Martin Smith, who started 17 games and led Cal with 113 assists last season, has been rewarded with a scholarship for the 2005-06 campaign, Golden Bear head coach Ben Braun announced today.

Smith, who joined Cal as a walk-on in the fall of 2002 and will be a senior this year, averaged 5.6 points per game, 2.3 rebounds per game and 3.9 assists per game last season. He also ranked seventh in the Pac-10 in assists and fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.95:1).

"I'm pleased to be able to provide Martin with a scholarship," said Braun, who added that the scholarship became available after Dominic McGuire announced his intent to transfer. "His performance, dedication and work ethic have really aided our program. He has shown a strong commitment to the team, and his contributions have been invaluable."

Smith received the team's Coaches' Award following the 2004-05 season, and he won the Hustle & Spirit Award in 2003-04.

Smith is the sixth walk-on to be awarded a scholarship during Braun's nine-year tenure with the Bears, joining former players Robbie Jones, Ryan Forehan-Kelly, Morgan Lingle, A.J. Diggs and Conor Famulener. Top Stories
