Coach Boyle: Changing The Game, Part 1

The buzz you hear coming from Haas Pavilion? It’s coming from the office of coach Joanne Boyle. [Part one of a two part series.]

Since taking over the Cal women’s basketball program, the high-energy Boyle has created some serious positive vibes, with glowing reports coming from returning players. But perhaps her most impressive feat has been in the recruiting front, despite the fact that she has yet to secure a commitment. First, she came out of nowhere to place third in the Jayne Appel sweepstakes. And now, she is closing in on another local blue-chipper: Jacki Gemelos.

Coach Boyle sits down with the Bear Insider to reflect on her first few months on the job, with topics ranging from how she knew Cal was the right place for her to why she’s so intense on court. And oh yes, she discusses recruiting too…

Hi Coach. How’s it going? It’s been, what, almost 4 months now, since you’ve taken over…

End of April. It’s going well. I think any move, it’s a transition, and coming all the way from the East Coast to the West Coast is a different transition. So off the court there’s been that whole scenario in itself. But on the court, in terms of my team and my players and my staff, it’s been really good. I think when you take a job, you take it—just like a recruit looks at a school—because it’s a good fit for you. I loved my job at Richmond, and I loved the kids there, but the door of opportunity was open, and I looked. But it wasn’t until I came on campus here and spent about three hours with (Cal AD) Sandy (Barbour) that I thought, “This is a no-brainer.”

How is Cal such a perfect fit?

I learned a lot going from Duke to Richmond—what it was I needed on my plate to be successful. I’ve always been at an academic school. It’s my niche, and so I wouldn’t look unless a school was an academic school. At the same time, when you’re an academic school, you attract a certain kind of female athlete, and that’s my comfort zone, coaching academic kids. For me to recruit I need to be able sell my product—I buy into where I live and where I work. To be able to sell to a kid, I need to trust it.

I also think you have to look and see if you can win in your conference and go to the NCAA Tournament, because your success is measured by tournament appearances. There was a ton of jobs opened up this year, and I talked to Miami and Colorado and here. In the ACC it’s very top heavy—I know it very well—with Duke, Carolina, Maryland, some other schools. Colorado is in the same boat—the Big 12, very top heavy. In the Pac-10, I felt that Stanford has dominated for many years, and other teams are very good, but there hasn’t been a consistency of teams at the top. So if you’re going to make a move in a conference, I felt that the Pac-10 was probably an easier place to make that move.

Finally, Sandy by far was one of the top priorities and reasons I decided on Cal. After Duke and Richmond, I knew what I needed: I have to have an Athletic Director who understands what I need to be able to succeed. And she bought into everything we talked about; she gets it. She is really ten years ahead of her time in understanding what a coach needs to make a program successful. I wasn’t going to leave a situation where we just got into the top 25, if I didn’t feel that we’re on the same page with that, and she was.

Now I get here, and you have a beautiful campus, and a top-five recruiting class coming in, and great kids returning, and you’re like, “OK!” It was a no-brainer.

Anything surprised you so far about being at Cal?

The number of sports. Not running into every coach in the hallway, everyday, is different. I have always been at private, smaller schools—and then, just the challenges of starting a program. Thank goodness my staff wanted to come with me. It would have been a lot harder to make this move by myself, and have to re-invent the wheel.

But then to walk in to a bunch of upperclassmen—the freshmen weren’t here yet—for them to embrace us as a staff and say, “I’ll do anything. What do you want?”… For them to work as hard as they’ve worked, for the short time I’ve been here, and for them to really buy into what we’re trying to do.

Speaking of the returning players, how was the first meeting you had with them?

They were wide-eyed, like deer in the headlights, sitting in the room and wondering what was going to happen. I talked to them about being at Duke, where we were in 1992—dead last in the ACC. Started a walk-on point guard. Six players on the team. Then learning to build a program from the bottom to the top, and then staying there. And then going to Richmond and doing the same kind of thing. They had to trust that I knew how to do it, but saying it and doing it are two different things. We can all sit here and say, “Yeah we want to go the tournament,” but I will tell you what you have to do to get to that point.

I’ve heard how impressed people have been that you’ve really hit the ground running. It seems that you’ve gotten the team to really buy into your program.

