to find an outside shot this summer, so he will be a player to watch. There's no doubt that with a 35-40% three point shot, Braxton would garner NBA attention, but that would be a mega-jump for this junior's jump-shot.

Joining Braxton in the starting backcourt will probably be his former high school teammate Tron Smith, a freshman who is ASU's highest ranked recruit. Smith is a combo guard that will slide over to the point from time to time. Smith will be very difficult for Evans to take out of the game since he's versatile at either the one or two, and doesn't hurt the Sun Devils defensively or offensively.

Sharing time with Smith will be junior transfer Steve Moore. Moore is a Los Angeles-native who played with Tyson Chandler at Dominguez high school before attending Santa Ana CC, and is a prototype 2-guard. Kenny Crandall, a senior who began his Arizona State career in 1998, will back up both Tron Smith and Stevie Moore. Crandall could also steal time at the beginning of the year while some of the newcomers are still adjusting. Behind Braxton will be another ASU redshirt freshman, Kenny Kruger. The son of NBA and former collegiate coach Lon Kruger, Kenny is a three-point specialist that has adequate quickness.

The Sun Devils are and intriguing team due primarily to the upside of their freshman and the downside of their senior departures. No team in the Pac-10 lost more seniors and experience than did Rob Evans, but with the positive attitude he 'installed' in Tempe, everyone is thinking younger and better. That's to be determined. Nevertheless, it's a credit to Coach Evans and his staff in their ability to keep perspectives positive despite the turnover.

"First off, we can't wait to coach this team," Evans emphasizes. "We have young kids who are very talented. We have experienced players who are very unselfish. I think chemistry is going to be a strength this year."

With the national focus squared solely on the shoulders of ASU's preseason All-American candidate Ike Diogu, there's a good reason for the Sun Devils to be positive. Ike is without doubt the best interior player in the Pac-10. And though that's a big bonus to have in college basketball, zone defenses and quick whistles don't allow one player to dominate a game. That's why it'll be important for Jamal Hill and two of the young perimeter players to step up on the offensive end.

Curtis Millage's departure will probably prove to be a major loss to this team because last year he was truly the backbone of the team. My estimate is now that Arizona State will finish as the Pac-10's sixth seed because of their youth, but it wouldn't surprise me to see them finish fourth or fifth if Diogu's coattails get long.

I must add this: it takes something thinner than a single thread to separate the third through sixth teams in the Pac-10 this year.

On a future note, if Ike decides to stay after this year, and if Evans is able to develop the program around him, ASU will be one of the frontrunners for the conference crown a next year. They're just a bit too young this year ...
