800m star, Alysia Johnson

The Bear Insider decided to check in with Cal Track & Field 800m star, Alysia Johnson, after the conclusion of what many veteran track and field fans would call a dream season.

The vivacious Cal sophomore who hails from the same high school as Cal quarterback Nate Longshore (Canyon High of Canyon Country, Southern California), put together an amazing string of personal records (PRs) heading into post season competition.

Her second place showing in the 800m finals of the Pac-10 Conference Championships with a time of 2:06.85 proved to be merely a tune-up for what was to come. At the NCAA Regionals in Provo, Utah, Johnson suffered from some sluggishness due to an academic conflict with finals week. Nonetheless, the confident Cal sophomore posted yet another runner-up finish to Oregon's Rebekah Noble with a time of 2:08.04. The top five automatically qualified for the NCAAs in Sacramento.

It was there in Sacramento, on the biggest stage of college track and field, that Johnson put together a string of very impressive performances, from the quarterfinals to the finals, that will undoubtedly cement her place on the NCAA 800m scene as one of the top three performers in the country.

In 2005, Johnson made the NCAA 800m finals as a freshman. It was a tremendous feat for the former CIF State High School Champion due to some nagging injuries and issues with her hamstring. Her time of 2:05.49 in the NCAA finals was good enough for 7th place and "All-American" status, placing her fifth on the Cal all-time Top 10 list.

Although some had expected her to be even more competitive, Johnson said at the time, "It was my first time running 3 rounds like that. It certainly takes some getting used to. You have the prelims, then the semis, and then the finals. I PRd twice that week, so I was pretty happy with how things went on my first trip to NCAAs."

This season, Johnson showed signs of brilliance when she posted a 53.01 PR in the 400m at the 112th Big Meet against the Stanford Cardinal. Until then, she had not raced many 800s as she and head women's coach Tony Sandoval decided to place an emphasis on being patient with the season and working on her speed. Her 53.01 was good enough for fourth place all-time on the Bear's Top 10 list. Furthermore, that mark also placed Alysia with the 3rd fastest 400m of the season for the entire Pac-10 Conference.

It was a sign of great things to come.

As one might expect with the cold and rainy spring this year, Ms. Johnson suffered from a number of sick days that not only tested her physical strength, but her mental toughness as well.

"I had run great workouts all season long. I never had a workout where I felt like I needed to ease up, or bomb-out. I felt real strong. But after the NCAA Regionals in Provo, I needed a rest . . . so Coach Sandoval and I decided to take a week off before the NCAAs."

When asked about her relationship with Coach Sandoval and his ability to listen to his athletes, Johnson replied, "Tony is like a father-figure. He is an incredibly warm individual - he's very open and listens well. So when I told him I started to feel fatigued after the Regionals he had no problem with me taking a week off. I still went on a few 30-minute runs, but I stayed off the track. In the end, it was the right decision and worked out great for me."

The 800m at the NCAA Division 1 level is often one of the most competitive events in the meet, and usually includes a very deep field. This year was no exception - as evidenced by the top times in the nation. In fact, heading into the NCAA meet, the top three 800m times in the nation were run by freshmen. Michigan's Geena Gall and Minnesota's Heather Dorniden had already posted 2:02.7s - with Johnson's Pac-10 rival, Rebekah Noble of Oregon having run a 2:02.85.

This year, the top ten times in the country included efforts by 5 juniors and 2 sophomores - and were all under 2:06.14. In fact, Alysia Johnson's season best of 2:06.85 at the Pac-10 Conference Championships in mid-May ranked her merely 23rd in the nation.

Asked if Johnson was in awe of the young freshmen in her event - or if she ever took a look at the times of her competitors, national rankings, etc., the Cal sophomore replied, "No, I don't. Quite frankly it's a waste of time. When I step out onto the track to race, everyone is my competition. That way, I stay hungry. Although I have a general sense of what the times are, it is not something that I dwell on. Again, everyone in my race is a competitor. You just can't take the 800m for granted. You have to be hungry every time you step onto the track."

In Sacramento, Johnson easily won her preliminary 800m heat with a time of 2:05.10.

