Bears Hammer Huskies, 54-7

<p class=txt>On the first play from scrimmage, QB Aaron Rodgers connected with WR Geoff McArthur on a 79-yard pass play for a touchdown. This was just the beginning. Later, RB J.J. Arrington posted two 50 (plus) yard runs, one for a TD, and RB' s Marcus O'Keith and Michael Porter each contributed 40 (plus) yard TD runs. These were the big plays in an offensive explosion that resulted in a school total offense record of 729 yards and a 54-7 demolition of the Huskies.

Not too be outdone, the defense made some big plays as well. CB's James Bethea and Daymeion Hughes each came up with interceptions; LB Wendell Hunter tallied two sacks.

It was a team effort by the Bears as they dismantled UW's (Pac-10) 5th ranked defense, stopped the Huskies (Pac-10) 3rd ranked offense and bottled up the conference's leading punt returner, Charles Fredrick (2 returns for 6 yards and fumble).

On the other side of the field, it was a dreary afternoon for Coach Keith Gilbertson, his first as a head coach in Berkeley since November 11, 1995 when he coached for Cal.

There were numerous other "firsts-in-years" for the Bears. Notably, it was Cal's first win over UW at Memorial Stadium since 1975, and the Bears biggest win v. UW since 1922. The Bears opening touchdown was their fastest in elapsed time since 1994, and it was Cal's biggest winning margin in the conference in 81 years.

The Bears showed some new wrinkles on offense. Throwing deep in a two TE/two RB set (Rodgers to McArthur on the game's first play) has not been seen in years. Flanking FB Chris Manderino out wide right forced UW to move a defender out of the box to match up against him, but that opened up space in the middle; Arrington took advantage of that by running for a big gain.

On defense, the Bears effectively double-covered WR Reggie Williams early, using Hughes and ROV Donnie McCleskey to take him out of the game. Unable to go to Williams and without an effective rushing attack, QB Cody Pickett found himself under constant pressure as the Bears utilized their blitz packages to good effect.

CAL KEY OBSERVATION ---

The Bears made a huge statement on their first play from scrimmage by going deep. As UW Coach Keith Gilbertson said, "It puts you in shock a little bit." Based on the game's outcome, we might suggest the shock was more than a little bit. That play was an early indicator that Cal was using an aggressive game plan. Once the Bears broke the Huskies spirit, they didn't let up; Cal forced the game on the Dawgs right to the end of the game

CAL OFFENSE ---

The Bears struck early and often, scoring on their first six possessions. It was a multi-faceted attack featuring a slashing rushing attack up the middle, using runs where Arrington was able to bounce outside for big gains, and passes to several receivers in multiple formations. The successful implementation of the game plan was due in large measure to an offensive line that did a tremendous job of opening holes for the backs and providing pass protection for Rodgers. OT Mark Wilson, OG Aaron Merz, C Marvin Philip, OG Ryan O' Callaghan and OT Chris Murphy dominated the action in the trenches.

Chris Murphy said, quietly summarizing the OL effort, "We did our job."

While that is an understatement, it is also a fitting valedictory to the senior class that made its final appearance at Memorial Stadium. This group experienced everything from the lows of a ten-loss season under Coach Holmoe to the highs of being part of the Coach Tedford's "Great Renaissance".

Through it all, they can say with heartfelt conviction: "We did our job".

Some wondered if the Bears were taking out their frustration on UW after the unfortunate events in Eugene last weekend. Geoff McArthur was clear about it, "We were all were kind of venting from last week."

Speaking of GMac: in this game he set a new Cal single season record for receiving yardage with 1,259. Geoff, let me say this to you - Cal fans everywhere appreciate your effort.

CAL DEFENSE ---

The Bears generated five sacks, two INTs, four TFL's and, most importantly, gave up only seven points. Those stats eloquently portray the total domination of the Cal defense. The key was Cal's ability to curtail the Husky rushing attack. Coming into the game, UW had averaged 4.1 yards per rush; against the Bears, they managed just 3 yards per attempt.

By shutting down the run, Cal was able to harass Cody Pickett into forcing the ball into coverage. Cal employed a variety of defensive sets, including a 3-2-6 in which the Bears used James Bethea, Harrison Smith and Daymeion Hughes at corner, and Matt Giordano, Ryan Gutierrez and Donnie McCleskey at safety. DL Tom Sverchek was utilized as a DE for the first time this season. It was easily the most complete defensive effort by the Bears this year.

Credit must go to Defensive Coordinator Bob Gregory who has worked tirelessly to improve the unit's performance. After the game, speaking about the defensive backs, Gregory simply said, "they're improving". This low-key comment reflects the quiet confidence that Gregory has in his defense.

CAL SPECIAL TEAMS ---

In the absence of special teams leader Mike McGrath, someone had to step up to make the plays that Mike had frequently and spectacularly supplied. On kickoff returns, it was Harrison Smith and Daymeion Hughes who helped shut down the Washington KO return unit. The Bears allowed 16.4 yards per KOR against the UW average of 18.9.

On punt coverage, tackling improved over the previous week, and James Bethea made a standout play recovering a Charles Fredrick fumble. Tyler Fredrickson continued his excellent punting with a net average of 39.0 on three punts. (To put that in context, only three Pac10 teams are exceeding that average on the season). The only questionable play on special teams was the decision to go for two after the Bears second touchdown. It was 19-0 at the time and the more prudent play would have been to kick a PAT.

WASINGTON KEY OBSERVATION ---

The Dawgs were slow, listless, they tackled poorly, and their OL reminded this observer of the 2002 Baylor OL - large, ponderous, salt-box shaped linemen. They quickly lost interest in the game. That might not come as too much of a surprise to veteran Gilby-watchers. Quite simply, he is not a head coach. He is an able assistant who was thrust into a position that calls for leadership that he cannot supply. We will watch how UW's athletic administration addresses this situation; this is a proud program with a glorious history, they deserve better.

The one bright light for the UW team Saturday was WR Charles Fredrick. He made the finest catch witnessed at Memorial Stadium this season when he caught a Pickett pass with one hand while simultaneously being nailed by a Bear defender. It was an incredible reception.

NEXT WEEK ---

The Big Game. Need we say more?

Those three words sum up a century of history, heroics and heartache.

The impact of the Big Game on the lives of its participants can be huge. Bear and Cardinal fans alike can cite chapter and verse of a long-ago contest, and to this day debate the outcome.

One small way we get a glimpse into the Big Game's importance is when we read the obituary of a person who succeeded in some a non-athletic walk of life, and happen across a comment like this: "... he was a hero in the Big Game in 19xx."

Regardless of the diminished role that college football plays in the Bay Area sporting scene today, the Big Game is still the greatest single sporting event of the year. Those who are fortunate enough to participate in the game will gain lifelong memories of their place in a tradition that dates back to 1892.

WEEKLY RANT ---

Cal "fans" who live in the Bay Area who do not attend games in person. I find it difficult to understand how a person can consider himself a serious Cal fan if he doesn't attend the home games at Memorial.

Cal has an exciting team, demonstrably on the rise. They deserve your support. Be there at the Big Game.