From the beginning, I’ve sent the message that basketball now becomes your life. It’s a big part of who you are. From when you wake up, to when you go to bed, you are representing Cal women’s basketball, and there’s a lot that goes into that. You are carrying a torch for other players who are about to come in here. So it was almost a cultural change, and that it was not just about on-the-court stuff. It was about a change in your thought process, and about how to carry yourself as a Division I basketball player. We’ve had a lot of discussions about leadership—finding leaders, mentoring leaders, and about accountability—holding each other accountable. And trying to build this cohesive unit and develop chemistry off the court. It’s a process; it’s not just about basketball.

Now the basketball part of it was, OK, you don’t just walk on the floor for two and a half hours and think that’s enough. It’s weights, it’s individual workouts, it’s… You’ll work harder than you’ve ever had to work, because I will push the envelope until you just don’t think you can do it anymore. Then it’s getting up the next day and doing it again. It’s about eating right. It’s about getting stronger. It’s about laying out the entire day for them, day in and day out. So you don’t do that in a day; you don’t do that in six months. It’s a walk. And they walk it everyday, and they get used to it, and then it’s suddenly a part of who they are. For them to be on this walk with me, I think that’s kind the direction we’re headed.

I’m fascinated in anything related to leadership…

(Grabs a stack of books off her desk) Can I give you any more leadership books? I am Miss Leadership! (Laughs)

Never mind, I certainly don’t need more to read! I just like letting others do the reading and give me the highlights. OK, let’s talk a bit about long-range goals. You got a five-year contract, which is customary for a new coach. Do you have a five-year plan? What specific markers are you looking for along the way? I ask this in light of the fact that we just had two teams in the National Championship game—Baylor and Michigan State—whose coaches were in their fifth year at their schools. Is there more pressure now because how well those teams did?

I don’t think anybody will ever put any more pressure than I’ll put on myself, and the same for my staff. It’s just who we are; it’s just what we do. For me, I just don’t put a timeline on myself. Because of the things that have happened in my life, I’ve learned not to do that. I take it a day at a time, and I live my life by that. Not that you don’t have vision about what you want, but you can only take care of what you have at hand. Now do I have plans out there? I do. But for me, when you take over a new program, you have all these new kids, and you have to figure out that chemistry before you could look down the road.

Then, it’s about recruiting great kids, good people, good character, people who will run through a wall for you, as you will for them. And developing a relationship with your kids, so that they understand that it’s more than about basketball. Everything you’re teaching them is about life skills. You’re teaching them and they’re teaching you, it’s a give and take. And if you develop those relationships and that chemistry, the winning usually takes care of itself. Usually. I’ve learned that if I put all my eggs in one basket, then I’ve failed. It can’t be all about X’s and O’s, or about who do I schedule. Yes, all that is important… But more important, I need to build these kids to be the best people they can be, to own what they do, and own their team so I don’t have to own it for them. If I spend time doing that, then I think the wins come. Because chemistry is a big part of it, it’s not always about having the best players. I’ve always coached teams that we’ve been able to develop chemistry—some years better than others. You want your team to own the wins and losses, the good practices and the bad practices. So that development has to happen. And sometimes that takes longer on some teams than others. So it’s hard to look five years down the road when it’s about how quickly can we develop those kinds of things first, to get them established so that when kids come in, it’s just the norm. Right now, it’s very piecemeal, because they don’t know me well enough, I don’t know them. We’re trying to learn together and bring it to a head so that they can walk and run with it. How long is that going to take, I don’t know…

Looking at the team you have, what’s your assessment so far?

Well, I haven’t been able to work out with the freshmen. But working with the upperclassmen, I was pleasantly surprised, one, with their work ethic. I don’t think they understood what I meant when I said that they’d work hard. So after the first 3 weeks of individual workouts, they were like, “Oh my gosh, never…” And that’s good; I’d rather that happened in May than in September. And so it gave us a foundation to understand what they needed to do this summer. So I had some great workouts with the upperclassmen. Then you have a group of freshmen coming in that is very talented—two of whom I’ve seen a lot on the national scene. The others I haven’t seen play very much. Then now it’s about, how do you mesh them all together with the hardworking upperclassmen? Because half of your team are freshmen, and there are different issues with freshmen. You cannot teach experience; you have to go through it. How soon can they take on a level of responsibility? How soon can they fit into the chemistry already developed by the returning players? The best thing has been that we’ve had the whole team here for summer school. In September, when we step onto the floor, they would have worked through a lot of that stuff. So when I get them, we’ve taken care of some of those things.

Watch for Part Two on Tuesday.
