Bears Avoid Upset in Big Game

BERKELEY - Saturday dawned bright, achingly clear and beautiful in the Bay Area, but it wasn't the sunrise, or the weather, that made Jeff Tedford's day, it was the sunset.

When the sun finally set behind the Golden Gate on the day of the first December game at Memorial Stadium since 1945, Cal had two things they coveted dearly and one they dared not wish for. The two covets: a shot at a second 10-win campaign in the Tedford era, and a record-tying fifth straight Big Game victory.

The one seemingly beyond hope? Their ever first Co-Championship of the Pac-10.

Cal's hard-fought 26-17 win over a game and gritty Stanford squad accomplished the first two. UCLA's stunning upset of USC, knocking the Trojans out of the National Championship game, also dropped them into a tie for the conference championship with the Golden Bears.

The last time Cal sat atop the league at the end of the season, it was called the Pac-8, and it was 1975. It was so long ago that nobody (we could find) on the current staff at Cal even knew if the players were supposed to receive rings for winning the conference.

And it happened minutes too late to get a reaction or comment from any players or members of the coaching staff, all of whom were already gone from Memorial Stadium, on their respective ways to well-earned celebrations of the giddy fact that not a single graduating senior at Leland Stanford Jr. University has ever touched The Axe.

The venerable Old Lady of Strawberry Canyon perhaps seemed to welcome December guests. The weather looked nice; however, it was anything but. Gale-force winds, howling out of the Sierras and down the slopes of Strawberry Canyon, altered Cal's game plan before the contest even began.

"We had a lot of downfield throws in the game plan for the first half," Tedford said in the post-game news conference, "but when we saw the conditions on the field we conferred and decided to go with our control plays instead." Cal also opted to play with the wind at their backs in the first and fourth quarters after winning the game-opening coin toss.

That strategy almost went for naught, as Stanford took the opening kickoff and, with one of the lowest-rated offenses in Division I-A, marched down the field, peeling many minutes off the clock - and converting a pair of key third down plays - before finally stalling at the Cal 25 with a 4th and 13. At that point, the wisdom of taking the wind became clear as Stanford coach Walt Harris chose to go for the first down rather than attempt a 42-yard field goal.

Cardinal quarterback T.C. Ostrander, who completed his first five pass attempts en route to a 15-of-31 day, was sacked for a 7-yard loss, the third time that occurred on the opening drive, and Cal took over on downs at their own 32.

The only problem: Stanford had chewed up almost eight-and-a-half minutes.

It took the Golden Bears only 2:18 to get to the Stanford 37, where on fourth down Tom Schneider drilled a line drive that the potent tailwinds carried through the uprights for a Cal record-tying 55 yard 3-pointer.

Schneider took his entry into the Cal record book in stride. "Memorial Stadium is a bit odd geographically, with the way the wind comes across the field. On days like this, you just have to pick a spot and stick with it."

Pick a spot he did, four times in the game, from 55, 23, 40, and 30 yards. His only miss, from 42 yards, came with the wind at his back, although it had tapered off a bit by the fourth quarter. It was still brisk at the 4:52 mark of the third, however, when his 35-yard kick was nullified by a Cal penalty. That didn't bother Schneider though, as he calmly lined up and banged it through from the 40 - into the wind.

After the first field goal put Cal on the board, the Cardinal were stopped again and punted into the shrieking gale for only 33 yards to the Bear 28. Cal had a minus-three and out (minus three yards), but Andrew Larson got the punt off before the teams changed ends. His kick set a new Big Game record, breaking Jackie Jensen's 1949 mark with a monstrous 72-yard kick that was downed at the Cardinal 3 yard line.

Cal had the ball for just 3:31 of the first period, tallying an anemic 28 yards on offense, but the winds of fortune had gifted them with the lead.

Then, as it turned out, it was just going to be that kind of day for the visitors from Palo Alto.

"In the first half, the wind was very, very strong. Even throwing with the wind, they were really sailing and taking off," Tedford said.

Stanford continued to work the clock in the second quarter, holding the ball for another 9:14 in that stanza to give them a whopping 11-minute edge in time of possession in the first half.

