A Tale of Two Halves

It was the first of halves, it was the second of halves, in every way imaginable - with apologies to Charles Dickens. Jeff Tedford's #21-ranked California Golden Bears played a solid first half of football against a game Portland State Vikings squad and turned them every way but loose, rolling to 42-16 victory in Strawberry Canyon on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

All the game's scoring was registered before the bands took to the field for halftime. The first team offenses on both sides performed well - with few exceptions, points were scored on most of the first-half drives that included five touchdowns by the Bears and a field goal and touchdown by Portland State.

There was a little something for every Cal fan in this victory - 502 yards of offense, 375 in the first half alone. A Daymeion Hughes interception returned for a touchdown. A good passing day by starting quarterback Nate Longshore (15 of 23 for 225 yards and 2 touchdowns). Perhaps best of all for the Golden Bears' future is that tailback Marshawn Lynch logged his 11th game of more than 100 yards (112 total) on only six carries, which meant that Marcus O'Keith and Bryan Schutte, along with starter Justin Forsett, were able to carry the load the rest of the way.

The second half was not nearly as much fun, but that's understandable given that the second and third string units played most of the second half (Cal's offensive line got one series in the second half).

"We were going to give the offensive line one series in the second half and then take them out, which we did," Tedford said in the post-game press conference. "We started substituting at the end of the second quarter with a lot of our defense. We substituted a lot in the second quarter. It's going to pay dividends down the road.

"To be able to get those guys (the second and third units) in (the game) in big-time situations is much different than practice. It's very important because as you go through a long season, there is going to be attrition. Guys are going to go down and we're going to have people step in. It's always nice when it's not their first time on the field.

Longshore put together a solid first half after an initial blooper. "They did a little something special for us, (on the first pass of the game, a third-and-eight situation) and we weren't expecting it," Longshore said. "Right as I threw it, I didn't even see that guy (free safety Michael Dorsey) over there. I was wondering where he had come from. It was a good play by them, but we adjusted to it right away."

The interception led to an Eric Azorr 24-yard field goal and a brief 3-0 lead for Portland State.

We say "brief" because Cal then put the next 35 points on the board.

The Vikings came in with a touted defensive line, and it lived up to its advance billing. "Early they were trying to blitz and plug all the gaps," Tedford said, "which left DeSean (Jackson) one on one. We never really could get the running game going consistently. We made some good plays, but too many times we got stopped behind the line of scrimmage. They were penetrating and we weren't getting the edges blocked so our backs didn't have any place to go and we got caught in the backfield a couple of times."

Portland State ended the game with eight tackles for losses, several in the second half.

One of those "good plays" that Tedford referred to was a quick hitter by Marshawn Lynch, who took a handoff and went off left tackle. He appeared to be stacked up at the line when Vikings defensive tackle CJ Nisulu tried to fly over the pile and arm-tackle Lynch.

As we've all learned by now, that doesn't often work, and this day was no exception.

Lynch took a half-step sideways, avoided the contact, bounced around left end, and left Vikings looking like they were trying to tackle running water as he sprinted 71 yards down the left sideline for the Bears' fourth touchdown, putting the game effectively out of reach at 28-3 with 12:47 remaining in the first half.

Lynch saw little duty after that play. "It was nice to get Marshawn out of the game early," Tedford said. "He's been hampered by that sprained ankle. He didn't practice on Thursday, and if you don't practice on Thursday you don't start the game."

Marcus O'Keith took over on kickoff returns and acquitted himself admirably, running back two for 56 total yards, one of then a 41 yard return that gave the Bears a short field for their first touchdown drive - right after Portland State's first quarter field goal.

While the Vikings' line did shoot the gaps to make appearances in the Bear offensive backfield, they also had to sell out on linebacker blitzes to try to control Cal's running game 0 which in turn left their defensive backs in man coverage most of the game. With Cal wide receiver speed - and ability to find the open lanes - Longshore picked that defense to shreds, often checking off to his second and third receivers to get the job done.

There was double good news at the tight end position. Craig Stevens started, having recovered from his first-game concussion. And, Cal's first touchdown was scored by redshirt freshman Cameron Morrah on an out pattern. Morrah's development into contributor this year - if it continues - would be a boon to the offense.

"Any playing time gives me confidence," Morrah said, "coming off a redshirt year it's just fun to play." The Claremont, California native is very soft-spoken and reluctant to talk about his play, even to the point of trying to convince the media he did not actually remember the play on which he scored his first collegiate career touchdown.

Fortunately, his quarterback remembered a little more. "He was wide open," Longshore said. "Cameron is a dual threat - he can run like a receiver, and he can block like a tight end. Basically, the touchdown was one of those plays where you fake a run at them, and you hope they suck down and commit to the run - and you try to get the ball behind them, and that's exactly what happened.

"He was not the first option on the play - usually you expect to hit the fullback in the flat right away, but the corner sunk down and covered the fullback, which left (Morrah) wide open in the back of the end zone. He's wonderful target, you can throw it anywhere."

