"I can't wait to get down to Cal and join the team," said an enthusiastic Riley. "Sometimes it's hard to focus on things since I'm looking so forward to being down there, but I have to stay focused on my basketball season and school and all and take care of business.
"Our season's going okay," noted Riley. "We're 8-6 and 4-4 in league. I'm averaging @9 points and 8 assists a game. It's a little bit difficult to transition between football and basketball, but it's fun.
Inevitably, high profile players that commit early continue to hear from competing programs to test the waters and see if a player's commitment is a strong one. Riley talked a little bit about this process.
"I committed pretty early and early on I heard from an occasional coach," said Riley. But I always told them firmly but nicely that I wasn't interested and that my verbal to Cal was solid.
"It's funny: The other day, (Oregon State HC) Mike Riley was on campus talking with one of our players. When I recognized him, I tried to turn around and head another way to avoid an awkward situation but he spotted me. He said, "There's a guy I should punch in the mouth," laughed Riley, presumably in reference to Riley's decision to not stay home and play for the Beavers and instead commit to Cal. "That was the extent of our conversation, though."
Riley's mother Rhonda also checked in on the subject of recruiting.
"Kevin really was sold on Cal early," said Rhonda Riley. "He wanted to commit to Cal on the spot when he was down for camp this summer.
"Coach Tedford warned us that a lot of schools would be after Kevin after he committed to Cal and he told us a lot of the stuff that we'd be likely to hear –that he wasn't big or strong enough to play quarterback at Cal and that he'd be better off somewhere else. Sure enough, we hear a lot of that stuff, but we just kept in mind what Coach Tedford said: "If they try and tell you any of that stuff, just tell them I said he's going to be great."
Riley currently is up to 204 lbs. At 6-1, he's gradually growing into his body. With increased size along with an excellent arm that earned him the honor of "Best Release" at last summer's Elite 11 camp, Cal fans are expecting big things from the talented Riley and are anxiously awaiting the arrival of his LOI next Wednesday.
