Cal women's hoops players impress in S.F.

This past weekend, basketball fans were treated to a glimpse of what the future might hold for the Cal women's basketball program as Bears old and new teamed up to power the East Bay team to the finals of the ProCity playoffs.

First round: East Bay 101, South Bay 91

On Saturday at Kezar, in a playoff game between East Bay and South Bay, it was a battle between one team full of athletes and another with one unstoppable star. In this case, the team made up of mostly Cal Bears outlasted the scoring machine that is former USC standout Rometra Craig, who scored a game high 42 points, including 8 three-pointers.

East Bay’s starting lineup was all Bears, with rising sophomore center Jessica Lawson and rising senior forward Renee Wright joining the freshman trio of Jene Morris, Ashley Walker, and Alexis Gray-Lawson.

But it was Devanei Hampton who came off the bench to steal the show, scoring 36 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

The game started slowly for East Bay. A few overenthusiastic passes resulted in quick turnovers, and East Bay were scoreless for the first few minutes. On the other side, Craig set the tone for the game by jacking up shots from all over the floor, and South Bay had itself an early 7-2 lead.

But that all changed when Hampton replaced Lawson. Hampton ignited the offense by snatching defensive rebounds and quickly throwing outlet passes to one of the guards, or by taking the ball down the court herself and rewarding her speedy teammates with a nifty bounce pass for an easy layup. She also took it upon herself to score by establishing position down low and using her sure hands to catch anything tossed her way, then using her combination of quickness and size to put the ball in the basket. She scored a quick seven points to give East Bay its first lead, one they would keep for much of the first half.

With Hampton and Walker patrolling the middle, the other East Bay players began taking risks defensively, leading to some quick steals and breakaways. On one play, future Stanford Cardinal Jillian Harmon was pulling in the ball, perhaps to attempt an elbow jumper, when Gray-Lawson swooped out of nowhere and ripped the ball from Harmon and raced the other way, only to miss the lay-up. Luckily, Renee Wright was there for the follow. On another play, Walker flew out from the lane to swat an outside shot and started yet another fastbreak; she would impress with her jumping ability and shotblocking all day. The East Bay players’ athleticism was in full flow, and they clearly took pleasure in sharing the ball, even over-passing at times. Nonetheless, they had South Bay on their heels, collecting fouls and free throws along the way. And with Craig firing blanks, East Bay took a double-digit lead in what seemed like no time at all.

Then East Bay coach T.J. Walker (yes, Ashley’s dad) sent in Lawson to replace Walker, and Cal fans in attendance had their preview of a much-anticipated Twin Towers lineup. Lawson took over the low-post, while Hampton showed her versatility by moving out to the high post. She was clearly comfortable out there. With her height, she could pass over most defenders, finding Lawson on a couple of nifty passes. This Hampton-Lawson high-low combination is one Coach Joanne Boyle might want to put in her playbook. Though Lawson had some problems finishing some of her shots, she got fouled often and made her living on the line. In the meantime, Hampton seemed to be able to do whatever she wanted; South Bay had no answer for her defensively. In fact, the only time she looked uncomfortable all day was when her hand smarted from a too-hard high-five from Lawson. Hampton looked over at the bench and made a theatrical show of grimacing and rubbing her hand. Much mirth and merriment all around.

But the big lead did not last for long. South Bay began to get the line themselves, led by Craig and her drives into the lane. Due to a short bench, East Bay players seemed to get a bit tired by the 4-minute mark. When Craig scored again on a good cut to the basket on an inbounds play, South Bay had regained the lead, 40-38. From there, Hampton and Lawson helped East Bay keep pace, and they took a 49-48 lead into halftime.

The second half was a seesaw affair, with neither team getting more than a five-point lead. Early in the half, after South Bay had just rained in a couple of threes and seemed to have gained some momentum, it was Jene Morris who stepped up to seize it back. With Gray-Lawson still ineffective, Morris ran the point and threaded the needle on a terrific assist to Wright. On the next possession, she stole the ball and sped downcourt for a fastbreak basket, bringing fans to their feet. Morris also became the primary defender on Craig, and she did a good job shutting off Craig’s drives to the basket. However, she was not as proficient at closing out on Craig’s jumper, and Craig hit 6 treys in the second half to keep South Bay in the game.

While Jessica Lawson played well in the first half, she quickly got into foul trouble in the second half and fouled out at the 14 minute mark. She vehemently protested the call - stomping to the corner of the court in protest - and was assessed a technical foul. She finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds. With Lawson gone, Hampton became the focus, and she was often doubled or even tripled in the post. She showed herself up to the task, hitting shots or getting to the foul line, where she was quite proficient. Walker also began to impose herself down low, grabbing rebounds that Hampton could not get to. Gray-Lawson then also picked up her game. Instead of going all the way to the basket, she would pull up or step back for jumpers, or hit a finger roll. And although she had some trouble hitting free-throws, she contributed to the final run that finally broke the game open.

Overall, Hampton was the star of the game for East Bay, and her versatility cannot be overstated. She was the clear go-to player down the stretch. But the other Bears also showed how they found their niche. Gray-Lawson (23 points) has the scorer’s mentality, and her specialty is the drive and dish. Walker showed that she could get up off the floor quicker than anyone else (at least 3 blocks to go with 15 points), and that she also has great hands and is a good passer as well. Wright proved that she could play in the up-tempo offense, and that she serves as a sort of steady connector between all of the other players. Morris is just a thoroughbred on the open floor, and her court vision might be her most impressive attribute.

