An early surprise in the Pac-10 has been the play of the Arizona State Sun Devils. They are a program with a lot to prove. The Sun Devils won just 4 games in the Pac-10 last season while falling to the bottom of the Pac-10 standings and failing to qualify (even) for the Pac-10 Tournament. With a young roster around All-American Center Ike Diogu, it was a tough year for ASU fans to watch - they watched perhaps the best player in Arizona State history in the middle of his career with no supporting cast.

Team support for Diogu has improved this year. ASU’s developing young program is certainly better then they were a year ago – their current RPI stands at #47 in the country. They finished at #184 in 2003-04. Through the first dozen games this season, Rob Evans' club went 11-1, suffering a 1-point loss to UTEP in El Paso around Thanksgiving for their only defeat. They’ve improved on their shooting (43% in field goals and 33% from three in 2003-04 to 48% in field goals and 38% from three) as well as their team defense (76.6 ppg allowed in 2003-04 to 65.3 ppg in 2004-05). The Sun Devils currently rank as the 3rd best shooting team and the 3rd best scoring team in the Pac-10. They block more shots (4.92 bpg), sport the best rebounding margin (8.6), and collect more rebounds (40.2 rpg) then any other team in the league.

While the supporting cast is better, so is ASU’s main weapon, junior Ike Diogu. Diogu has the resume, experience, and skill to go head to head with any big man in the nation. He’s far ahead of any player in the Pac-10 for Player of the Year honors and he is making a case for National Player of the Year as well. The 6’8 bruiser from Garland TX averages a double-double for the season. He leads the Pac-10 in scoring and rebounding and ranks 6th nationally in points per game. Diogu, such a dominant inside force that defenders have to foul him, has scored nearly double the number of free throws as any other Pac-10 player has attempted: Ike currently has 129 free throws made – while Nate Robinson is second with 72 attempted. He’s shooting 85% percent from the line and 62% of the floor. It's been a long time since an inside player dominated the Pac-10 like this player. Right now, Ikechukwa Somotochukwa Diogu is a man amongst boys.

Playing alongside Diogu in the frontcourt is sophomore Serge Angounou. The former New Mexico prep player of the year, Angounou is close to being 100% after battling major knee problems during his initial season in Tempe. This is Serge’s 3rd year at ASU so he’s a veteran despite being in the middle of his sophomore year. He’s making much better decisions with the ball and taking far fewer three pointers – a weakness last year. Angounou is 4th in points and 2nd in rebounds per game, which fits perfectly with what Coach Rob Evans wanted from him. Playing behind both starters is junior Allen Morill, sophomore Wilfried Fameni, and freshman Craig Austin. Morill gets most of the reserve minutes because if his size, experience, and capability in short stretches.

The backcourt is led by seniors Steve Moore and Jason Braxton, two former California prep players who’ve improved a lot of on their games. Known as one of the worst shooters in the Pac-10, Braxton isn’t taking the dare to shoot from defenses as he’s done in previous years. He’s attempted just 8 three’s all season despite opposing guards sagging off him. Braxton is on pace to have more assists, turn the ball over fewer times, and grab more rebounds then in any of his previous seasons. Moore is just a steady off-guard who is nearing the end of his career as well. He averaged 12 points per game in 2003-04 and is up to 13 points per game this year. Across the board, his numbers are nearly identical to his junior campaign. Moore can hit the three and he can score on pull-up jumpers.

Backing up those two seniors are sophomore Kevin Kruger and junior Tyrone Jackson. Kruger is again ASU’s top outside shooter at 46% from three. Since he really lit up the Bears last year at Haas Pavilion in his breakout game, Kruger should play a number of minutes in this contest. Before the game against Cal last year, Kruger had scored just 36 points in 17 games (2.1 points per game). After knocking down four three pointers against Cal, this son of UNLV head coach Lon Kruger averaged 13 points per game the rest of the way including 22 against Arizona. Defenders can guard Kevin closely on the offensive end since he does not possess much experience in scoring while attacking the basket. Only 14 of Kruger’s 76 attempts have come inside the arc. ASU tends to catch a number of teams sleeping when Kruger comes in for Braxton, a guard that defenders lay off to prevent penetration. Defenses have to change the scheme when these two switch in and out.

