Comments from Bay Area Media Day

It was Bay Area College Football Media Day in San Francisco on Wednesday, where local reporters had the chance to meet with coaches and players. The Bear Insider was well-represented, and in this story, you'll hear comments from Cal head coach Jeff Tedford, linebacker Zack Follett, and running back Justin Forsett. Watch for forthcoming stories on Thomas DeCoud and a very special guest.

It was a festive Bay Area Media Day at Tres Agaves in San Francisco on Wednesday as various Bay Area writers had the chance to meet with the head coaches of Cal, Stanford, and San Jose State along with three players from each team.  Each coach made general comments, before writers had the chance to meet with the coaches and players for one-on-one interviews.  Along with Jeff Tedford, Cal brought junior linebacker Zack Follett, senior safety Thomas DeCoud, and senior tailback Justin Forsett.

In his general comments, Tedford talked about how much he looks forward to this time of the year and gave a quick summary about this year's team.

"This is the best time of the year for me," said Tedford, whose 43 wins at Cal is the most by a Golden Bear head coach since Pappy Waldorf won 67 games while coaching from 1947 to 1956. "On Sunday, I look forward to when we convene, and I'm looking forward to a big year.  This is the first time that we've had a quarterback come back after starting every game."

"We're excited about our receiving corps, Justin (Forsett) brings experience, and our offensive line is solid with our returning All-Conference center, Alex Mack.  On defense, we've lost guys up front, but we had an exciting spring, and our linebacker corps are all back except for Desmond Bishop.  We've got our safeties back in Thomas DeCoud and Bernard Hicks, Syd'Quan Thompson will hold down one of the corners, and we'll have a competition for the other starting cornerback position.  We've got our punter and kicker back as well, and we feel that [this year's team] has great leadership and great chemistry."

Afterwards, the Bear Insider caught up with Tedford to get his thoughts on a few matters.

While Jim Michalczik was named offensive coordinator in the off-season to replace Mike Dunbar, don't expect many changes from last season, other than Tedford calling the plays.

"There's not going to be a change this year from last year," said Tedford, whose 28 win total over the past three seasons has been surpassed just once in Cal history. "People kept saying we were a spread team last year, but we really weren't. We got in the shotgun a little more and we'll continue to use the shotgun, but we're not going to change offensively. We'll still use multiple formations and we'll have different personnel groups to go with those formations."

While Bear fans may bemoan the loss of Marshawn Lynch's once-in-a-blue-moon talent, Justin Forsett has earned the confidence of the coaching staff with his work.

"There's no drop-off with Justin," said Tedford. "He complemented Marshawn well last year, and Marshawn was a great football player."

Linebacker Desmond Bishop has some of his best games as a Bear towards the end of last season, and Tedford's confident that a leader will arise from the current group.

"Zack Follett, Worrell Williams, Anthony Felder, Greg Van Hoesen, Justin Moye, all of those guys are leaders and good players."

Throughout the media session, Tedford sat patiently at a table answering more-or-less the same sets of questions multiple times. However interest in talking to him was such that even after Stanford's Jim Harbaugh and San Jose State's Dick Tomey had finished their duties, assorted reporters were still waiting to ask him questions.   Trying to find an original question to ask was turning out to be difficult, especially nearly two hours into the session.

He was then asked about his thoughts on the NCAA's new text messaging ban.   Based on a 13-3 vote of the NCAA Division I Board of Directors, coaches are no longer allowed to text message prospective recruits.  Prospective recruits can text message coaches, but coaches are not allowed to reply.  Yet coaches are allowed to e-mail prospects, although if a flurry of e-mails started coming from a coach's phone, that could possibly open up a whole different can of worms.

"There needs to be a middle ground," said Tedford, who said he didn't send text messages every day, and might send as many as 15 on a given day. "Text messaging is a good tool, but we need to look into cutting it back because kids need to be given a break. It's something that can be continual and can go on all day and all night."

"Right now I've got about 70 names in here," said Tedford who pulled out his Blackberry to show how many prospective student-athletes he's been in contact with. "I'll send text messages, but it's not always you, as the coach who initiates the contact.  Sometimes they'll text message me, and now I can't text them back."

While linebacker Zack Follett's long played with the eye of the tiger, this year's he's got the hair to match. A snazzy tiger-striped-on-blond look made him the easiest player to find.  Follett had a terrific sophomore season in 2006, earning honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors with 62 tackles, four forced fumbles and tied for the team-lead with 5.5 sacks.

Like many of his teammates, Follett's eager to start the season and get another crack at Tennessee.

"I'm really hungry to get out there for that first game," said Follett, who acknowledged that last year's season-opening 35-18 defeat to the Volunteers wasn't an easy game to shake off. "That first game last year was a drag on the whole season, and we've had the whole summer to reflect on it and let it motivate us.  That was a depressing flight home.   We worked out all summer to get ready for that game only to lose like that. But it's given us motivation. We've got two big games at home this year, against USC and Tennessee, but we can't look past those games."

However, he's also well aware that the what separates the very good teams from the great teams is the ability to put together strong efforts week-after-week.

"The Pac-10's rough. There are no easy games," said Follett, who as a hobby, cuts plywood into life-sized replicas of teammates. "If we keep our focus, we can pull off eight straight like we did last year."