It was not only another PR by 4/10s of a second for the well-rested sophomore but also the beginning of a tremendous progression. In the semis the next day, Alysia came down lower still. Her time of 2:04.76 was again the top time for the entire field. When asked if it was difficult to muster those two PRs in the opening rounds, Johnson said, "I couldn't believe how easy they felt! Each time I ran, I kept coming back to Tony and telling him that they felt like I had just jogged a 2:08." Obviously brimming with confidence, Johnson was primed to due some real damage in Saturday's finals.

On Saturday June 10th, with one day of rest, the 800m final saw Johnson getting out fast and running comfortably thru the first 400m, in 61 seconds. The entire field was still in contention, and track and field fans were about to be treated to a history making performance in more ways than one. Entering the backstretch the group of three freshmen, Noble, Dorniden, and Gall started to put some distance on the rest of the field, making a move away from the pack. Tennessee junior Leslie Treherne was just ahead of Johnson as the entire group hit the 600m mark in approximately 1:31.

In a field as fast as this, there is simply no margin for error. Getting boxed-in, being out of position, or being the recipient of an ill-timed shove from behind almost guarantees an unsatisfactory finish. And coming thru the final turn - Johnson got held-up a bit behind Tennessee's Treherne.

It was just enough of a pause to allow Oregon's Rebekah Noble to break free for the win, sprinting down the front stretch with Minnesota's Heather Dorniden in hot pursuit. Noble finished with a furious kick in 2:02.07. It was the first time that a freshman had ever won an NCAA Outdoor 800m Championship.

Johnson got past Treherne coming off the final turn, then moved past Michigan's Geena Gall to grab 3rd place in 2:03.04, just .02 off Dorniden's time. Had there been just a little more real estate, Johnson would have claimed second as she and Oregon's Noble were clearly the fastest runners down the home stretch.

But yet again, the best was still to come, albeit with a familiar twist.

Johnson entered the U.S. Outdoor Nationals in Indianapolis, just a week and a half after her NCAA 800m Final. It was to be her first big venture running with the "Big Dogs." Hazel Clark, Frances Santin, Nikeya Green, Krista Ferrara, and Alice Schmidt - all veteran 800m runners and the best that the United States offers to the Olympic ranks.

Unfortunately, Monday of the week leading into the Nationals saw Johnson come down sick yet again. She was congested, her nose was running, and she was anything but 100%. As much as she tried to take her illness in stride, anxiety set in as she debated whether to work out or rest.

"I left for Indy on Wednesday and I felt incredibly nauseous during the prelims," said Johnson. Still she was able to qualify for the finals with a respectable 2:03.92

"I drank herbal teas and stayed on top of my protein and iron intake," said Johnson.
"I figured that I had a day to rest before the finals on Sunday so I just tried to stay mellow and take everything in stride. By Sunday she was feeling a little better, and a fortuitous rain delay resulted in live ESPN coverage for her race - instead of the usual tape-delayed broadcast. It also gave Johnson another hour and a half of rest before the finals.

This time, the race developed at a faster pace than the NCAAs as the tightly grouped pack posted a 59 second first lap. Twenty-nine year old veteran and former two-time Olympian Hazel Clark pushed the pace early at the 500m mark, along with former NCAA runner-up Alice Schmidt.

No one was going to be touching these two as they came thru the 600m mark in 1:29.00 - Cal's Johnson was about 10 meters back , running with Erin Donahue of Nike and Krista Ferarra of the Nike Farm Team.

With 200m left, Johnson started a vicious kick. "I felt wonderful with 200m to go. It was the most controlled race that I had ever run!" When later asked what she meant by controlled, Johnson said, "In college there is usually a frantic pace. The competitors in the race aren't very smooth and the rhythm of the race is almost always erratic. But not here. Not with these vets."

In the end, two-time Olympian Hazel Clark was able to hold on, just nipping Alice Schmidt in 1:59.94 vs. 2:00.00 - Frances Santin of the Santa Monica Track Club ran a PR for third in 2:01.15, and Cal's very own Alysia Johnson claimed fourth with yet another impressive PR of 2:01.80, shaving a huge 1.25 seconds off her time just two weeks earlier in Sacramento.

Only Cal school record holder Louise Romo has run the 800m faster as a Bear, recording a 2:01.59 twenty-two years ago in 1984. At this point in her young career, the question is not if the school record in the 800m will be broken, but when Alysia Johnson will break it and by how much.

A great story will unfold next year at the NCAAs in Sacramento. If this year's athletes stay healthy and are able again to participate, the 800m final will be an outstanding event; the stadium should be filled with Bear fans.
