Pac-10 Football? Experience Counts

As was so clearly illustrated in the 2005 season, experience is a critical factor in determining the success of a college football team. In the second installment of a continuing series of articles on the college football scene, this article examines who returns to play for each Pac-10 school.

p>USC and UCLA were hit the hardest after the 2005 season. The Trojans and Bruins lost thirteen and eleven starters respectively. Arizona and Oregon State return the greatest number of starters, seventeen.

Recently, the "best predictor" of future success in the Pac-10 has been whether a team returns its starting quarterback from the previous season. In 2006, Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon State, Stanford, Washington and WSU meet this test; it's anybody's guess what will happen in Berkeley.

Here is a team-by-team review of starters ...

Arizona

Defense - 9 return
Offense - 7 return
Total - 17, including the PK/P

Key losses - All Pac-10 1st Team safety Darrell Brooks and a pair of All Pac-10 2nd Teamers, DE Copeland Bryan and Punter Danny Baugher.

Key returnees - CB Antoine Cason, WR Syndric Steptoe (#8 in the Pac-10 in All-Purpose yardage/game), WR Mike Thomas (#9 in Receptions/game) and PK/P Nick Folk

Overall - The 'Cats took a big hit along the OL, losing three starters from 2005, including OT Peter Graniello (All Pac-10 Honorable Mention). QB Willie Tuitama will arrive on campus in the fall firmly entrenched in the starting role. On defense, much depends on whether D-Liners Gabe Long and Louis Holmes can qualify. Both signed LOIs in December but neither could meet the requirements necessary to enroll in the spring. Wildcat fans must now hope they: a) address their academic shortcomings; b) do not change their minds about attending Arizona since neither can sign another LOI with the 'Cats.

Arizona State

Defense - 5 return
Offense -8 return
Total - 14, including the PK/P

Key losses - All Pac-10 1st Teamers WR Derek Hagan (#3 in receptions/game), LB Dale Robinson (#3 in tackles/game) and a quartet of defensive backs who accounted for 29 starts between them, Mike Davis, Maurice London, Josh Golden and R.J. Oliver.

Key returnees - All Pac-10 1st team Kick Returner Terry Richardson and six players who earned All Pac-10 Honorable Mention, including O-Liners Brandon Rodd and Andrew Carnahan and TE Zach Miller. Also, Sam Keller and Rudy Carpenter return to compete for starting QB.

Overall - If either RB Keegen Herring (9th in rushing yards/game) or RB Rudy Burgess (All Pac-10 Honorable Mention) can bring some balance to the ASU offensive attack, the Devils will be explosive on offense. The key to ASU's season will be whether they can successfully replace the five starters on the 'Devils "Back Seven" whose eligibility expired after the 2005 season.

California

Defense - 7 return
Offense - 7 return
Total - 15, including the PK

Key losses - Three starting O-Liners, Aaron Merz and a pair of 1st Team All Pac-10 selections, Marvin Philip and Ryan O'Callaghan, and both starting safeties, Harrison Smith and Donnie McCleskey.

Key returnees - The Bears return four starters who earned All Pac-10 recognition in 2005, 1st Teamers DT Brandon Mebane and CB Donte Hughes, and 2nd Teamers LB Desmond Bishop and DE Nu'u Tafisi. In addition, WR DeSean Jackson and RB Marshawn Lynch will return to provide the Bears with a powerful one/two punch on offense and DE Phillip Mbakogu and LB Mickey Pimental will be back to wreak havoc defensively.

Overall - Cal can contend for the conference championship if they successfully answer two questions: a) can the Bears find a quarterback who can play consistent, quality football? b) are the Mikes (Gibson and Tepper) up to the challenge of playing at the level of a BCS conference?

Oregon

Defense - 5 return
Offense - 8 return
Total - 15, including the PK/P

Key losses - All Pac-10 1st DT Haloti Ngata, CB Justin Phinisee and a trio of All Pac-10 2nd Teamers, Safety Anthony Trucks (#1 in Fumbles Forced/game and Sacks/game), CB Aaron Gipson and WR Demetrius Williams.

Key returnees - The entire starting OL (they accounted for 53 of the 55 starts in 2005) will be back along with a trio of All Pac-10 honorees, 2nd Teamer J.D. Nelson and All Pac-10 Honorable Mention honorees, Rover Patrick Chung and WR James Finley.

Overall - Either Dennis Dixon or Brady Leaf needs to step up and become the clear #1 QB. One of the three freshmen RBs, Jonathan Stewart, Jeremiah Johnson or Terrell Jackson must establish himself as the primary RB. On defense, the Ducks will have to reload the D-Line and defensive backfield where they return only two of eight starters."

Oregon State

Defense - 7 return
Offense - 9 return
Total - 17, including the PK

Key losses - The Beavers lose a quartet of All Pac-10 1st Team selections, P Sam Paulescu, WR Mike Hass (#1 in receptions and receiving yardage/game) and LBs Keith Ellison and Trent Bray (#1 in tackles/game) and both DTs S. Henry Anderson and Alvin Smith.

Key returnees - A group of five offensive linemen who did not miss a start in 2005 (55/55), 1st Team All Pac-10 PK Alexis Serna (#1 in percentage of FGs made), RB Yvenson Bernard (#3 in rushing yards/game) and TE Joe Newton will be back after missing 2005 because of an injury.

Overall - The Beavers will go as far as quarterback Matt Moore (#6 in Pac-10 passing efficiency) takes them. Unfortunately for OSU, he will enter the season without Haas, the nation's leading receiver (measured in yards/game) in 2005. On defense, the loss of four of the Beavers' "Front Seven" starters will force Oregon State to reload upfront in a hurry if they are to remain competitive.