Possession is said to be nine-tenths of the law, but points on the board win football games, and Cal was proving slightly more adept at that aspect of the game.

The biggest play of the first half, and perhaps the biggest play of the game, came in the final minutes. After the teams had traded field goals, Cal was up 6-3 when Ostrander had trouble handling a center snap while rolling left. He first fumbled then appeared to recover when linebacker Zack Follett's shoestring tackle separated Ostrander from the football and left it lying on the turf near the feet of Syd'Quan Thompson.

"They fumbled the snap," Follett recounted, "any my eyes lit up. They picked it up and ran to the free side, so I jetted with everything I had and hit him hard. I saw Syd pick up the ball and lose his shoe. I just started going crazy."

Craziness soon became the norm for the vast majority of the sellout crowd of 72, 516, as Thompson did his best Wee Willie Winkie imitation, dashing through Stanford with "one shoe on and one shoe off" for 15 yards and the Bears' first touchdown.

The 13-3 score with 2:38 left in the first half looked like a back breaker for Stanford since the Bears would have the ball to start the third quarter.

The Bears may have been thinking that way, too. But then, for whatever the reason, they left almost the entire middle of the field uncovered on the ensuing kickoff. Senior kick returner Marcus McCutcheon saw the gaping hole and burst through it for a 68-yard return. Marcus Ezeff made the TD-saving tackle at the Bear 26.

With 2:32 at his disposal, Ostrander engineered a short 4-play drive capped by an 8-yard slant to freshman wideout Richard Sherman, and the Cardinal had their 12th touchdown of the year (in 12 games!), closing the gap to 13-10.

Inexplicably, Cal let the final 1:12 on the clock run out, stopping it only for a penalty (on Cal) and an out-of-bounds play. The half expired with Cal possessing three unused and useless timeouts. The most telling stat at the break: the Bears were 0-4 on third down plays, while Stanford was 4-8.

Whether it was a change in the weather, as Tedford said, or a realization that playing it close to the vest and letting Stanford have the ball 2/3 of the time was not working particularly well (the Cardinal ran 40 plays for 172 yards in the first half to Cal's 24 plays for 103 yards), Cal came out throwing the ball - and throwing it downfield - in the second half.

DeSean Jackson, a forgotten man in the first half with three catches for 37 yards, snared 4 more in the third quarter for 90 yards. And now, with his downfield focus, quarterback QB Nate Longshore saw Lavelle Hawkins getting open over the deep middle - as he had previously to no avail, and hit him for the final 32 yards of the drive for Cal's only TD on the day. This exclamation mark closed out an 11-play, 80-yard drive that consumed 3:34 of the clock.

With the score 20-10, it again looked like the Bears were ready to put some space between themselves and a game Stanford squad

Not so fast, said Ostrander.

"We came out with some wrinkles we were going to throw at them, and when we did, they worked. The way they played their coverage in the first half, if they played man (defense), we were going to try to take advantage of that, and I felt like we did."

They took advantage of it in the second half, too.

On a first down at their own 49, Ostrander made a nice play fake and then launched a bomb down the right sideline where wide receiver Evan Moore blatantly pushed off Bears defender Thomas DeCoud at the 10. Moore then made a one-handed circus catch and scored the answering TD with 6:57 left in the period.

The Bears weren't surprised. "A lot of people thought we were going to blow them out, but you have to give credit to Stanford," linebacker Mickey Pimentel said. "They made a lot of plays." DeSean Jackson chimed in, "I knew it was going to be a fight to the end, and I thought they'd come out tough because it's their last game."

But, while Stanford did not give up at any point in the game, the Bear defense finally said "enough" at this point in the contest. After an 8-play, 57-yard drive that culminated in Schneider's 40-yard three pointer to give the Bears a 23-17 lead, Stanford's final five possessions looked like this:

  • 3 plays, minus one yard, 1:18 time of possession
  • 3 plays, four yards, 1:13 TOP
  • 4 plays, two yards, 1:18 TOP
  • 3 plays, minus 4 yards, 2:12 TOP
  • 5 plays, 11 yards, 0:58 TOP

It was a little more interesting than this looks, though, because while trying to mount a drive from deep in their own territory at the start of the fourth quarter, Marshawn Lynch ran a draw play - but left the ball on the ground at the end. Even though it appeared from replays that his knee was down when the ball came out, the fumble recovery awarded to Stanford on the field was allowed to stand.