Second Round: East Bay 81, San Francisco 76

On a cold and overcast Sunday afternoon (ah, summer in San Francisco), the East Bay (Bears) faced off against San Francisco, with a spot in the Championship game on the line. One wondered if East Bay would be able to have the same success they did the day before against such a different opponent. San Francisco is a team made up of veterans, many of whom have played together for years under coach Darlene Yee. And while South Bay played more the playground "what’s-a-pass?/there’s-a-shot-clock?" kind of game, San Francisco actually runs plays. Furthermore, they employ a zone defense, which might be effective against an East Bay team that did not hit one trey on Saturday. Finally, the back to back games might also hurt East Bay, who basically have a six-player rotation.

On the very first possession, East Bay played swarming defense and Jene Morris stole the ball, leading to a lay-up at the other end. That would be the only shot she’d make in the half, although she contributed with a great all-around floor game, with five assists alone in the first half.

Unfortunately, Morris seemed to be the only player who was playing with any kind of energy early on. The team as a whole seemed lacking the intensity of the day before. It didn’t help that San Francisco’s offense was designed to make defenders chase them all over the court, through screen after screen. One observer noted that it was tiring just to watch, much less play in such a game. San Francisco executed their game plan perfectly, patiently moving the ball until the East Bay defender was out of position, and then one of the SF veteran players would hit a hook shot or an uncontested jumper. Left open due to slow rotation on defense, former Bear Jacqueline Sanchez hit two consecutive 18-foot jumpers for San Francisco early in the half.

While East Bay managed to stay close early, it was clear that the tempo was being dictated by San Francisco. Fast breaks and offensive rebounds, both keys in the victory on Saturday, were scarce for East Bay, and the players were growing frustrated. It was the kind of game that was especially challenging for Jessica Lawson, who picked up 3 fouls in the first half, mostly on getting beat and then reaching. San Francisco began to live at the free-throw line. Alexis Gray-Lawson also struggled, at one point throwing a bad pass and then clearly upset, compounded the problem on the next possession, getting called for blocking foul. She too would end the half with 3 fouls.

Renee Wright, sensing her team was floundering, took some leadership. She corralled Gray-Lawson and calmed her down. She also took some of the offense on herself, taking eight shots in the first half. Devanei Hampton again came off the bench to give East Bay a lift. She scored 13 points on 5 of 6 shooting and also pulled 5 rebounds; she would finish with a game-high 25 points. After her tete-a-tete with Wright, Gray-Lawson composed herself and contributed a bunny in the lane, then a long three-pointer, East Bay’s only long-range bomb of the weekend. Still, East Bay reached halftime down seven points, 46-39.

The second half did not start much better, with East Bay again seeming lethargic and slow to react. They began to give up offensive rebounds, perhaps too tired to get off the ground. Luckily, San Francisco seemed tired as well, as they too had a very short bench. So 5 minutes in, the lead for San Francisco remained at 7, 53-46. Then all of sudden, East Bay made their run, powered by Morris and Walker. Morris, still struggling with her shot, began to create turnovers with her quick hands, which led to fastbreak baskets for other players. Walker, in the meantime, began to own the glass at both ends. A couple of times, she showed tenacity by putting up the ball again and again until she either made the shot or got the foul called or both. The way she gets up off the floor is reminiscent of former Warrior Antawn Jamison. Walker ended up with 13 boards in the second half, and 16 for the game. Her interior presence was especially important, since both Lawson and Hampton had four fouls for the most of the second half.

But just when East Bay seemed ready to put the game away, a strange sequence of events turned the game back in San Francisco’s favor. At the 3-minute mark, Jessica Lawson was called for her fifth foul. Coach Walker argued vociferously and got a technical. Three made free throws later, San Francisco had closed to within one point. It seemed like a huge swing in momentum, one that this young team might not be able to overcome.

Instead, East Bay showed that they had one more run left in them. In short order, Gray-Lawson curled around and hit a jumper. Then Jene Morris again came up with a couple of steals when they were most needed. Finally, Gray-Lawson, Walker, and Wright calmly sank all their free throws to close out the six point win. It was especially encouraging to see Gray-Lawson hit her free throws when the game was on the line; she finished with 14 points.

All in all, a big win over a veteran team, with contributions from everyone. It helps that so many of the players have a variety of skills, so each player was able to fill in where the team needs her most at that point. The thing that’s most impressive about the team so far is that even in this unstructured format, everyone was looking for everyone else. It also became clear to anyone who saw this team earlier in the summer how much they have improved as a team. "It’s because we’re getting more familiar with each other," said Ashley Walker.

Speaking of improvement, Walker seemed to have gotten in much better shape than earlier in the summer. She played the whole second half and seemed as fresh at the end as she did at the beginning of the game. When asked about it after the game, Walker credits the conditioning program at Cal. "We’re working so hard all the time, and I just feel my body getting in better shape already, even in the short time I’ve been at Cal. So I can just keep going and not feel tired."

East Bay takes on regular season champ Bay Tide, led by former USF star Toni Russell, next Saturday August 13, at 2 p.m. The game will be held at Kezar, and admission is free.

Other news and notes: Keanna Levy played on the South Bay team, but was limited by foul trouble…East Bay’s poor outside shooting performance may be explained by the summer workouts the Bears are going through. Lifting weights may have caused tired arms, and Morris said that before Sunday’s game, she shot more than 100 three-pointers at a workout…. There was a scary moment in the second half, when Hampton went down and stayed down for the possession. She walked gingerly off the court but returned within a minute and finished the game without any problems… Former Bear assistant coaches have landed on their feet, finding employment elsewhere. Camille Burkes is at UC Santa Barbara, and Sunny Smallwood has joined the staff at Nebraska. Kirsten McKnight is the head coach at Westmont College.
