The Team:

Expected to be a contenders for the 2005 West Coast Conference title, St. Mary's has one of their best squads in years. Head Coach Randy Bennett welcomes the return of the Gaels top four scorers plus a solid defensive senior wing. The starting five includes four seniors and a junior.

The 2004-05 Gaels added a top notch scoring guard from the junior college ranks plus a quality wing transfer from the Pac-10. Even the bench includes two developing seven-footers. While the program looks strong and is clearly a WCC contender, St. Mary's has suffered a few early season setbacks.

Former Castlemont (Oakland) High School star Paul Marigney, the Gaels top returning shooter from a year ago, will have to sit out the fall semester due to academic trouble. Though Marigney only started 11 games last year for St. Mary's, he averaged nearly 27 minutes per game and led the Gaels in scoring (16.0 ppg). He shot 86% from the free throw line and brings a high degree of athleticism to the team. Marigney can score from anywhere on the floor. He went for 40 points and 30 points against Pepperdine and Portland respectively last season, both in league play.

The Gaels top rebounding presence - a top post scoring option - will also be missing from action. Frederic Adjiwanou has to sit out St. Mary's first four games of the 2004 season due to an eligibility ruling based on his transfer from Foothill College two years ago. The 6'8 230 native of France led the Gaels in rebounding last year (6.8 rpg) and finished second on the boards in 2002-03 (4.8 rpg).

In two full seasons, Adjiwanou averaged 9.2 points per game and has been the glue of the team. While his points and glasswork will be missed, the loss of his defensive ability could be more important. Adjiwanou is especially good at getting to the charity stripe as well, garnering 341 attempts in his two year career. He has nearly the same number of career free throw (341) attempts as field goals (351). Frederic was very impressive the last time he faced a Pac-10 team when he went for 17 points and 11 rebounds in an 84-78 loss at Arizona eleven months ago.

St. Mary's will miss both Marigney and Adjiwanou as this early season eligibility crisis will test the team's depth and chemistry. The losses mean two reserves will move into the frontline rotation: Jason Walberg, a Fresno area prep and junior college scoring star, will move into the slot vacated by Marigney.

Walberg is a long range bomber even if he didn't show off his shooting prowess against Belmont. At Fresno City College, Walberg averaged an amazing 668 three-point attempts in two seasons. In an aggressively up-tempo offense (a Paul Westhead type offense), Walberg made 306 of those 668 attempts (45.8%) to become one of the top shooters in California junior college history. In fact Walberg made more three pointers in the past two seasons than have a number of Division 1 teams.

Jason is the consummate coach's son as well. His father Vance has been his head coach the past 6 years; 4 at Clovis West High School in Fresno plus two seasons at Fresno City College. Walberg still struggles with his dribble and only moves around the perimeter so he will not help the team much as a rebounder. If he goes inside the arc he usually passes right back out. Jason struggled to find his shot during his D-1 game going 1 for 9 (0 for 6 from three). He should shoot better against Cal.

Playing for Adjiwanou during the first four games will be sophomore Blake Sholberg. He's a wide 7-footer who's come a long way in his young career but must still be labeled as a developing big man. Reda Rhalimi, another 7-footer who saw just one minute of action against Belmont, will play behind Sholberg. Rhalimi is even bigger then Sholberg but the Morocco native isn't fluid in any part of his game just yet.

Despite the newcomers in the starting line-up, the Gaels have some experienced firepower. Starting with point man E.J Rowland, a Salinas native who arrived at St. Mary's last year after a season at Hartnell Junior College and another at Cal-State Dominguez Hills, Rowland has rounded into a physical guard with good team-oriented skills. Rowland is a steady distributor who can score, defend, and rebound the basketball. He ranked 4th in the WCC in assists and 5th in steals during his inaugural season and actually led the Gaels in minutes per game (32.1 mpg). Rowland was outplayed last night by Belmont point guard Brian Collins and despite looking a bit sluggish, made a adjustments in the second half to improve his defense. Backing up Rowland is enthusiastic freshman guard Todd Golden, an Arizona native who prepped at Sunnyslope High School in Phoenix. Playing in his first game last night against Belmont, Golden got his college career going with a three and ended up playing 29 minutes.