It was their golden opportunity - this was what the Cardinal had practiced for and dreamt of for the past two weeks. They had a 1st and 10 at the Bears 14 yard line, in sniffing distance of the go-ahead touchdown late in the game.

"I thought we played well enough to win," said Coach Harris, "and we gave ourselves a chance to win." Evan Moore said, "It's not a secret that we had nothing to play for. We were 1-10 and could have come out and said, 'Forget it,' but we've got a lot of pride and played real hard today."

There was pride at stake across the line, too. Pride, and the Axe.

Ostrander's first play was a play action pass. Under pressure, he threw it toward Moore, but out of bounds.

2nd and 10 from the 14: Ostrander handed the ball to tailback Anthony Kimble on a delay. Kimble went over left tackle, but Zack Follett and Steve Kelly met him just past the line of scrimmage.

3rd and 8 from the 12: Cal faked a blitz, but dropped into 4-deep coverage. Ostrander threw to tight end Jim Dray down the middle, but 4 Bears surrounded him and he could not reach the pass that was both over his head and a bit behind him.

4th and 8 from the 12 with just 12 minutes and 20 seconds left in their season: What could Stanford possibly have to lose by going for it? Their field goal kicker, junior Aaron Zagory, had hit on only 8 of 12 attempts all season. A touchdown would have swung momentum squarely in favor of the Cardinal - while a field goal would just close the gap to minus-three. And Stanford's offense was not being particularly productive.

Nevertheless Coach Walt Harris took the safe route and sent in Zagory. With the wind having died down to a dull roar by this point in the game, Zagory lined up on the left hash mark at the 19-yard line for a 29-yard attempt.

Stanford, it seems, could not count to 11, and finding themselves a man short the Cardinal had to use their second time out of the half. In effect, they iced their own kicker.

The snap was a little high, but not enough to bother most kickers. The ball sailed several yards left, not even close.

At that point Justin Forsett took the game into his own hands. From their own 20, the Bears used 5 Forsett runs, good for 35 yards, and a 20 yard completion to Hawkins to move into field goal range themselves, but this drive ended in Schneider's only miss of the day, wide left from 42 yards out.

The Bear defense pushed Stanford backward four yards, and their punt into the wind was very short, with Cal taking over at its own 45 inside six minutes.

Again, it was Forsett. 5 carries for 32 yards gobbled enough territory and time (the 8-play drive drained 4:57 off the clock) for Schneider to convert a 30-yard chip shot and put the game away at 26-17.

The game should have been over then, but Stanford kept after it, and made a first down. On the game's final play, Ostrander rolled right, gained a few yards, then lateralled to Kimble at the 27.

Kimble gained a few yards, then thought it was perhaps Stanford's turn to run The Play, so he lateralled at the Stanford 40 - to nobody. Robert Peele picked up the ball at the 35 after several players failed to do so and danced his way down the sidelines to the Stanford 15 before Marcus McCutcheon finally put an end to the game with an ankle tackle.

After which, just as they had done for Tedford's first Big Game win that broke a 7-game streak in Stanford's favor, Bear fans rushed the field, swarming about the team and the Axe. So many were on the field that Senior Mickey Pimentel said post-game, "I still haven't touched the Axe."

Relax, Mickey. You've got from now until June's graduation ceremonies to caress the talisman. You might want to spend the next 4 weeks preparing for Texas A & M in the Holiday Bowl, though. Cal owes an old-fashioned country whuppin' to the state of Texas, after the Longhorns deprived them of a BCS appearance two years ago, and then Texas Tech shocked them in this same Holiday Bowl.

With any luck, this year it will be Cal fans telling Aggie jokes on New Year's Eve.
