The Spin

In college basketball circles, communication is a valuable commodity. It might be the most underestimated aspect in the entire sport. Everybody who is anybody around college hoops wants to know the who, what, when, where, and why's about the game.

Players who are current D-I stars want to know how they might stack up at the NBA level. Incoming college freshmen want to get a sense of how much playing time they’ll get at their new schools. The top-rated prep players in the country would like more information so that they know more about what a potential program is like, and players that are trying to rise up the prep charts want to know what they need to work on to get better.

College coaches want more information as well, but they can't have it without increased means of communication. Every single avenue of contact between coaches and potential recruits is limited by the NCAA, as is practice time with players already at a university.

The word "limited" is probably too kind a word in regards to coaches; handcuffed is more like it. While coaches continue to play the give-and-take game with the NCAA - as was the case with the 5/8 rule being lifted in exchange for NCAA graduation rate enforcement - communication is always at the heart of the matter.

The surprising recent proposal by NCAA coaches for a 5th year of eligibility for college basketball student-athletes was proposed as a means to make graduation rates more accurate since it does take the average graduating college student 4.8 years to finish. It's not a bad idea. In exchange, the coaches basically just want more phone calls. They are even willing to eliminate official visits for high school juniors – just to get on the horn a bit more. During times when they are allowed to contact recruits, coaches are allowed just one phone call a week.

That tells you a lot about the communication gap coaches feel. They just don’t get a chance to learn about the young men they are indeed recruiting. After visiting Las Vegas again this past week during the Nike ‘Main Event’, Reebok ‘Big-Time’, and Adidas ‘Super 64’ AAU summer tournaments, the communication gap is only growing more distant.

While other national camps garner national news, Las Vegas reigns as king of the summer hoops tournaments. Three major shoe company sponsored tournaments occur at the same time in the same city, and that’s not something you can say about the other prominent camps that take place throughout the off-season. In fact, the July evaluation period begins with the Nike All-American in Indianapolis, Indiana. At the same time, the Adidas Superstar All-American in Suwannee, Georgia and the Reebok ABCD Camp in Teaneck, New Jersey kicks are taking place. While those camps are reserved for mostly elite national players, the cities are so far apart that you’d need a private jet to work the right schedule.

So if you want to go to one spot and catch most of the top prep players in the country then Vegas is the place. Nearly every college coach in the country was in Las Vegas this past weekend. Since each tournament is somewhere in southern Nevada, Sin City is a prep battlefield for the so-called ‘Shoe Wars’. Nike, Reebok, and Adidas battle it out for the best players, best teams, and of course, the most exciting tourney format. Nike lost the format battle in my book this year since the overall winner – Friends of Hoop (Seattle, WA) with stars Jon Brockman and Martell Webster – played five games on Sunday, making it the ‘Main Event of Attrition’.

While the NCAA has been trying to reduce the impact of the sneaker business on prep tourneys, the Las Vegas tourney scene is booming. And just like everything else in Las Vegas, it’s only going to get bigger. While Reebok is somewhat of a new entry on the scene they have the biggest chip on the table in Sonny Vaccaro, a Godfather-type of shoe and prep tournaments. Vaccaro established the Nike and Adidas tournaments before moving on to Reebok a year ago. The Big-Time event was very successful this year. However, Adidas probably won the overall battle this year with an incredible group of players out in Shadow Ridge High School.

With more than 500 teams converging on Sin City between the three tournaments, you can only imagine how spread out and confusing the Las Vegas tournament schedules have become. Las Vegas has more construction going on then any city I know of on a daily basis and the tournaments each stretch to the very outskirts of that construction. Some fans who haven’t visited the event might have the concept that you go to a gym, you watch a game, and everything just fits into that nice little vacation package.

Dream on. You’re the pinball and southern Nevada is the machine.

I visited more than 15 gyms in three days and I am sure just about everybody else topped that. Do you get lost? With most of the roads being brand new, ‘Mapquest’ might as well be ‘Safariquest’. There’s a list of about 20 players I wanted to see and I missed 5 of them due to time constraints. The distance between the sites is just staggering and every year you come to the realization you just can’t cover it all. If these tournaments were underwater not even Aquaman could get where he needed to go.

Part of the separation between events is because each shoe company wants their tournament in a particular side of Las Vegas; have their own huddling area if you will. But with the travel and the triple digit heat, it can be a bear to scoot around. Since I enjoy driving, the trip is always a lot of fun for me. I like Vegas. But it’s not easy to follow, let alone grab your steering wheel after your car has been in that heat.

Just to paint the picture, when a writer, scout, or coach wants to watch player ‘A’ in Henderson, Player ‘B’ in northeast Las Vegas, and Player ‘C’ over in downtown, you’re bound to run smack dab into a lot of problems. The usual problem is that the games start at the same time. Another issue is that it’ll likely take an hour-plus to maneuver through Vegas traffic. Right away, it's clear that time's going to be a concern. While the first two days are fairly mapped out with regards to each team and their location, when the tournaments begin their elimination rounds, it’s tough to know what’s about to happen unless you were at the event. How can you be at 20 different gyms which are separated from 10 minutes each to 75 minutes at its greatest distance?

