The Jaguars will be one of the top teams in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in 2004-05 as they put in their second season under Head Coach Michael Grant. Replacing a legend like former Southern coach Ben Jobe hasn't easy for Grant (whose brother Gary played at Michigan and in the NBA.) But with probably the best returning roster in the conference, Coach Grant should find winning easier this season. The Jags, who finished 5th in the SWAC a year ago, have been picked to finish 2nd in the Preseason 2004-05 SWAC media poll behind defending conference champ Alabama A&M. Why the predicted jump from fifth to second?

Expectations are up in Baton Rouge because of the talented senior scoring trio of Deon Saunders, Peter Cipriano, and Jerimie Collier. This group of seniors on an experienced Southern squad appears to be the best trio on any SWAC team this season.

The 2003-04 SWAC Newcomer of the Year and Preseason choice for SWAC Player of the Year is Deon Saunders, a silky smooth wing who posted the most impressive numbers in the SWAC last year. Like Cal's Leon Powe, Saunders led his team in scoring (18.4 ppg) and rebounding (5.8 rpg). He led the SWAC in field goal percentage (58%). Unfortunately, like Powe again, Saunders is out with a knee injury (although much less severe). He could be out until late December though reports differ on the fact that's he's been practicing or not. Either way, he did not make the trip to California and will not play. While Saunders' injury is the most significant to the Southern program, it's just one of many that the team faces. More on that later.

The loss of Saunders for part of the non-conference schedule means the scoring duties fall mainly on Southern big man Peter Cipriano. A New Jersey native in his 3rd year as a Jag, Cipriano is off to an outstanding start in his senior season after posting the best back-to-back performances of his career. After putting up 21 points and 13 rebounds in a comeback win against Kentucky State, Cipriano bounced back the next night with a career high 32 points and 15 rebounds against Stillman College. He's the best offensive weapon the Jaguars have, for now, and he'll be the go-to guy against Cal.

Teaming with Cipriano in the post are juniors Jerrid Campbell, an oft-injured post player who's been trying to regain his health, and Alvin Mott, a newcomer from Georgia Perimeter CC. Campbell had a great start to his career when he averaged nearly a double-double (10 ppg & 8 rpg) in 2002-03 - but has been victimized by the injury bug the past two seasons. Following surgery in April, his foot is still giving him trouble, but has managed 13 minutes per game so far.

Sophomore Joseph Jack, a Lake Charles, LA native, should see another 10 minutes off the bench to spell Cipriano.

In the back court, last year's starting point guard Trayvean Scott is still working his way back from a significant hand injury. The one time Texas A&M recruit from Southern Lab High School in Baton Rouge, Scott instead stayed home to play college basketball and now reigns as the Jaguars most experienced roster player with 80 career games. He's averaged between 5 and 7.6 points per game in each year of his career while grabbing 2.4 rebounds per game, so he's a steady kid. Despite the hand injury and recent surgery, he's played his way onto the floor if not yet into the starting line-up.

That's because junior Chris Alexander, a JC transfer originally from Eisenhower High School in Lawton, OK, is getting the nod. Alexander is supposedly a scoring point, but he's done little of that so far (see stats above). He's giving Coach Grant 22 minutes per game and is an ultra quick guard who possesses outstanding athleticism (he was a long jumper in high school) and brings a defensive mind set to the floor. Alexander had a stellar two-year career at Redlands CC (OK) leading his team to a 67-5 two-year record.

Senior Brandon Wardlow will also see about 20 minutes a game in the team's 4-guard rotation. He's off to a good start this year and comes in as the team's top perimeter threat. Wings Nicholas Egland and Jarvis Vaughn will split time evenly as they did a year ago though now they also have to cover the time that Saunders can't play. Vaughn will start because his season has gone well so far, but neither player is a perimeter option – the two have attempted just 17 three pointers in a total of seven combined seasons. Both players look to score in the lane.

