Too Close For Comfort in Fort Collins

After achieving what Cal Bear Head Coach Jeff Tedford termed "redemption" last week in their nationally televised win over Tennessee, the Bears also had some unfinished business of the redemptive nature against Colorado State, after the Rams handed Cal an upset defeat in Berkeley in 2003 in their last meeting.

The game started inauspiciously for the Bears, with Colorado State kicker Jason Smith booming the opening kick well into the end zone for a touchback, despite the new rule setting the kickoff at the 30 yard line.

The Bears went three and out with a surprising three straight passes to open the game as the Rams coverage held tight and took away the deeper routes.

The Bears countered, forcing a 3 and out on the Rams, with two players receiving their initial starts for Cal with Cody Jones replacing Mika Kane at defensive tackle (out with a concussion) and Marcus Ezeff replacing Bernard Hicks at rover (minor injuries from Tennessee game).

Colorado State struck first, with tailback Kyle Bell taking a carry 8 yards off tackle for the touchdown after the Rams marched 74 yards down field in 9 plays to start the scoring. To the delight of the Colorado State fans, the Rams drove surprisingly easily down the field, taking the edge off the momentum of last week's opening game win for the Bears.

On the ensuing drive, the Bears struck quickly, with Mark Gibson throwing a key block on the first play of the drive, as Jackson took his second reverse of the game all the way to the house, with an electric 73 yard jaunt to even up the scoring, proving once again, if you put the ball in Jackson's hands, more often than not he'll make something happen.

The Rams threatened to strike back quickly, with a 43 yard end around by WR Damon Morton, starting a Ram march right back down the field. After a few more plays drove the ball down the Cal 2 yard line, the defense struck, as linebacker Zack Follett pressured Ram QB Caleb Hanie with a hard shot that forced a floating pass that redshirt frosh Derrick Hill picked off and ran back to the Bear 4 yard line. Hill was seeing his first action on the season after missing most of camp with an injured back. His presence was especially important with starter Kane out with injury.

The Bears drive stalled as the quarter ended as a Bear 1st down completion to Hawkins at the Cal 25 was overturned on review as the Bears were forced to punt, the first of many breaks and mistakes that hampered the Bears on the day.

After the Bears stopped the next drive, 2006 All-MWC Ram punter Jimmie Kaylor came down with an acute case of Jackson-itus, shanking a 25 yard punt to midfield where Cal took over.

The Bears capitalized quickly, as Longshore hit Hawkins in stride with a perfectly-timed slant to the Ram 31. Hawkins' grab was topped by TE Cameron Morrah, leaping high for a catch at the Rams 2. Cal tailback Justin Forsett put the Bears in the lead with a dive up the middle as the Bears surged ahead 14-7 after a Jordan Kay extra point.

Potential disaster occurred for CSU as big tight Kory Sperry went down with what appeared to be a serious knee injury, with a big shot by Ezeff. The 6-6/260 Sperry is a key component of the Ram offense and Sperry's loss would not portend well for the underdogs.

Sperry never returned and the Rams offense seemed to pay the price later in the game. Sperry severely injured his ACL on the play and is likely lost for the season. Since he's a true senior, Sperry will likely be granted an opportunity to come back next year and resume his career for the Rams.

Sperry's loss didn't deter the Rams at the moment, however, as CSU drove down to the Cal 1 yard line. With 3rd and 1, another controversial call went against the Bears, as QB Hanie appeared to be stopped cold on a keeper, only to get a questionable touchdown call. Replays appeared to clearly show the pile short of the goal line, as the Rams knotted the score at 14 all.

After a return to the Ram 30 by freshman tailback Jahvid Best, the Bears quickly bounced back, as Longshore hit Hawkins 25 yards down field, with enough protection to take a smoking break as he waited for the play to develop.

The Rams recovered on the next play, handing Longshore his first sack of the season on a blitz.

As the drive stalled at the Ram 29, Kay received his first tough test of the year, with a 47 yard field goal attempt. Kay stayed perfect on the year, staking the Bears to a 3 point lead as the clock wound down on the quarter.

The Bears had to be surprised with CSU's ability to drive the ball down field in the first half. The Bear defense, while making some good plays, including a sack by Felder to go along with an amazing 9 first half tackles, often played fairly soft pass defense not to mention the success the Rams had running the ball, with 133 yards on the ground. Ram quarterback Hanie was sharp, going 9 for 11, despite two sacks.

The Bears D started strong in the 2nd half, with DE Tyson Alualu powering to an 11 yard sack, his second on the day, after sharing an earlier sack with true frosh Cameron Jordan as the Rams went 3 and out and punted.

DeSean Jackson had just his second opportunity of the season to field a punt as he returned the Kaylor punt for 15 yards to midfield.

The Bears were able to capitalize and put some more points on the board in the ensuing drive.