On the wing, senior Jonathon Sanders returns. The transfer from Colorado State two years ago is a nifty forward who appears to be much stronger this year. Sanders will not score a lot when St. Mary's has their complete line-up on the court but he'll pitch in early while the team is short-handed. Sanders got 17 points against Belmont – he possesses a spin move to the basket which is pretty smooth and prefers to shoot in the lane though he will take a three pointer once or twice in a contest. Unlike Rowland, Sanders is a top-notch free throw shooter (81%). Defensively, Sanders can play a number of positions and will even bring the ball up the court.

Helping out Sanders on the wing is sophomore Brett Collins, a physical small forward who plays hard and will start in Adjiwanou's spot. Collins is a three-point threat who still needs an all around offensive game. Both Sanders and Collins will have some company on the wing once former Cal shooting forward Erik Bond is eligible.

St. Mary's top scoring presence is Daniel Kickert, a 6'10 240 lbs Australian who can score on the block with a nice jump hook – and who can also knock down the three. Cal fans might see Kickert as an Amit Tamir with longer arms and similar foot speed. After averaging in double figures his first two seasons, Kickert is a proven commodity. He's the type of player mid-major programs are built around. A 2004 WCC all-first team selection, Kickert has started all 61 games in his two year St. Mary's career. He has shot over 50% from the floor, 40% from three, and 75% from the free throw line in his short college tenure. He struggles to rebound since he's not springy and can be beaten by quicker players. Nonetheless, just like Tamir, Kickert can be a very effective player when his shot is working. He's a steady big man. He grabbed 13 boards and scored 16 points last night against Belmont.

The Gaels play man-to-man defense almost 90% of the time, though they might switch up and zone the Bears a bit. Coach Bennett wants his team to play basketball at a moderate pace while focusing on playing the game hard on both ends. Right now, his Gaels are just 7 deep and they were challenged by a height-challenged Belmont team last night, pulling out a win at 67-58.

The Team:

Like St. Mary's, Cal is coming off an opening night win against a team that they were favored to beat. Against Cal, UC-Riverside just couldn't get in sync though they played better as redshirt freshman Larry Cunningham started to find the range. Cal played solid defense in the 1st half – holding UCR to 17 points – one of the best defensive scoring totals in recent Cal history. When the score opened up some though, the defense did too. Nonetheless, Cal showed off a balanced scoring line-up and quality passing around the perimeter. Each Cal starter chipped in at least 8 points but no more than 9 points. The Bears only had three turnovers at the half and got a number of open looks.

The Bears forced the Highlanders top player, Vili Morton, away from the hoop most of the night and David Paris and Dominic McGuire combined to frustrate the UC-Riverside big man. Paris & McGuire totaled 15 rebounds and freshman DeVon Hardin had a nice debut. Against St. Mary's, the Bears won't have to defend a Vili Morton type interior player. Daniel Kickert and Blake Sholberg form a nice duo but they aren't as polished as UCR's Morton. The Gaels present a frontcourt with good size and a quality shooter in Daniel Kickert, a player who can be a tough match-up if you don't get him out of his rhythm. Look for the Bears to bump him a lot and limit his open looks. Cal should be able to out rebound the Gaels since they have a lot of options on the glass and feature players who can elevate better.

On the wing, Marquise Kately was a bit sluggish Thursday night. He had some quality looks off curls but didn't seem to find his rhythm. UCR junior Steve Williams played him effectively and managed to keep his attempts down. Against St. Mary's, Kately will face an intriguing battle with senior Jonathon Sanders as both players can defend and switch out to the perimeter. The guy who wins that battle will go a long way in determining the game winner - but expect Kately to take a big step forward.

Cal will sub in freshman Eric Vierneisel. The Chicago-native had a solid debut in last night's game, going 4 for 4 from long range with his parents in the audience. Vierneisel showed why the Bears recruited him so hard last summer. He'll likely match up with St. Mary's sophomore Brett Collins.

Ayinde Ubaka and Richard Midgley did the job defensively against UCR, holding the Highlanders guards (the starters) to just 2 points combined. They'll look to slow down St. Mary's starting combo of Rowland and Walberg, both of whom struggled during their first game against Belmont. The Bears were able to get their starters some rest last night, so look for Ubaka and Midgley to have the fresher legs. Midgley, who did not shoot a three, will put up several in this contest.

This game has been circled on the calendar – by both programs – for a long time. The Gaels know that the Bears had an up and down season a year ago, while Cal knows that the Gaels do not have their full arsenal of talent available. Both teams definitely want to go to New York City and play twice on national television at Madison Square Garden. That alone is a ton of incentive.

It's either win and move on to the next level, or face 10 long days of practice in Northern California while dreaming of New York.
