Bear Intelligence - 10/31/05

This week's Bear Intelligence looks at what Jeff Tedford had a hand in that no other Pac-10 team has been able to accomplish in the past 20 years, how many passes have been attempted to each of the Cal receivers, the ups and downs of Joe Ayoob, and the Golden Bear commit who scored all five of his team's touchdowns last week.

In the past 20 seasons, there have been 12 cases where a Pac-10 was coming off a nine-win-or-more season and was faced with the prospect of having to replace or face changes with its leading passer, runner, and receiver.  While some teams have been able to retool quite easily, for most teams the following year has been a rebuilding year. Eight of the 12 teams suffered dropoffs of three or more wins.  Only two of the 12 teams have been able to either maintain or improve their performance during the following season.

In 2005, California had to replace J.J. Arrington, Aaron Rodgers, and Geoff McArthur, who were not simply the team leaders in those three categories, but also the school's all-time single season leading rusher, the all-time career passing efficiency leader, and all-time leading receiver.  While the Golden Bears certainly had a talented corps of players to succeed the trio, it's a tough task to replace any one of those players following such a year, much less all three.

With six wins in the bag, Cal won't finish in the bottom half of this list, and depending on how things go, they could finish fairly high.

Washington State appears on list four times, suffering drops of four, five, and seven wins, but managing to replace their top trio after their 10-3 2002 season and following it up with a 10-3 2003 season.  In 2003, they replaced QB Jason Gesser, RB Jermaine Green, and WR Jerome Riley with QB Matt Kegel, RB Jonathan Smith, and WR Devard Darling. The Cougars saw changes in those three the following year and struggled to a 5-6 record.

The one team that actually improved after losing their top offensive trio was the 2000 Oregon Ducks.  They replaced A.J. Feeley, Reuben Droughns, and Tony Hartley with Joey Harrington, Maurice Morris and Keenan Howry and improved their record from 9-3 to 10-2.

Whatever happened to the offensive coordinator from that team, anyway?

Win diff. Team
+1 2000 Oregon (9-3 to 10-2)

Wide Receivers

Although the Bears have had their receiver trio of Jackson, Jordan, and Hawkins all healthy for just a handful of games, they've been the top targets of Cal's quarterbacks. The Bears are 61.7% when throwing to Jackson, 68.6% when throwing to Jordan, and 48.1% when throwing to Hawkins.

For those wondering about the use of running backs in the passing attack, Cal's 22-of-38 for 285 yards. The running backs have caught 22 of Cal's 116 pass completions, about 19%.  By comparison, last season, running backs caught 54 of Cal's 219 completions, or about 24.7%.  Even more interesting is that this year, of the five running backs who've been thrown passes, the leading receiver is Chris Manderino.

Success Percentage

The Washington State game was the first time where an opposing starting quarterback had a better success percentage than Cal's starting quarterback.  Success percentage doesn't weigh the fourth quarter any differently, thus UCLA's Matt Moore's fourth quarter couldn't overcome a desultory second and third quarter, and Joe Ayoob's 4-for-20 fourth quarter against Oregon State doesn't unduly influence a very good third quarter and a decent second quarter.

While the Cougars' Alex Brink did complete several long passes and throw for five touchdowns, his success percentage was hurt because he completed less than 45% of his passes.

Joe Ayoob's Best Quarters

Due partly to video games, fantasy leagues, and just plain irrationality, there's a tendency to think of athletes as automatons. If they play well, it's because they're supposed to. If they don't it's because of a mental or physical deficiency that should cause them to hang their heads in shame and cower for eternity. Or something like that.   Nevermind that athletic performance, like a Bruce Springsteen album or a Spike Lee movie is never as good or as bad as people make it out to be.

Although Ayoob's play has certainly been subject to ups and downs, he has had some very good quarters this year.

Thunder and Lightning

Seeing as these two will be playing together for at least another season and a half, someone might want to come up with a snappy nickname for the two and slap it onto a navy t-shirt that can be marketed to people who don't concern themselves that getting everyone to wear the same color may be a totalitarian plot.

Lynch has adapted well to being a running back who now carries the ball 20 times a game, consistently averaging five and six yards a carry. Even the game where he was held out in the 2nd half against Oregon State, he had a very respectable 4.2 yard per carry average. Now that he's returning kickoffs, he should start racing up the NCAA all-purpose yardage leader list.

Forsett continues to average more than 8 yards a carry with an astounding 35% of his runs going for either first downs or touchdowns.  With Lynch seeing kickoff return duty, Forsett is now getting carries early in possessions.

Inside the 30

As the caliber of opposition has increased in the past three games, California has begun to struggle inside the opponent's 30-yard line. Had the Bears been able to convert one of their four field goals into a touchdown, it could have changed the outcome of the game.  Cal's limited success against Washington State allowed the Cougars to hang around until the final possession.

Pop culture tip:   Back in late 70s, soft drinks were small, medium, and large, which have nothing to do today with what passes for a small, medium, or large. You could easily find a cafeteria or a laundromat where you could pit in a quarter (or even a dime if you were lucky) in a dispense and a cup would come down the chute, followed by ice, syrup, and soda water, and you'd have your drink. Then 7-11 came and changed the game, introducing the Big Gulp.  At a then-hefty 32 ounces, one wondered who could every be thirsty enough to drink all of that, but with a promotional price of 29 cents, it was certainly worth a try.  Eventually, the Big Gulp spawned additional versions, such as the Super Big Gulp and the Double Gulp. The Double Gulp is 64 ounces. To get an idea of how big that is, take a six-pack, dump five of those cans into a large cup/bowl/trough, and you're almost there.  The benefit of a Double Gulp is that a) you'll have enough beverage to get you through a long football game, b) that includes room for ice that'll ensure that the drink stays cold from the time you pick it up at the 7-11 until the Cal Marching Band takes the field after the game, c) it's half the price of your other options.  Although the Big Gulp no longer seems unique in its bigness - heck, go into Carl's Jr. and ask for a medium and look at the size of the cup you get - it's unique in its marketing.  It's not a new product, it's never not been anything but somebody else's product.  Creating brand recognition simply by redesigning a paper (now plastic) cup? That's genius.

Games of interest...Anybody travelling up to the Oregon game on Saturday who finds themselves in the Portland area on Friday might want to go see Beaverton and Kevin Riley.  Century High School is 1-7, so Riley may not be doing too much more than handing off in the second half.