The Bears drive was punctuated by nice catch and runs by Best and Hawkins before the drive stalled at the Ram 24 where Kay hit yet another field goal, drilling a 41 yarder, moving the Bears' lead to 20-14.

On the next drive, the Cal defense stayed strong, with Alualu garning his 3rd sack on the day (2 overall, including shared sacks), teaming with DT Matt Malele on the play.

An ugly series of miscues cost the Bears a touchdown on the ensuing drive as Jackson recovered a muffed punt on the Ram 43, only to see the Bears fail to capitalize as Jackson lost a first down, fumbling trying to break a tackle. Hawkins also lost a beautiful td, as his 37 td yard catch from Cal quarterback Nate Longshore was called back on a critical holding penalty, forcing a Cal punt.

For the third straight drive, the Bears forced a 3 and out as their defense held strong.

After stalling on a drive of their own then surrendering their first 1st down of the half with a minute left in the 3rd quarter, Felder struck again, smashing Hanie with a blindside sack, forcing a fumble that was recovered by DE Tad Smith at the Ram 39.

More miscues derailed the Bears in the next series, as the drive stalled with another crucial penalty as an 18 yard run was wiped off the board with an illegal block by TE Craig Stevens, taking the Bears out of field goal range as well -yet again squandering excellent field position as the quarter ended with the Bears clinging to a 20-14 lead.

The Bear defense stepped up again as linebacker Justin Moye stepped in to pick off a Hanie pass, taking the ball to the Ram 27 with a nice return on the next series. However, another miscue brought the ball back 15 yards on the Moye return, as the Bears were called for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The Bears went on the move again after the setback, with a touchdown drive that included two big runs by redshirt frosh tailback James Montgomery, including his first career td as Cal got back on track with a touchdown at the 4:40 mark in the 4th quarter, extending the lead to 13. Montgomery finished the day with 43 yards on 9 carries, including the td.

After stopping a CSU drive at the 32 with a huge hit by lb Zack Follett on a 3rd down breakup, the Bears took over on downs as the Rams failed on the 4th down conversion.

Lightening, otherwise known as super frosh Jahvid Best struck quickly, with Best taking the second play of the drive 64 yards, with the first of what will undoubtedly be many more touchdowns for the Bears, weaving his way downfield before breaking free and sprinting to the end zone.

With a 34-14 lead and only 5 minutes to play, the Bears appeared to have the game well under control. After the Rames were forced to burn critical time, moving the ball just 17 yards in six plays, a little CSU lightening of its own struck with Ram receiver Damon Morton breaking free and catching a long 66 yard td down the left sideline over redshirt frosh Darian Hagan, who was getting an opportunity to play in a game that had only minutes ago appeared to be safely in hand.

After recovering an onsides kick at Cal 48, Hanie struck again, hitting Ram receiver George Hill on another deep pass, this time over Marcus Ezeff, bringing the ball down to the Cal 4. Bell was able to punch it in on 2nd down as the Bears saw a big victory potentially slipping away.

With Bears fan's hearts on their throats, Smith attempted another onsides kick with just 2:54 left. This time, the Rams luck ran out, as the ball skipped high out of bounds as the Bears took over at their 35.

Controlling the ball with 5 straight runs by Montgomery, including a crucial 12 yard rush for a 1st down, the Bears closed things out as the Rams ran out of timeouts and Longshore took a knee as the final seconds ticked off.

The 34-28 win was a hard-fought struggle that will surely be a wakeup call to the Bears as they progress through their schedule.

It was the second straight tough close loss for Colorado State, as they fell in overtime to rival Colorado last week in Boulder.

"I think Cal is a good football team and we played three quarters neck and neck with them," said CSU Head Coach Sonny Lubick. "We've got to get over the hump of losing next week."

As frustrating as the CSU loss was for Lubick, the closer-than-expected Bear victory didn't sit particularly better with Jeff Tedford.

"We had penalties, dropped passes and a touchdown called back," said Tedford. We continued to shoot ourselves in the foot and there are a lot of lessons to be learned (from this game)."

While it could be debated that what ended as a close loss will hurt the team, both in national respect and possibly in the polls, it will also force the team and staff to redouble their efforts and cut down on the kind of errors that would likely earn them a defeat in future games against tougher opponents.

"It's a great lesson for us to know that the game's never over," said Tedford. "We didn't play well throughout the game. We took turns. Defensively, we didn't tackle well in the first half and they marched on us and controlled the clock.

"In the second half, the defense stepped up and got them off the field and the offense had good field position but we shot ourselves in the foot with penalties and other mistakes.

"We made a couple big plays and took a good lead, even though we didn't play very well as a whole. Then we put some backup guys in and let them catch up.

"It's just a lesson that you have to practice hard every day because you never know when you're going to get your opportunity.

"But it's never over till the end. Give Colorado State a lot of credit. They played hard and you have to tip your hat to them," concluded Tedford.
