Followup Interview: Jack Clark

The incident that occurred at the University of Washington on Monday, March 27th involving Cal rugby team's abandonment of a match in progress was and remains of serious concern to me as an alumni and supporter of the Cal rugby program. Incidents such as this, and the varying accounts of them, have a way of taking on a life of their own.

To gain a better understanding of the factual circumstances giving rise to the incident, the possible derivation of its source(s) and a more complete accounting of the actions that occurred during the incident and in the immediate aftermath, a credible analysis necessarily requires a careful search for the facts.

As a former rugby player under Jack Clark, at Cal and with the USA Rugby national team, an assistant coach under his guidance at Cal for two years, and a regular attendee at Cal rugby games in Strawberry Canyon for the better part of the past two decades, I have forged a strong personal relationship with Cal rugby's head coach of the past 22 years, 18 of which have ended with national championship banners adorning the fence surrounding beautiful Witter Field.

I have spoken to many people over the past several days regarding the subject incident in an effort to gain more perspective. I had an opportunity to interview Coach Clark and discuss his account of this unpleasant topic as well as his view of the public sentiment expressed in the days since the incident occurred. As a former player and long time friend, some of the questions posed to him were difficult, both for me to ask and for him to answer. In the end, however, I believe we both realized that this was the right approach for the purpose of arriving at the truth.

The following is what Coach Clark had to say concerning the incident and his philosophy on how it was handled by all sides, including some of the public comments on various websites like The Bear Insider.

You recently issued a personal statement concerning the abandonment of Cal's match with the University of Washington. Why did you take that step?

I reluctantly released that statement. I would have been happier to just quietly work through the process, but there was so much bad information and speculation being discussed, I felt I had to provide my account.

In your account, you stated that your reason for abandoning the match was a player safety concern and some have suggested that this is a smoke screen for a conflict with the match referee; I would like you to address this.

Both issues occurred. We had a player safety concern that the referee was not willing to address and I had also disagreed with a call. Disagreed, I would add, in a non-abusive way.

But listen, this referee was non-responsive to our safety concerns as registered through our match captain, and he was aggressive towards us as a team. I had no intention of leaving that enclosure and allowing that referee to have control over those lads in my charge. It would have been the easy option, but the easy option is often the wrong option.

Have you ever abandoned a match previously?

Yes, and if I coach a few more years, as I intend to, it may happen again.

I've seen a steel manhole cover on the field and a concrete curb next to the sideline on different occasions and refused to put our team on the field in each instance until it was safely covered.

We've had lightening in the sky, and the referee's determination was to continue to play because it appeared to him to be at a safe distance. I pulled our team until it passed.

And if presented with the same situation in the future, where the referee has an agenda that could put our boys at risk, I'll pull the team again. This was our reserve grade, playing in a "friendly", and as the NCAA commercial says, these boys are going pro in something other than rugby. I accept the job of challenging them as athletes, but I also accept the responsibility to protect them as young men.

Some of the response has been very negative. Do you have second doubts?

Yes it has, and no I don't second-guess my decision. I'm philosophical about the criticism. We have been on top for a long time, defeated a lot of teams. Hell, I'm sure I didn't select someone when I was the national team coach who thinks he was a star. There are plenty of reasons for people to have grudges and I accept that. There is a price to leadership, others will always debate or criticize your decision. At the end of the day, you can only stand on your body of work and make decisions in the best interest of your players and our team values.

Some of the criticism has come from Cal backers. Are you also philosophical about this criticism?

With all due respect coach, no comment is a bad answer.

[Long pause] No, I'm not philosophical about that criticism. It hurts. It breaks my heart. There you go, a little self-pity, isn't it unflattering?

What has the response been from the players?

Very supportive and generous. We care about each other, it's what I would have anticipated but it's still very heartwarming, and the parents of our players have also been very supportive. We feel like an extremely tight team at present.

You mentioned there is a process for the resolution of this matter. Can you explain the steps and potential outcomes?

The referee writes a report and submits the report to his local administration. They make a ruling and forward it to the Northern California rugby administration. These two steps have occurred. The timeline of the referee's report of the incident is far different than mine, and, thankfully, those of many other first hand witnesses. At discrepancy is when he issued his red card. His report reads that it was before we abandoned the match, which was not the case. The video is also quite helpful in this and other regards. Our local administration has refused to accept the Pacific Northwest's decision; therefore this will end up in (an) appeal somewhere.

I could wait for the appeal to be heard before doing anything, but I've decided to stand down Saturday in our match with Chico. We have earned the right to go through as the Pacific Coast #1 seed on victory and bonus points, so the Chico match has less importance than some believe. I will also stand down on our TBA match on the 8th of April. Hopefully, there will be a resolution by that time and I'll go from there. In the meantime, there is no restriction against me leading our training sessions, which is an important aspect of my job.

Why is the timing of the Red Card important?

Because [the referee] issued it after the game was over, without cause. We had already abandoned the match; he called me on to the field for a lecture. I told him I didn't need to listen anymore and then he carded me. He can carry those cards around in his pocket 24 hours a day if he wants. He can follow people home and red card them in their driveway if it makes him happy, but it's all theater.

In your defense, it doesn't appear that you have said much in your two run-ins with referees this year, but you do seem to want to have the last word, true?

I suppose. Maybe I've been guilty of being stubborn, but not abusive. The one thing in the referee report that we both agree on is what I said, "we were on our feet." I find it an abuse of his authority as a referee to treat these comments with the measures he has. My comments were not disrespectful, nor personal towards the ref. They were technical in nature.

I have a great respect for competent referees, but let's remember that they are there to serve the game.

You have an extraordinary 24-year record of success and achievement with no personal disciplinary action until this year, how will you make this an aberration as opposed to a trend?

If we continue to be successful, we will continue to be a target so it will remain difficult. It becomes easier to issue cards with each subsequent situation.

I thought the NYAC (the New York Athletic Club) had a good approach to the referee. They accepted the match with Cal conditional (upon using) the referee of their choice, a top class referee from Arizona. I should have been aware enough to make that a condition of the fixture in Seattle, because I was well warned that this guy would assign himself to the match and there would be problems.

So to answer your question, I believe I will need to be more aware of where the bear traps are. But be clear, I won't let our players be bullied or put at risk (just) for fans to think that I'm a model sportsman in their eyes.
