They're one step closer to the Rose Bowl.

While #4-ranked California (9-1, 7-1 in Pac-10) routed Stanford (4-7, 2-6) 41-6 in a record-setting Senior Day performance, it was easy to overlook to another outstanding game by J.J. Arrington (27 carries for 169 yards), a devastating pass rush that sacked Cardinal quarterback T.C. Ostrander six times (two each for Tom Sverchek and Ryan Riddle, one each for Lorenzo Alexander and Joe Maningo), yet another scintillating touchdown run by freshman Marshawn Lynch, and a sloppiness that resulted in 228 yards in total penalty yardage, in favor of the fact that as this improbable 2004 football season is appoaching its close, the California Golden Bears is ever so close to setting aside years of near and not-so-near misses of playing in Pasadena on New Year's Day.

Three years ago, the idea of the Golden Bears even contemplating Pasadena was risible. Cal had lost the Big Game 35-28 to go 0-10 and needed a win at Rutgers to prevent a winless season.  And while the story of how head coach Jeff Tedford worked to change the culture of California football is well documented, the players who continue to live through that change have a story that continues to evolve.

"After being here for that 1-10 season, it's sweet to be where we are," said wide receiver Geoff McArthur, who with five catches, now owns the school career receiving record with 196 catches. "It gives me goose bumps to look at the polls and see us ranked so high. You look at all the teams that have been up there the past few years like Miami and Ohio State and to see Cal up there is the best feeling."

Even Tedford, who's reluctant to look pass the next game, allowed himself to think about what the Rose Bowl might mean.

"The Rose Bowl would mean a lot to the program, the players, and the coaches," said Tedford. "During the last three years, I've seen how hungry our alumni are for that and we'll work our hardest for that."

With Auburn and Oklahoma both winning on Saturday and Texas not playing, Cal will likely remain 4th when the new BCS ratings come out on Monday. As the likelihood of any two of the BCS's top three teams losing any of their remaining games decreases, the Bears' task list comes to this: beat Southern Mississippi on December 4th and they will go to the Rose Bowl.

"During the March to Victory, my eyes were getting a little watery," said defensive tackle Lorenzo Alexander. "It's been a great experience here and we've got just two (regular-season) games this year. This season's been a dream and it's been great to see this team work hard and improve. I never thought I'd be this close to playing in a Rose Bowl."

Although the final score would reflect otherwise, the first half was hard-fought as the Cardinal did a good job of stuffing the Cal's running game. The Bears ran for just 79 yards in the first half - with 33 of them coming on the next to last play in the first half.

"They were doing some things that we hadn't expected," said Cal head coach Jeff Tedford. "Their front line was able to put good presure on us and our offensive line wasn't able to get any movement early. Eventually we were able to find a formation that we could get after them with."

The Bears defense had another fine performance, as a Stanford offense already weakened by the absence of injured quarterback Trent Edwards failed to sustain much of an attack. The Cardinal managed its first offensive first down with 1:38 left in the first quarter and only managed five for the entire first half.

California scored its first touchdown on its first play after a 51-yard punt return put the ball on the Stanford 29. Aaron Rodgers found freshman Robert Jordan on a 29-yard post pattern that featured a key adjustment by the receiver and a smart read by the quarterback.

"If they were playing two safeties, I was supposed to run a post, if they played one, I was supposed to run an out," said Jordan, who said he felt no residual effects from a helmet-to-helmet hit later in the game. "They played two, but as I ran my pattern, one of the safeties must have switched over to Geoff."

The Bears took a 10-3 lead into the locker room at halftime.  Cal was unable to gets its running game on track and was reluctant to challenge the Cardinal secondary on downfield passes. Although the Bears had three poor punts (4, 22, and 24 yards), none of them resulted in Stanford scores.

Cal's opening possession of the second half was helped by 35 yards of Stanford penalties - as the Bears marched for another field goal to take a 13-3 lead. Following a Stanford punt and a couple of plays came The Run, courtesy of Lynch, who may be the single biggest reason for Cal fans to add DVRs to their holiday shopping lists.

From the Bear 45, Lynch took a handoff and ran to the right, seeing a defender, he changed direction and ran left, changing the ball from his right hand to his left hand. As he ran upfield a defender ran with him and Lynch gave a slight change of pace/twist of the hips that was just enough to throw the defender off balance to allow Lynch to run past him. Continuing to run forward, Rodgers of all people, came racing downfield to throw a block at the Stanford 30 - that's 25 yards downfield -  that cleared out Oshiomogho Atogwe that gave Lynch a chance to cut back across the field and outrace the Stanford defense for a touchdown that eventually gave Cal the lead and for all intents and purposes sealed the victory.