The Jaguars have limitations not expressed by their 2-0 record. A feisty group, Southern was down 5 to Kentucky State with 32.4 seconds left in their last game. Southern made up the points on shooting guard Jerimie Collier's one and only successful three this season, plus a put back by Collier on Trayvean Scott's three-point attempt. In overtime, the reverse happened when Scott cleaned up Collier's errant three for the winner. While Kentucky State (Division II) is a solid D-II team and Stillman College (Division III) fought tough, neither game will count towards Southern's RPI.

The Jags are not close to full strength with their best player (Saunders) out, with Campbell coming back from a foot injury, with wing Nicholas Egland's extensive back problems, and former PG starter Scott coming off surgery to his hand this past September. On top of all that, Wardlow missed a week of practice a few weeks ago with a sore knee. Even their two non-eligible transfers, DeForrest Riley-Smith (Penn State) and Omar Alston (Hofstra) are out with a broken nose and ankle injury, respectively. Coach Grant has had to practice with just nine players most of the season.

At full strength, Southern University would battle for the SWAC's automatic bid. But operating from the trauma ward, we might see the Jags in the NCAA play-in game – if they make even that. Their record will suffer without Saunders.

Eleven days after suffering a home loss to St. Mary's College, Cal is ready to get back on the court.

“Practice, practice, practice,” said Coach Braun commenting on the time off. “We just practiced, and it was very valuable for us.”

The Bears, who scrimmaged against each other the morning after their first loss of the season, put in some hard work during those sessions. It was a productive time for a Cal team that didn't get to practice a lot before the season actually started, though the players would have preferred to play in New York.

But the two games in two days at Haas Pavilion in front of the home fans showed the Cal faithful some of the things the Bears are capable of and some of the areas they have to work on. Cal's post players scored 36 points against UC-Riverside and pushed the ball up-court aggressively. Then the next night those same players managed just 4 points against St. Mary's.

Cal's perimeter shooters (Vierneisel, Ubaka, and Midgley) did well, shooting over 60% from beyond the arc with the international rules in place. The Bears played with confidence the first night, but lost their patience after getting down early to St. Mary's.

“We got down early and we tried to come back in a hurry,” said Coach Braun regarding the loss to St. Mary's. “We played with some frustration – that can happen early in the year. We have to avoid that pitfall. We have to understand that the game is 40 minutes.”

Cal now arrives at Game #3 and a 1st time ever match-up against Southern. Coach Braun and Coach Grant have known each other since days at Michigan hoops; Coach Grant was on staff at Cleveland State a few years ago when Cal visited the Vikings. The Bears last played a SWAC team two seasons ago when Grambling played at Berkeley.

Cal and SU both take most of their shots from inside the arc. The Bears take 88% of their shots inside the three-point line while the Jaguars shoot 78% within that area. Though neither depends heavily on long distance scoring, the Bears may have an advantage here: the Jags have made 6 in 34 attempts (17%) while the Bears are 9 for 14 (64%) through two games.

Though Cal will certainly fall off that pace, look for Cal's starting back court of Midgley and Ubaka, plus reserve Eric Vierneisel to fire up more threes tonight.

Cal shooting at the free throw line (70%) gives indications of a strong improvement over last year. The Jaguars have not been as successful at the line (57%) but have done a great job of getting to the charity stripe with 38.5 attempts per game. SU knows how to draw a foul.

Perhaps the key match-up on of the night will be starters Rod Benson against Peter Cipriano in the post. While both teams will rotate players in, Cipriano's hot start to the season could come to a quick end if Benson does his job and blocks out to keep the Jaguar's big man off the boards. Benson has played in foul trouble early on this season so staying on the court and playing sound defense will be his key. Look for Cal freshman DeVon Hardin to see time against Cipriano in a supporting role.

The Bears will probably run a lot against Southern, so we can expect a high scoring up-tempo game. That will balance scoring throughout the team unless someone is feeling it – and it that's Kately, he'll see a lot minutes tonight.
