Cal Football 2003: Passing Out the Grades

Prior to the season, the 71Bear Fearless Forecast stated, "Coach Tedford has the Bears on the right track. However, it may take some time for him to reach his objectives. Consolidating the gains of a year ago is what the Bears can expect this season."

Let's grade out the results.

Based on 2003 results, I think we can all agree that the Bears have successfully established a solid foundation that they can build upon for the future.

Now it is time to give the Bears final grades for the season. These marks reflect both positives and some areas requiring improvement.

QUARTERBACK (Grade: A-) Aaron Rodgers and Reggie Robertson combined to lead the Bears to a second place conference ranking in Passing Efficiency. This is a major accomplishment considering that coming into the season Rodgers had never taken a snap at the D1A level and Robertson had only limited experience at the position.

Aaron Rodgers demonstrated a coolness belying his age. Despite starting just nine games, he became the fifth Cal quarterback (after Bartkowski, Gilbert, Taylor and Barnes) to throw for over 300 yards in a game more than three times in a season. He established a new Cal record for lowest interception percentage in a season (1.59%). Finally, he joined Dave Barr, Pat Barnes and Mike Pawlawski as the only Cal QBs to exceed a passing efficiency mark of 140.0 in a season.

Rodgers played what was perhaps his finest game against UCLA, even though that game was a loss. Constantly under pressure, he never lost his composure as he rallied the Bears to a game-tying touchdown and two-point conversion with just 11 seconds left in regulation play. This was the game that established his credentials as a team leader, a fact that was confirmed at the end of the season when he was elected co-captain of the offense by his teammates.

Reggie Robertson was effective early in the season and played his best v. USC. He was 9-12 with one TD and no interceptions when played in relief of Rodgers. Coach Tedford succinctly summarized Robertson's value to the team after the USC game when he remarked, "We have tremendous confidence in Reggie".

RUNNING BACK (Grade: A-)
Cal finished the season ranked first in rushing yardage/game and rushing yardage/attempt (excl. sacks) in the Pac-10, due to a solid corps of running backs and a fine offensive line. First Team All-Pac-10 selection Adimchinobe Echemandu led Cal with 1,161 yards, the third best single season performance by a Bear, behind Chuck Muncie and Russell White, two rather important names in Cal football history.

Supporting "Ech" were the tandem of J.J. Arrington (570 yards) and Marcus O'Keith (270 yards). The highlight of their season came on November 15, 2003 against Washington when "Ech" was sidelined with an injury. Arrington and O'Keith combined for 288 rushing yards and led the Bears to a 54-7 victory over the Huskies.

From the fullback position, Chris Manderino provided essential lead blocking enabling the running backs to break the line of scrimmage. He had twenty "touches" during the season, equally distributed between pass receptions and rushing attempts.

WIDE RECEIVER (Grade: B+) Second Team All-Pac-10 selection Geoff MacArthur had a breakthrough season, highlighted by a record-setting performance in the Big Game. Against the Cardinal, he caught 16 passes for 245 yards (establishing new marks in both categories) and 2 TD's. He also led the Pac-10 in receiving yardage/game (115.7) and was third in All-Purpose yardage. Burl Toler, a solid second receiver, was involved in the single most exciting play in the Bears' season. On October 18, 2003 against the Bruins, Toler hauled in a 35 yard touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers to put the Bears in position to force overtime.

Vincent Strang, David Gray and Chase Lyman also saw duty at the WR position. Strang made the most of his opportunities by scoring five TD's on just 17 receptions. Mention should also be made of the contributions of Jonathan Makonnen. Despite playing in only three games before a foot injury ended his season, Makonnen made his presence felt, particularly against USC, where he had seven catches for 107 yards, including a 20 yard reception in the second overtime.

TIGHT END (Grade: B-) Brandon Hall and Garrett Cross were the mainstays at the tight end position until Cross suffered a broken leg in practice during the week leading up to the UW game. Hall was used principally as a blocker, averaging less than one reception/game, and did a fine job at that. Cross battled through some dropped-pass problems early in the season to become a solid receiver in the two games prior to his injury (5 receptions for 88 yards and a TD). In Cross' absence, John Rust caught three passes in the final two games.