Late in the first half, Longshore's squad was handed the ball at their own 28 after a Daymeion Hughes kickoff return. With 79 seconds at his disposal, Longshore lit up at the opportunity to run the two-minute drill against competition.

"I love that drill! I think we should do it every series," the quarterback gushed. "Obviously you have to pick your spots, but I feel we executed pretty well. That might be one of our strong points."

Asked why he loved it so much, Longshore said "it keeps pressure on the defense. We get to catch them off guard a little bit, put them under the pressure."

He was as good as his word, as he completed three of four passes on the drive for 72 yards and a touchdown - with 24 seconds to spare. "The next time we run that, I'm sure we will have confidence from this time."

"Our receivers - some of the double moves they did were outstanding. I think DeSean's defender fell down on the touchdown - I thought he was hiding on me again, but DeSean was wide open."

It was not all sunshine and roses. Portland State actually won the time of possession battle, 33:16 to 26:44, primarily because the Vikings held the ball for 19:30 of the last 30 minutes of play.

The Vikings were at an early offensive disadvantage when quarterback Sawyer Smith went down with a hip injury on their second possession in the first quarter. Smith, a fifth-year senior who had been effective in his prior six games (59.5% completions, 14 TDs vs. 2 interceptions) was 1 of 3 for 13 yards before being injured.

His replacement, freshman Tygue Howland, didn't fare much better. He suffered a sprained knee in the second quarter. Howland was 1 of 4 for 2 yards, and he was responsible for launching the pass that Hughes intercepted and ran back 30 yards for a touchdown.

Bear fans only have to remember back to last year's Big Game to remind themselves that third-string quarterbacks can be dangerous. Of course, in that game, Steve Levy had the advantage of being named the starter and getting the reps in practice. Still, Portland States' third quarterback Rob Freeman did a nice job, completing 12 of his 17 passes for 119 yards and one touchdown.

Wide receiver Tremayne Kirkland, who started three games at quarterback for the UNLV Runnin' Rebels before transferring, completed a 42-yard bomb on a gadget play, hooking up with wide receiver Brendan Ferrigno, who literally grew up on the Memorial Stadium field. Ferrigno's father is the Bears' wide receivers coach.

As at Tennessee, there were some disappointing penalties on the Golden Bears to go with their three turnovers. Tedford was not happy about it. "It's something we're definitely going to address this week. We had way too many turnovers and we're not going to tolerate it. There were poor decisions by a couple of guys. We're definitely going to address that."

It was a bad day for Smiths in general. Not only did the Vikings' starting QB Sawyer Smith leave the field on a cart, Bears' offensive right tackle Scott Smith suffered an injury to the medial collateral ligament in his knee. "Scott will have an MRI tomorrow and we'll see what the extent of that injury is," Tedford said post-game.

The Bears gave up a couple of other big plays to Portland State - tailback Telena Ho'okano popped free on a plunge up the middle from his own 24 and converted a third-and-three situation with a 31 yard burst through the linebackers and into the secondary.

On their subsequent possession, Cal's Justin Forsett was ruled to have fumbled, although it appeared in real-time (and more so in the replays) that his knee was down by contact before the ball came loose. Cal not only lost the ball, Coach Tedford lost the challenge of the play and a time out.

On first down, Freeman completed a 37-yard pass to fullback Bobby McClintock, who was guarded by Bernard Hicks. McClintock bulled straight up the field for several yards after the catch, carrying the ball to the Cal 10 and leading to the Vikings' final score.

While it may appear that the Bears were not as dominant as one might hope, fans should not read too much into the second half. Portland State kept their starters on the field, and Cal's second and third units got a good deal of very valuable playing time under game conditions.

And the first half, at 42-16, was really not as close as the score indicated. The Golden Bears were able to move the ball almost at will, and the ugly memories of all those dropped passes in Neyland Stadium were put to rest. Freshman tailback Bryan Schutte performed well in second-half action, carrying twice for 16 yards and catching three passes for 48 more.

Tedford decided at halftime to let Joe Ayoob play the third quarter, and fan favorite Steve Levy the fourth. As it turned out, Ayoob didn't get many opportunities, as the Golden Bears were only able to run 10 plays in the third quarter. Ayoob was 2 of 4 for 18 yards during his stint. Cal ran 14 fourth-quarter plays with Levy throwing 10 times and running twice.

Next week is the first "must" game of the year, until the next one, of course. Arizona State has a solid team with a young, but experienced, quarterback.

Cal will be challenged, because they may be starting two tackles on the offensive line who weren't at the top of the depth chart when the season began (the Two Mikes, Tepper and Gibson, possibly standing in for Cameron and Smith).

It will behoove the Golden Bears to get up early on the Sun Devils and plant seeds of doubt. After the way ASU coach Dirk Koetter handled his starting quarterback situation at the start of this season, the Sun Devils might not take well to getting behind early.
