Cal Men's Basketball: 2006-07

Bear Insider Staff Writer Dan Lachman recently interviewed Cal Men's Basketball Head Coach Ben Braun, and took the opportunity to engage in a candid conversation about the the team's accomplishments and struggles in the 2006-07 season. Incorporating insights from that interview, this article is Dan's review of the season.

When the final buzzer sounded at the Staples Center on March 9, 2007 the Oregon Ducks celebrated their 81-63 victory over the California Golden Bears in the Pac-10 Tournament semi-finals. Cal's season was over.

The Bears finished up 16-17 overall, and missed the post-season. However, there were more than a few memorable moments during the campaign, and many reasons for optimism in looking forward to next season. Just the day before the season-ending loss, Cal had stunned regular season champion (and final four bound) UCLA in a thrilling overtime contest, 76-69. They won the Great Alaska Shootout, broke a 13 game losing streak at Maples Pavilion with a 67-63 win, and won four games in overtime. Cal defeated eventual Elite 8 participant Oregon 63-61 at Haas Pavilion in February, and pounded Kansas State by 30 in late November. The season was a very bumpy ride.

The primary reason for the up and down nature of the season was an avalanche of injuries that began with Nikola Knezevic's right knee injury during summer open gym. Jordan Wilkes tore the patella tendon in his left knee at practice just before the start of the season and had season-ending surgery. Center DeVon Hardin broke his left foot against Furman at Haas in December and was out for the rest of the year.

Patrick Christopher suffered with a groin injury, Theo Robertson had knee tendonitis, and Ayinde Ubaka struggled with a debilitating virus that sapped his strength. Eric Vierneisel missed two games with a sprained ankle. Finally, Taylor Harrison tore cartilage in his knee during the Oregon game at Staples. Cal went through most of the season with just 9 scholarship players.

Hardin's injury totally changed the Bears' season. It forced a move of brilliant freshman Ryan Anderson to the five spot, and also switched Robertson from the three to an undersized four man. Overnight, Cal became grossly undersized. This weakness compromised the team's defensive performance throughout the season. It is nearly impossible to defend without an inside presence, and Cal struggled on the defensive end for much of the conference season. In Pac-10 games, their opponents shot 50% from the floor, and there was an ugly run of seven straight games of opponents shooting over 50%.

Normally, a season can be divided into three parts: non-conference, conference and post-season. Cal's season could be divided into pre- and post-Hardin's injury. Even with Hardin, the Bears showed signs of the inconsistency that would plague them. They won in Alaska, but they also lost the Golden Bear Classic final to San Diego. They beat Kansas State, but lost at San Diego State as the Aztecs shot 61% from the floor. They battled back from an 18-point deficit against an excellent Nevada team in San Jose, but fell short by 77-71.

Once Hardin went down, Cal didn't have much time to adjust. They traveled to Chicago to play DePaul in December 23. Ryan Anderson played a great first half with 17 points and 11 rebounds and Cal led 36-33. The Bears ran out of gas in the second half and lost 90-62.

Despite being shorthanded, Cal won four of their first six conference games, including the memorable win at Maples. After winning at Oregon State, the defensive woes began to become insurmountable. Cal lost six consecutive games, finally ending the skid with an exciting home win over Oregon.

They beat Oregon State in overtime to make it two wins in a row, but lost at UCLA and USC. In the game at Pauley, they got off to a great start and were down by one point at the half, but their defense broke down in the second half. The Bruins took the ball to the basket, and the Bears didn't have an answer. Home losses to the Arizona schools extended the losing streak to four. They battled hard against Arizona, but fell short by five. Then, their shooting went south against ASU's zone in a disappointing loss.

The Pac-10 tournament was a new start. Cal beat Oregon State for the third time in the opening round, with a brilliant 34-2 run in the first half. Then came the dramatic overtime win against the Bruins, with Ubaka having a career game with 29 points.

Ben Braun tells us that the won-loss record is not the only way to evaluate a season: "You try to maximize the potential of what your team can do under the conditions with which you play."

This team was dealt a very tough hand. The injuries totally disrupted the plans, especially on defense. The lack of an inside presence was devastating. As Braun said, "When we did try to lock down the interior we ended up giving teams outside looks. So it was a tough way to go."

Lack of depth meant that players also had to work to avoid fouls, and it's difficult to defend when you're afraid to foul. On top of that, the lack of depth led to fatigue. Finally, the inexperience of the freshman contributed to defensive breakdowns.

Stopping dribble penetration was an ongoing problem. As Braun put it, "We struggled with containment. You want to depend on your help against penetration, but you can't depend on it every possession. That's the biggest challenge in basketball, to contain the ball handler. People today are too good with the ball; they can get by you one on one. We know we've got to be better defensively."