"The offensive line gave me room, Rodgers threw a good block and I just kept running," Lynch said. When asked about the hesitation move that scrambled his defender, Lynch insisted over and over, with a smile, "I was just running straight."

"Marshawn Lynch is worth the price of admission," said Tedford. "He does it all. It's great to have a 1-2 punch like Arrington and Lynch."

Lynch, who later threw a touchdown pass, continued his remarkable freshman season.   With 122 yards in 9 carries, he now has run for 562 yards in 61 carries for a mindboggling 9.2 yard average.  He also returned two kickoffs for 40 yards and completed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Burl Toler later in the game.

Minutes later, Arrington scored on a nine-yard touchdown in a 87-yard drive including 25- and 14-yard runs from the All-American candidate. The senior had another solid game, with 27 carries for 169 yards - giving him a season total of 1,584, which breaks Chuck Muncie's record of 1,460 set in 1975. Arrington also recorded his 10th consecutive 100-yard game, extending his Cal single season record.

"It took us awhile to get a feel for their defense," Arrington said. "The offensive line did an awesome job. We wanted to break them down with my running and Marshawn's fresh legs and we could tell that they were getting tired.

"It's great to have J.J. and Aaron back there," said center Marvin Philip. "If you ask Aaron who the Heisman winner should be, he'll say J.J., if you ask J.J., he'll say Aaron. It's an honor to have both of those players considered for the Heisman."

During several games this season, the Stanford defense has started out strong only to wither in the second half - most notably against USC and Arizona State as both teams snatched late victories from the Cardinal. Stanford yielded 228 yards rushing in the second half and 333 yards total. This contributed to some uneasiness on the field as Stanford's frustrations manifested themselves into penalties and California was finding themselves challenge to steer clear of the morass.

"It's really uncharacteristic of us," said head coach Jeff Tedford about the Bears' 102 yards of penalties - unusual for a team that's one of the least penalized teams in the conference. "We're going to have to look at it on tape and if we see anything we'll address it."

There were a few plays that were particularly rankling - in the third quarter after receiving a pass from Rodgers, McArthur was clearly out of bounds when a Stanford defender threw him to the ground. In the fourth quarter, during a Stanford punt, a defender ran into Tim Mixon well before the ball arrived drawing another 15-yard penalty and the wrath of most of the 72,981 in attendance.

"That's not football," said linebacker Joe Maningo. "It's cowardly for the guy to do that."

"They were frustrated," said Alexander. "That hit on Tim was just cheap. You don't want to retaliate in that situation, but at that point I'd have loved to run the score up."

Following one fourth quarter play, Stanford nose tackle Babatunde Oshinowo was injured. As he walked off the field, he turned with some heated words for the Cal offensive line. At that point, Tedford called the offense over reminding them to keep their poise.

"I wanted to tell them to not retaliate and to play with class," said Tedford.

"He was being blocked and somebody else was pulled into him. It wasn't a foul" said Philip. "I felt bad that he got hurt, and after the game I apologized to him and he apologized to me."

Another source of Cardinal frustration was the lack of production from its offense. Much of the blame can be pinned on the performance of Stanford's offensive line, which allowed T.C. Ostrander to take extremely hard hits on eight consecutive plays stretching over two possessions. After one play, Ostrander was rolling around the ground in pain, but gathered himself in time for the following play.

"He was hurting out there," said Maningo of Ostrander who was 8-of-26 for 148 yards. "He had to peel himself off the ground after a couple of hits, but you have to give him credit for being tough and staying in there."

California scored two late touchdowns - both to seniors playing their final home games. The first was a 20-yard option pass from Lynch to Burl Toler - who'd been battling a knee injury for the past few weeks.  Toler was mobbed by his teammates following his touchdown.  Closing out the scoring was reserve QB Reggie Robertson, who scored on a five-yard draw play.

"Reggie's been unbelievable," said Rodgers. "He's been here for five years and has been important to my development. From day 1 he's helped me out and given me confidence. He's classy and selfless and I'm proud to call him my friend."

The team now gets a week off before traveling to Hattiesburg, Mississippi to play Southern Mississippi on December 4th, in a game rescheduled from September 16th because of Hurricane Ivan. Barring some extremely unforeseen circumstances, a win there will put the Bears in the Rose Bowl. Yet after the game, many players were reluctant to entertain the thought of the Rose Bowl, insisting that in the short term, they had to think of the Southern Mississippi contest as a bowl game in itself. For the players who've made the long journey from 1-10 to 9-1, there's also some time for a brief and fond look back.

"Coming out of the tunnel, I don't think it hit me until I stepped onto the field," said McArthur. "You're seeing all the guys leaving that you came in with, and we've developed the type of relationship that you can never break and it got me a little teary-eyed. It's a great family to be part of it, and it was sad to know that it's the last time we'll run out of that smoky helmet."