You can’t. For those of you thinking this sounds fairly insane, believe it. Every night, you just have to call around, get online, and map out your plan of attack for the next day. And even after you do that, you realize that it’s not going to work out how you want it to. As the tournament scene has grown in Las Vegas, things have become more and more confusing.

With coaches' seats reserved for one side of each gym, families and players on the other side, you are viewing 21st century segregation too. Wristbands, sign-in, everything you can imagine is isolated between both sides. There’s a big sign that reminds everyone that it’s a ‘No-Contact’ period right when you walk through the door. There’s even two different doors you walk in and two sets of restrooms.

I did see just one snack bar though so that’s something the NCAA might want to take a look at. I’d hate to see a hello passed via a Snickers bar.

Obviously there’s a big reason for the gap. The need for separation between college coaches and potential recruits has been well documented – the main objective is to keep the playing field level. But it’s no more evident then in these Las Vegas gyms to see that scouts, writers, and potential agents have more access than anyone. When two dozen college coaches say to me that a scout or writer can learn more about the players then they’ll ever know during the recruiting process that should tell you something.

There’s simply not as much communication beforehand between coaches and recruits as most of us imagine.

From a writer’s standpoint, the driving and confusing schedules are what you have to deal with to get the stories you want. However, a journalist can interact with both sides and can develop a picture for a story he’s working on. Communication is ours. There’s a sense of accomplishment when you drive or fly off.

While I understand the need for isolation between the recruits and coaches during these evaluation periods, there’s no doubt in my mind that life is just too short to not even be allowed to say hello. I won’t offer up a solution but that’s just my take. I appreciate all the parents, coaches, writers, fans, and players I did speak with and who took some time out of their schedules to make me feel welcome. Thank you very much.

In other news surrounding the Las Vegas tournaments;

 • Perhaps the best stop in Las Vegas during the camps was the headquarters of the Adidas Super 64 Camp, Shadow Ridge HS. Like a lot of the Vegas area high schools, Shadow Ridge is gorgeous but is so far to the north of Las Vegas there are some folks that probably still haven't found their way there yet. "You’d need two camels, a fresh horse, and a bike to get out here," said one Pac-10 Coach. "That’s after you’ve ran out of gas in your rental car." It’s true. It’d be easier to travel to Utah, bring your skis and just take the nearby mountain down and in. I was thankful one coach told me not to give up on my way out there. I was about to when I saw the sign for Salt Lake.

Despite the trek Shadow Ridge was still the place to be. Bob Knight, Lute Olson, Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Calhoun, Gary Williams, Ben Braun, Ben Howland, Trent Johnson, Bill Self and Jim Boeheim were just a few of the big names in attendance on different dates. While every coach had their own various schedule to follow a number of West Coast coaches were on hand to watch Fresno’s EA Sports/EBO team featuring 6’10 twins Brook and Robin Lopez and 6’4 combo guard Derrick Jasper. Mike Krzyzewski, along with assistant Chris Collins watched Duke verbal Greg Paulus at the ‘Ridge. At the same game, Jim Boeheim watched Syracuse’s own Andray Blatche – who you can forget about ever playing a day of college basketball. Numerous top players in just about every class played at Shadow Ridge this weekend.

 • You could sift out about 20 players throughout the camp with regards to who was the best overall player. However, no player was more talked about then Jaber Rouzbahani, a strong 7’5", 260-pound big man from Iran. Rouzbahani, who plays for Lou Ritchie’s Slam & Jam Oakland Soldiers I is a project from the standpoint that he’s just learning basic things, even speaking English. At his side, Rouzbahani travels with interpreter Hashim Alauddeen, a member of NBA agent Aaron Goodwin’s staff, and now lives in the Bay Area trying to work on his aspiring hoop career.

While the Soldiers feature top NorCal point guards Drew Shiller and Michael Porter and wing Larry Gurganious (plus a host of others including 2007 class Bay Area star Wendell McKines), it’d be tough not to say that Rouzbahani didn’t steal the spotlight. He can grab the rim standing flatfooted. After walking behind the Soldiers a few times, hearing other players and fans sitting in the stands constantly ask how tall ‘that’ guy was, I decided to see if the number 75 was used since it might make it easier to answer that question. However, Jaber’s favorite number is apparently 72 so there’s nothing doing there. Rouzbahani also has a big toothy smile and despite limited English skills, played a few practical jokes on his new teammates. He’s a great story and a nice kid that likely will go to a junior college next year since he’s already 18 years old. Though he applied for the NBA Draft this past season, Rouzbahani was not selected. He might be next year though – he’s getting better.