Because of the defensive breakdowns and rebounding difficulties, Cal could not consistently maintain their transition game. It's hard to run when you're not getting stops and you're struggling to rebound. Again, the lack of size was a major impediment.

Despite the semi-automatic griping from some sectors, the offense was in fact much improved. This team generally shot the ball well, and was ranked among the national leaders in free throw percentage. Unfortunately, they didn't get to the line enough due to the perimeter nature of their attack.

The high-ball screen was a staple of the offense, and Ryan Anderson excelled at the pick and pop. There was also more diversity. For example, Cal spread out UCLA in the Pac-10 tournament and ran effective back screens to exploit the Bruins' aggressive defense.

This team had no margin for error. To be successful, they had to maintain a high level for 40 minutes. In several games, they played one great half, but couldn't sustain it throughout the game.

Braun said, "We never looked at the end of the UCLA game, we were looking at keeping competitive throughout that game, playing every possession to the best of our ability. That's why we had success. And we had to play a near-perfect game to beat them. It's daunting sometimes to say if we don't do everything right we could lose."

Surprisingly, the Bears struggled at times on their home floor. They were hammered by Washington State and Stanford, and had a ghastly shooting game against Arizona State on Senior Day, going down 42-41. They got off to a great start at home against UCLA, but Anderson picked up two early fouls, went to the bench and the Bears struggled to score the rest of the way in a 62-46 loss.

The coaches are optimistic about next year. Job one will be to avoid the injury bug. Braun and his staff are committed to do what they can to address the problem.

Said Bruan, "There are certain things you can't control. You can't control injuries for the most part. Are there other things you can do? What about the fatigue factor, what about nutrition and diet, what about the mechanics of your shoe, what about your workout schedule, what about the floor you play on. Those are all areas that you don't leave unturned, and you examine those things because we've had more than our share (of injuries)." On the diet question, Braun believes that many players today have a calcium deficiency, and that's an area they are going to look at.

Braun bases his optimism on the depth he expects to have next season. The Bears will have size and bodies in the frontcourt. They are excited about newcomers Harper Kamp and Omondi Amoke, and the transfer from Duke, Jamal Boykin.

The return of an inside presence will definitely help defensively. They should have an excellent shooting team, and they need to get to the free-throw line with greater frequency. The coach believes his team will be strong in transition. Team depth will also result in more competitive practices. For example, Braun believes that Taylor Harrison would have progressed more rapidly had he been able to practice against Hardin and Jordan Wilkes all season.

Jerome Randle and Nikola Knezevic will inherit the point guard position. Randle is capable of scoring the ball, but his performance against UCLA at Staples will help convince him that he doesn't need to score to be effective. Braun called Knezevic a "pass-first player," and suggested that the two could play together at times.

Ryan Anderson had a sensational first year in college basketball, and his coach believes he will continue to improve. Anderson needs to work on finishing inside, going to his left, scoring off the bounce, and improving his overall strength. There's no question that Anderson has a tremendous upside.

Cal will need to find new leadership with the departure of seniors Ayinde Ubaka and Alex Pribble. The leading candidates are Robertson, Vierneisel, Omar Wilkes, and Jamal Boykin. Boykin's enthusiasm on the bench was a noticeable addition to the team chemistry. Braun cited the relationships among the players and coaches before the season started, and the chemistry was maintained throughout the season.

Braun feels that the coaching staff did some of its best work this season. He said, "I thought our coaching staff worked extremely hard to keep our players competitive. We never made any excuses, we never accepted less, we never demanded less. We expected to win every game we played. We have a competitive coaching staff that's not giving in to adversity. Our team was a reflection of that competitiveness."

The coach is clear about his goals for next year. He stated, "Our goal is to get back to a position where we challenge for a championship and to get back to the NCAA tournament. I think we could have achieved that this year with a few breaks along the way, and we didn't get many breaks. Our team gave a lot of effort in trying to get there. We're really optimistic about next year."

Cal fans should share that optimism. The return of the injured players, the experience gained by the freshman, and the talents of the newcomers bode well for next year. The 2006-07 Bears showed a great deal of heart and competitiveness. Despite the adversity, they battled throughout the season.

Cal could well return to the 20 victory level and be back in the NCAA Tournament next March.

As Braun said, "It makes you realize, having been to the tournament last year, that every year your goal is to fight and to claw and to maximize your potential. When you get there it's a great feeling, when you fall short you have this empty feeling."

This writer does not think the Cal Bears will have that empty feeling next year.