Jackson is a quality back-up who is the reigning California Junior College Player of the Year. He had a stellar career at Fresno CC playing in one of the highest-tempo offenses in the country. Tyrone can score in a variety of ways but has only one double-digit game this season. That’s surprising since he’s shooting 60% from three on the season.

Starting forward Bryson Krueger has been a pleasant surprise for Coach Evans on the wing. This sophomore from Phoenix played one season at Yavapai Community College for Brooks Thompson – the former NBA guard – who is now himself a Sun Devil coach. Krueger is a solid young athlete who could emerge next year but is playing with a sore ankle now. Playing behind him is former Bay Area prep Tim Pierce from Hercules High. In what should be a fun experience and homecoming for him, expect Pierce to pick up a few extra minutes. Rob Evans did really well one year starting a former NorCal product against the Bears. In fact, that 111-108 OT victory by ASU with 61 points from NorCal product Eddie House happens to be the last time the Sun Devils beat Cal on the road. That game occurred on Jan 8th, 2000 which coincidentally preceeds this contewst by 5 years to the day.

By the numbers, the Sun Devils are strong across the board. They are playing well and their RPI appears in good shape. However, the quality of their non-conference schedule can certainly be questioned. Arizona State only played two non-conference road games (none of them in December) and went 1-1. So while ASU fans are happy with the early success, they are taking a “wait and see” approach as the Pac-10 schedule starts.

Conference play started badly for Ike and the boys with a 18 point pounding in Tucson but they rebounded nicely with a road win over Stanford. Arizona State hasn’t swept the Bay Area swing since the 1984-85 Pac-10 season - twenty years ago. Doing that would be a major accomplishment for Coach Evans. Though nobody will admit that’s the goal, as always saying it's just a game by game approach, if ASU pulls it off that’s all everyone will talk about.

After a tough second half against the sweet shooting Arizona Wildcats in Cal’s Pac-10 home opener this past Thursday night, the Bears return to the court to face a team that’s won 10 of their last 11 games – the red hot Arizona State Sun Devils. The loss to Arizona dropped Cal below 500 in conference play. While every Pac-10 game can swing the fortunes of a program, Saturday’s game against ASU stands out for the Bears. With a win over ASU, Cal will have a 2-2 start to Pac-10 play, even after going up against three of the better teams in the country. Washington, Arizona, and Arizona State all have Top 50 RPI’s and boast a combined record of 37-5 this season.

Despite playing with a number of nagging injuries, Cal junior guard Richard Midgley continues to be the floor general and inspirational spark for the Bears. After suffocating Salim Stoudamire defensively on Thursday and playing solid against both Washington and Washington State, Midgley will look to do the same on ASU’s Moore and Jackson. He could have a great night.

The Bears offense will lean heavily on junior Rod Benson. His play down low in the 2nd half against Arizona was impressive. Rod continues to make tough shots and improve his ability to get clean looks as he spins to the basket. Taking the ball right at Diogu might be the best way for the Bears to gain an edge. Attacking Diogu before he attacks you might be Cal's best game plan. If ASU slots Diogu on Hardin to avoid that, Cal could gain a significant advantage with Benson at the post. Look for Rod to play smarter against the Sun Devils.

Dominic McGuire played a fantastic game against Arizona on Thursday and could be in line for more minutes against the Sun Devils. He knocked down all but one shot (6 of 7 from the floor) to total 12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 block in just 19 minutes. It’s his fellow sophomore wing teammate though, Marquise Kately, who needs to revive his game.

Kately, playing with a wounded non-shooting hand did not score or grab a rebound in 22 minutes against the Wildcats. Despite that performance, Kately welcomes the opportunity to rebound against ASU. He totaled 41 points and 11 rebounds last year as a freshman in two games against the Sun Devils, so he's looking forward to matching up with and defending Pac-10 newcomers Bryson Krueger and Tim Pierce.

For Cal fans, this game will feature two competitive teams and lots of exciting plays. The Bears will look to keep this game as short on fouls and as up-tempo as possible. ASU would love to see the contest become a free throw shooting affair. Controlling the tempo and playing in half court sets would allow Diogu to get involved in everything, so by pushing the tempo Cal might be able to score in transition and limit Diogu’s touches. Ike is going to score and he’s going to rebound – he’s always going to get his. But limiting his touches and getting ASU out of their game will be Cal’s focus.

No matter what the score is, the game will be won by 5 points or less. Any more than that would be very surprising.