OFFENSIVE LINE (Grade: A) The Pac-10 statistical results, #1 in rushing yardage/game, #1 in rushing yardage/attempt and #3 in fewest sacks permitted/game, confirm what most Bear enthusiasts believed heading into the season: the Cal OL was a much-underrated unit. Led by First Team All-Pac-10 Tackle Mark Wilson, who established a new Cal "iron man" record with 47 consecutive starts, the Bear offensive line did an excellent job protecting the quarterback as well as opening holes for the RBs.

Ryan O'Callaghan, Marvin Phillip, Nolan Bluntzer, Jonathan Geisel, Aaron Merz and Chris Murphy performed yeoman duty up front. Their season was highlighted by an incredible performance v. USC. Facing three DLers who would eventually be named First Team All-Pac-10, the Bear OLers yielded just two sacks and blocked well enough to enable Adimchinobe Echemandu to become the first RB in two years to rush for over 100 yards in a game against the Trojans.

DEFNSIVE LINE (Grade: C) Cal struggled to find the right front-line combination on the defensive side of the ball. Fine performances v. So Mississippi, Illinois, UCLA and UW (10.5 total sacks and 102.8 rushing yards allowed/game) were offset by less-than-stellar efforts v. Colorado State, Utah and OSU (0 sacks and 207.0 rushing yards allowed/game).

It can be argued that the diminished statistical performance of the DL was partly a consequence of the defensive scheme favored by Coordinator Bob Gregory. Nevertheless, I think it is fair to say that the DL was looking rush throughout the season to generate more of a pass, yet failed to do so.

Even so, from the defensive end position, we must note that Ryan Riddle brought some energy to the unit prior to his injury, and Monte Parson stepped up at the end of the season to similarly wreak some havoc. Inside, Lorenzo Alexander had another solid year but did not, as some expected, achieve breakthrough status this season. Josh Beckham started every game and was a steadying influence inside.

LINEBACKER (Grade: B) Three plays stand out when evaluating the linebacker corps' performance in 2003. During the first overtime against USC, Brian Tremblay forced a fumble that was recovered by Wendell Hunter at the Cal goal line. Sid Slater intercepted a pass that was intended for Alex Smith to set up the Bears third TD against the Cardinal. These were certainly noteworthy plays.

But the lasting image of this year's LB unit will be Wendell Hunter rushing up the middle to sack Illinois QB Jon Beutjer to ensure a Bear victory against the Illini.

Joe Maningo and Francis Blay-Miezah also warrant notice, Maningo for his high-energy approach to the game and Blay-Miezah for his solid, consistent play. The LBs were an opportunistic group that took advantage of most of the chances they received.

DEFENSIVE BACKS (Grade B-) A much-improved second half of the season brought up the final grade. The season started rather inauspiciously with the pass defense giving up 260.0 passing yards/game in the first five games, including four 50-yard+ TD' s. Then beginning with Game 6, the pass defense tightened and allowed only 227.3 passing yards/game for the rest of the season, permitting no pass completions greater than 40 yards.

Not coincidentally, the performance of the secondary picked up significantly with the insertion of Daymeion (Donte) Hughes into the starting lineup against USC in Game 6. Hughes played head-up against some of the best receivers in the conference (including Mike and Reggie Williams) and acquitted himself admirably.

Other standouts at cornerback included freshman Tim Mixon who played brilliantly until injuring a knee in the 4th game of the season. In three-plus games, he tallied six pass break-ups, a sack and a fumble recovery. Add to this the work of James Bethea who came back from an uneven season's beginning to start six of the last seven games.

At safety, First Team All-Pac-10 choice Donnie McCleskey had a record-breaking season establishing new single season standards for Cal DB's by tallying 99 tackles and 5.5 sacks. In addition, he defended 13 passes, good for second on Cal's all-time single season list. To this observer, he was as good a safety as any in the Pac-10 this season.

