Tedford Finds Rocky Bottom

Nate Longshore talked about how he and his teammates were glad to be finally facing the Tennessee Volunteers, so they would not have to listen to Rocky Top played at 6:30 every morning as it has been since last spring.

As it turns out, Rocky Top was the sound track behind the answer to the musical question "What is the sound of 107,000 cans of whup-ass being opened at the same time?"

Cal coach Jeff Tedford spoke of improved team speed in the 2006 squad, in hopes of putting the Texas Tech nightmare permanently behind them. Instead, it was Cal's beleaguered secondary that was permanently behind.

Football games are won and lost in the trenches, it is said. This one was lost on a kickoff, when tight end Craig Stevens learned first hand how fast, and how strong Philip Fulmer's Tennessee team is. Stevens could probably pass a lie detector test when asked if he has ever set foot in Tennessee, so firmly was he separated from his sensibilities on the opening kickoff return.

I don't want to leave the impression that this game was all bad, all the time. One Golden Bear stood out all afternoon - JC transfer punter Andrew Larson, whose seven kicks averaged 41.6 yards. Let's hope this is the most work he gets all season.

This was, without question, a reality-check. Nationally-ranked? How about nationally "rank"?

ESPN's telecast to a national audience began with a listing of the "difference-makers" on each squad. All American defensive tackle Brandon Mebane's name was mentioned. It was next heard halfway through the third quarter, by which time his Bears were staring down the wrong end of a 35-0 shotgun barrel.

Possibly the worst news of the day is that a representative of the national championship Fiesta Bowl was on hand to witness the cavalcade of futility. There's no hiding from this one. It was the worst game in toto, of the Tedford era, and there's nothing in second place.

Though this was just one game - and in theory "anything can happen" - it seems there are only two possible ways that a Cal football player will get into the Fiesta Bowl this year. The most reasonable scenario involves buying into the StubHub-eBay daily double. The other, though somewhat less likely than Pluto winning a court case for a recount, involves Tennessee and Cal both running the table with authority to set up a revenge-match on January 8, 2007 - with the national title at stake.

As ludicrous as that sounds right now, it's actually more likely that Cal would live up to its end of that bargain than Tennessee.

The Vols play in the Southeast Conference, a part of America where only the real God on Sunday can compete for primacy with the false one of Saturday afternoon -- this is football country, by God (or is it God country, by Bryant?).

They take their pigskin seriously here, so seriously that Tennessee may be only the third best team in that conference, despite the old-fashioned trip out back of the woodshed that stood in for their season opener.

What were we thinking, people? A top-10 team that did not know until Tuesday who its quarterback was? That's not a real confidence-builder.

Now let's not get bogged down in assessing blame here, or we may not resurface until the Oregon State game. Blame is not a worthwhile exercise for graduates of, or even fans of, such an august institution of higher learning.

Because, truly, it was our fault, too.

Sure, it hurt to watch that game, primarily because we all wanted to believe in a very different outcome - that the Golden Bears were going to break out the TedSpread and blow through the orange-clad linebackers with a total of 40 plays of game experience like you-know-what through a goose.

But, on further review … Cal played with a brand-new offensive line. They may be great individually, but most of their predecessors are in the NFL, and it takes time for an offensive line time to come together. If Cal played Tennessee in the bye-week, October 28, this might have been a very different game.

But not for a season opener. If ever a team needed a Sacramento State across the line of scrimmage on opening day, it was this one.

The offensive line did not block well, did not work well as a unit, and did not protect the quarterbacks very well.

Jeff Tedford has developed a hell of a lot more, and better, quarterbacks than I have, but what little I do understand about the spread offense ("Touchdown, Red Raiders!") suggests that it has a better chance of success with a mobile quarterback - after all, it's the offense that Joe Ayoob was running at SFCC when he was recruited to Cal.

Nate Longshore may well be the better quarterback of the two - but remember, he has had just 23 minutes of major-college experience, all of it against Sac State.

He suffered a season ending injury last year, and spent most of the time between then and now rehabilitating. And, given that, and the lack of support up front, his performance was understandable, if painful, to watch. His receivers dropped at least 5 balls - I ran out of fingers to count on while trying to one-hand this column. (Editor's note: others have said 8).

The offensive line didn't blow open any holes for Marshawn Lynch or Justin Forsett - while, a couple of hours later and 300 or so miles to the south, Pete Carroll introduced the nation to John David Heisman, his new quarterback.

On the other side - oh, hell, do we have to? The defensive line spent more time backing up than a semi at WalMart, offering less resistance than their press clippings in a fall breeze. The linebackers did an admirable job of turning around quickly and pursuing, which leaves only the defensive backs. And, that's exactly what Robert Meachem did, time after time - leave the defensive backs. Nobody is going to enjoy reviewing films of the "tackling" displayed by Cal's corners - it's going to feel a lot like traffic school, reviewing bloody wreck after bloody wreck.

Tedford said just about the only thing available to him - "Syd'Quan Thompson is a great player. He was trying to make plays." Heroic for even being out there after having surgery on a cracked wrist, Thompson was left out on an island too often Saturday, and he tried to do what young players usually try to do, more than he was capable of, to turn the game around. Still, sins of commission are not bad. Forgiveness should be easier to get than permission - I'd rather see kids try to make plays than not.

Still, it's a world-renowned institution of higher learning (if you'd stayed tuned long enough to see the commercial, you'd know that, too), and at some point you'd think they would have understood the concept of "helmet on the numbers, guys, then wrap him up."

By the way, I got the number of that runaway truck - it was Monterio Hardesty.

What can we take away from this game? 18 unanswered points. Fulmer had to bring his starters back in after they had all taken a few hits off the Nitrous Oxide tank. The announcers, perhaps in an effort to keep you from tuning into SpongeBob SquarePants on another network - actually pointed out, when it was 35-0 with eight-and-a-half minutes left in the third quarter, that Cal had made it into a potentially competitive game at 35-11 with an entire quarter still at their disposal.

Oh, yes - we also learned that the most important stats sometimes lie like a dog. Cal won the time of possession battle, 30:12 to 29:48.

Stand firm, stand fast, Old Blues. These are, after all, kids playing a game. It's easy to cheer when they win and reflect glory onto those of us who no longer are interested in making the sacrifices that 6:30 a.m. practices entail. It's college, and these kids will become men while at Cal. Let's show them a little class and fill the place next weekend. Gophers can't hide under Field Turf, not even golden ones.

This is the first of occasional columns throughout the football season by Michael Duca, who regularly covers Cal basketball.