Stanford

Defense - 6 return
Offense - 9 return
Total - 16, including P

Key losses - All Pac-10 Honorable Mention awardees LB Jon Alston and DE Julian Jenkins and defensive stalwarts DT Babatunde Oshinowo, CB T.J. Rushing and LB Kevin Schimmelmann have exhausted their eligibility.

Key returnees - QBs Trent Edwards and T. C. Ostrander return along with WR Mark Bradford. On defense, the Cardinal returns CB Nick Sanchez and SS Brandon Harrison (#8 and #12 respectively among Pac-10 returnees in tackles/game).

Overall - The bad news: Stanford is the only team in the conference that will not welcome back a single member of the 2005 All Pac-10 team, the conference's worst (42 sacks surrendered) O-Line returns intact and the Cardinal cannot count on any immediate help: Stanford's 2006 class of recruits ranked 10th in the Pac-10. The good news: The new stadium should be ready on time.

UCLA

Defense - 6 return
Offense - 6 return
Total - 13, including P

Key losses - Four members of the All Pac-10 team, Mercedes Lewis, 1st Team, and RB Maurice Drew, QB Drew Olson and LB Spencer Havner, 2nd Team, headline the second largest group of departing starters in the Pac-10.

Key returnees - Three All Pac-10 Honorable Mention honorees, FB Michael Pitre, DE Justin Hickman and OG Shannon Tevaga return along with Ben Olson, the highly touted transfer from Brigham Young University.

Overall - The biggest challenge facing UCLA in 2006 is to replace Offensive Coordinator Tom Cable who played a critical role in the resurgence of the Bruins offensive attack over the last several years. Also, UCLA must hope that either Chris Markey or Kahlil Bell can fill the rather large shoes left by Drew, and that new Defensive Coordinator DeWayne Walker can find a way to improve the Bruins rushing defense (116th out of 117 schools in the NCAA).

Southern California

Defense - 6 return
Offense - 4 return
Total - 11, including PK

Key losses - Twelve starters, the punter and one key reserve left the program following the 2005 season. RBs Reggie Bush and Lendale White, O-Liners Fred Matua and Winston Justice and Safety Darnell Bing all declared for the NFL draft. QB Matt Leinart, P Tom Malone, FB David Kirtman, TE Dominique Byrd, O-Liner Taitusi Lutui, D-Liners Frostee Rucker and DeJuan Ramsey, and DBs Scott Ware and Justin Wyatt exhausted their eligibility. All of these players, except Byrd, received All Pac-10 recognition following the season.

Key returnees - Several highly regarded O-Liners are ready to take their place at the top of the Trojan depth chart, including Kyle Williams, Chilo Rachal and Jeff Byers (coming off a medical redshirt year). QBs Mark Sanchez and John Booty will battle for the right to pass the ball to Dwayne Jarrett (First Team All Pac-10) and Steve Smith (Honorable Mention All Pac-10). On defense, the entire starting linebacking corps returns intact. Among the reserves ready to step up are DE Jeff Schweiger and CB Kevin Thomas.

Overall - Can you say, "Reload"? Yes, Troy will be hard-pressed to continue their 32 game regular season winning streak through the 2006 season. Even so, they remain the team to beat in the Pac-10.

Washington

Defense - 8 return
Offense - 6 return
Total - 15, including P

Key losses - Three members of the Husky O-Line departed along with both starting RBs. On defense, a pair of All Pac-10 LBs, Joe Lobendahn (2nd Team) and Evan Benjamin (Honorable Mention), completed the final year of their careers with a flourish, finishing the 2005 season ranked #3 and #7 respectively in the Pac-10 in tackles/game.

Key returnees - The entire defensive backfield returns intact along with three of the D-Liners. On offense, both of the starting WRs, Sonny Shackleford and Anthony Russo are back along with starting QB Isiash Stanback. P Sean Douglas (All Pac-10 Honorable Mention) returns on special teams.

Overall - UW has a long way to go to reach respectability. The Huskies desperately need an infusion of talent and must hope the seven JC players recruited this year will bring immediate improvement to this downtrodden program.

Washington State

Defense - 7 return
Offense - 7 return
Total - 15, including PK

Key losses - 1st Team All Pac-10 RB Jerome Harrison (#1 in the Pac-10 in rushing yards/game), and a pair of 2nd Team All Pac-10 selections in OC Nick Mihlhauser and TE Troy Bienemann. On defense, LB Will Derting (Honorable Mention All Pac-10) and both cornerbacks Alex Teems and Wally Dada have utilized all their eligibility.

Key returnees - QB Alex Brink (#2 in passing efficiency among returning QBs) and a threesome of All Pac-10 honorees from 2005, Jason Hill and Bruce Mkristo (Second Team) and Michael Bumpus (Honorable Mention) along with both DTs Aaron Johnson and Fevaea'i Ahmu.

Overall - While Brink to Hill is the #1 returning QB/WR combination in the Pac-10 (61 pass receptions), the season rests on the ability of the Cougars to successfully find a replacement for Harrison. DeMaaundray Woolridge (6.0 yds/rushing attempt) is the leading candidate. On defense, the Cougars will feature DE Mkristo Bruce (2nd Team All Pac-10) who is the conference's #1 returning player in both sacks/game and TFLs/game and a pair of players who were named to the Sporting News' Pac-10 All Freshman team, Fevaea'i Ahmu and Greg Trent.