Not only did McCleskey demonstrate superior ability on the field; he was also a leader off the field. As Coach Tedford said at this season's football banquet while introducing McCleskey as the team's Defensive MVP, "He told me before the Washington game that there was no damn way we were spending Christmas at home this year."

At the Free Safety position, Ryan Gutierrez played impressively after recovering from an early season injury. He ranked third on the team in total tackles, highlighted by two thirteen-tackle efforts (v. Oregon State and Arizona).

SPECIAL TEAMS (Grade C-) Inconsistent is the way we must describe Cal's Special Teams play. For example, Cal slipped from first in the conference in 2002 in kickoff coverage to sixth in 2003. On the other hand, the Bears ranked 1st in 2003 in punt coverage after finishing 8th in 2002.

There was an equally dramatic change in fortunes regarding the kickoff return unit; in 2003, the Bears ranked 7th after finishing 1st in 2002. As for punt returns, there was a negligible difference in the rankings: Cal was 3rd in 2003 after winding up 4th in 2002. Of course, most of the focus was on the field goal unit where Tyler Fredrickson converted only 14 of 29 FG attempts, including five misses from inside the 40. In keeping with the "inconsistent" label, Fredrickson also converted two 50-yard+ FG's and the game winner v. USC in the third overtime.

In addition to place kicking duties, Fredrickson was responsible for punting starting with Game 2. His overall improvement in this area is reflected in Cal's rise from last in net punting yardage in 2002 to 6th in 2003.

In part, this improvement can be attributed to more consistent snapping. Both Matt Currin and L.P. Ladouceur did a fine job of snapping this season. The quality of their combined effort is reflected in the following statistic: no blocked punts.

COACHING (Grade A-) Overall, Coach Tedford and his staff did an excellent job of preparing the team to play each week. Despite facing a daunting out-of-conference schedule with an inexperienced team, the Bears were competitive in every game. This young team could have experienced a crisis of confidence after consecutive losses to Colorado State (after taking the lead with six and a half minutes left) and Utah (after taking a lead into the 4th quarter). Instead, the coaching staff held the team together and the Bears posted back-to-back wins over Illinois and USC.

Yet again, after a devastating loss at Eugene where the Bears blew a ten point fourth quarter lead, the team did not collapse. Quite the opposite, they demonstrated a steely resolve in trouncing UW and coming from behind against Stanford. The ability of the coaching staff to keep the team emotionally stable through the ups and downs of a thirteen game season gives ample testimony to their coaching and mentoring abilities.

In the only contest in which Cal was outclassed (v. Oregon State), Coach Tedford took full responsibility in his post game remarks for not preparing the team adequately, "I don't think I gave the offense the right answers to help them shake free. So that's my fault..."

There are only a few coaches in the country who are willing to look hard into the mirror following a game like the Bears experienced against the Beavers. Most coaches head down the same road trod by Gilby after Cal crushed the Huskies, "We got beat every way imaginable. We refused to get off a block. We refused to tackle. It was an awful performance ... I told them (the team) I was damn embarrassed and that I'm a little tired of it." The words of a loser.

The job Coaches Tedford and Cortez did in working with Aaron Rodgers was terrific, and Coach Gregory did an exemplary job preparing the defense each week. The overall improvement of the defense from early in the season to the end of the year was quite remarkable.

OVERALL (Grade A-) The season cannot be categorized as anything other than "successful". The objective of participating in a bowl was realized. The Bears defeated a Top Three team for the first time since 1951. Cal retained the Axe, and the Bears built a foundation that will make them a force to be reckoned with in 2004.

One key area that will have to be addressed is "finishing games". As noted earlier, Cal lost three games that they led in the fourth quarter, and permitted Illinois and USC to make games uncomfortably close with late rallies. The ability to close out teams will be a big step on Cal's road to glory.

I'll close with a comment made by a player I spoke with at the football banquet. To paraphrase:

"We didn't know how good we were until the Washington game. We are ready for our bowl game and the 2004 season. I don't see us losing any games next season."