Although this year's linebacker corps will be without all-Pac-10 first-teamer Desmond Bishop and Mickey Pimentel, most of the returning linebackers have seen considerable playing time during the past two years.

"The linebacking unit will be solid this year," said the Clovis native. "We'll all perform. Our linebacker coach, Kenwick Thompson is really riding us, and he's pushing us as hard as we've ever had a linebacker coach push us."

While Thompson is having them work on more specific skills, like playing at pad level, his coaching is rounding out a coaching three-step that the linebackers have had recently.

"I've had three coaches since I've been here," said Follett, who put up impressive numbers despite not starting until the Stanford game last season. "Justin Wilcox taught us to think in terms of the entire defense. Bob Foster, who's the Godfather taught us a lot about watching film, and coach Thompson showed us a lot about the specific techniques that we need to succeed at our position.  Getting used to a new coach took some time, and we had to change our style a little, but in the long run it's for the better. This year we'll get to use what he's given us and it's going to help us overall, for the season."

Not surprisingly, Follett enjoys rushing the quarterback, but he's far from satisfied with last year's performance.

"If I was any good last year, I would have had 12 sacks, but instead I had five," said Follett, who'll be shifted around playing outside and inside linebacker this year. "There's a lot more I have to bring this year.  Every time somebody blocked me, it's because I wasn't there off the edge fast enough.  I don't think we pressured opposing quarterbacks enough last year."

Follett offered a few quick observations about his fellow linebackers:

Greg Van Hoesen: "He's the meathead of the group. He's always going hard. He's our 300 gladiator."

Worrell Williams: "He's a hard-hitter and has a very smooth game."

Anthony Felder: "He's the quiet one."

Justin Moye: "He probably knows the defense better than anyone."

After three years of playing the understudy, Justin Forsett will now get to play a leading role as Cal's tailback.  The Bears have had five straight seasons with 1,000 yard rushers - Joe Igber, Adminchinobe Echemandu, J.J. Arrington, Marshawn Lynch (twice), and Forsett hopes to make it a sixth.  He's embracing the role of not just being the starter, but the role of elder statesman among the running backs.

"There's more responsibility this year," said Forsett, who comes into the season with 1,674 yards and a 6.4 yard-per-carry average. "I have to be more vocal than usual, but I'm more of a lead-by-example type, and do what I can to help the young guys learn the ropes and bring guys along."

What makes that role easier is that under coach Ron Gould, the running backs have always been a close-knit unit.

"We're all a family," said Forsett, who gained 10 pounds in the offseason and hopes to play this season at 195. "We're not afraid to help each other out, and it's helped make for an easy transition for me to be a starter.  They all know me and they know that I'm going to do whatever I can to help them out."

Forsett understands that to have a productive season and to thrive under the increased workload he'll get, he needed to put in a considerable amount of work in the offseason.

"I worked on my speed, improving my open-field running, and my leg power," said the interdisciplinary studies major. "I want to be able to move the pile, and I needed to work on my leg strength so that I could run with more power."

While the Bears repeatedly used Forsett in short-yardage and goal-line situations last season, there was a reason.

"I've been blessed with the ability to hit the hole fast, " said Forsett, who's run for 11 touchdowns in his Cal career. "Down by the end zone, holes open up quick and they close quick, and because I'm a little guy I have to used that to my advantage. A bigger back might not squeeze through the hole as easily."

Through the spring and informal summer workouts, Forsett was willing to share his thoughts on some of the running backs:

James Montgomery: "He's a smart guy.  We call him "Governor" because he's so distinguished. He's strong, he's fast and he's a quick learner."

Tracy Slocum: "He's got power and runs with explosiveness.  He's a physical specimen, he's pretty much cut everywhere. He's a great blocker and a great runner."

Bryan Schutte: "He's got a little bit of everything. He's smart on and off the field. He's got fast feet and he's one of our fastest guys."

Jahvid Best:  "Speed. He's fast, like a blur. Nobody's raced yet, but when we're doing our running in drills, he's definitely out front."

Shane Vereen: "He's got a great natural ability to do things. He's cut everywhere, six-pack abs, biceps, triceps, everywhere."

If he had to venture a guess, he'd guess that either Best or Vereen will see the field this fall.

"Speed's a gift and you'd think that one of them would be on the field this fall," said Forsett. "But anything can happen. During my freshman year, both Marshawn and I ended up playing.  The best players will end up playing."

For a running back who was once headed for Notre Dame but ended up at Berkeley almost by accident, it's worked out well for the Texas native.

"It's been great," said Forsett about his Berkeley experience. "It's a different place, but I love it here and I wouldn't have traded my time here for the world."

Trying to get Forsett to spell out individual goals is darn near impossible. Team goals, that's considerably easier.

"I want us to go all the way and go undefeated," said Forsett. "We want to take every game, starting with September 1st against Tennessee.   We've got great players coming back and we want to win each game until we get to the national championship game."

While another writer will address Jim Harbaugh in greater detail, he did offer up these two general comments that you can nosh on:

"We can't wait to get started. We'll start on Sunday and we'll practice on Monday. We're banking on our seniors, they've been there before and we're counting on their leadership.

"Cornerback Nick Sanchez will be our key to success on the defensive side of the ball. We expect the cornerback to shut down to shut down the wide receivers so we can put eight men in the box."
