Bears Win Ugly, But Win

If revenge is a dish best served cold, then the Cal Golden Bears coaching staff need to upgrade their refrigerators.

At the end of one quarter, fans at other Pac-10 venues must have shuddered to see the score from Strawberry Canyon - 28-3 in favor of Cal.

You could take the position it was all downhill after the end of the first quarter. The Arizona Wildcats won the last three quarters of the game, 24-17.

But, oh, what a start it was.

The Wildcats didn't want to punt to DeSean Jackson, so they shanked punts out of bounds all day. The first one gave the Golden Bears a golden opportunity at midfield on their second possession, with 12:33 left in the first period.

A play action pass to Lavelle Hawkins from Nate Longshore resulted in a 27-yard gain. After an incomplete to Jackson at the left sideline, Justin Forsett broke a series of tackles on a 14-yard scamper to the Arizona 9.

On first down, Longshore lined up as the left flanker, Forsett took the direct snap and slipped outside the right end and walked into the end zone for a 7-0 lead. The 50-yard drive took four plays and just 47 seconds.

After Arizona answered with a 31-yard field goal from Jason Bondzio, Cal started on its own 23. Longshore made a nice play-action fake to Forsett to freeze the outside linebacker, and tight end Cameron Morrah got totally free over the middle on a crossing pattern. Longshore hit him in stride and Morrah rumbled 49 yards for the longest play of his Bears career.

An incomplete pass to Forsett set up 2ND and 10 at the Arizona 28, and Longshore's one-step drop and quick flanker screen to Jackson on the left side got a first down at the 18.

From there, with Jahvid Best replacing Jackson at wideout, Longshore pump-faked a short pass, then hit a wide-open Hawkins in the back of the end zone for the score. The drive, 77 yards this time, again took just four plays, and even less time, only 34 seconds.

After a three-and-out for the Wildcats, Arizona punted out of bounds to their own 47, presenting Longshore with another short field again. He used it more patiently this time, consuming 4:01 to go 47 yards on 11 plays. On third-and-goal from the 1, he pitched out to Jahvid Best who bolted around the left side running yards from the nearest defender; it looked almost unfair.

A penalty on the kickoff return started the Wildcats on their own 11. After two plays for no gain, Cal committed an offside penalty, giving Arizona a third and five from their own 16. Thomas DeCoud came off the left corner unabated and leveled Stockton, CA native Willie Tuitama, Arizona's quarterback, violently separating him from the ball. Defensive end Tyson Alualu scooped up the ball at the 4 and dove into the end zone after the 12-yard sack, and the rout was officially "on" at 28-3.

The play reminded Cal fans of Zach Follett's hit on Tennessee quarterback Erik Ainge three weeks ago that also resulted in a fumble, the one linebacker Worrell Williams reeled in to score a touchdown.

In the Memorial Stadium press box, a comment was overheard that the Arizona team looked "demoralized."

They got moralized pretty quickly.

The halftime stats were pretty even, although the score was not, at 31-10 Bears. The Wildcats had 10 first downs to Cal's 13, and added 97 yards of offense in the second period while Cal had just 110.

Arizona statistically dominated the third period, posting nine first downs to Cal's two, and 121 net yards to Cal's 43.

Tuitama said, "We came back in the second half. We did a good job of bouncing back."

His coach, Mike Stoops, agreed, "Our kids always play hard, and our offense is light years ahead of where it has been." Tuitama was 15-for-18 passing in the third quarter for 110 yards, most of it on short circle routes and passes in the flat.

Arizona threw the ball, and threw it some more, and then they got serious about throwing it. Tuitama, a junior, obliterated the Arizona record for completions with 41 on the day. He owned the record (previously 33) before the third period ended.

Arizona dinked Cal to death with 62 passes attempted on the day for 309 yards. Still, for the second straight week, the Bear defense allowed only one play of more than 20 yards. "They were doing a good job of keeping some stuff away from us downfield," Tuitama said. "We had some good plays underneath (the coverage). We expected them to take stuff away from us downfield. That's why we had the short little crossing routes. We tried to get the ball downfield, but they were taking it away."

Forsett amassed 64 yards on 13 carries in the first half, but, on top of the sore ankle he'd been nursing all week, he sustained a quad contusion late in the first half and did not play in the third quarter.

Redshirt freshman James Montgomery tried to pick up the slack. He gained 38 yards on 5 carries and punched in Cal's only 3rd quarter touchdown, but early in the 4th quarter disaster struck when he fumbled at his own 23. Arizona defensive tackle Lionel Dotson recovered the fumble at the 21, and the Wildcats were facing a short field trailing 38-24.

The Wildcats mustered just 6 yards of offense and had to settle for a field goal to close the gap to 11.

That was enough for Jeff Tedford. There's a saying in bridge, "when in doubt, lead your ace." Whether Tedford plays bridge or not, he knows the value of an ace. "Justin was nursing the injury," Tedford said, "and we wanted to keep him out, but the fumble had a lot to do with his return. We needed to run the ball then, and we couldn't trust the ball to people who were going to put it on the ground."

Forsett returned to the game with 13:15 left. Cal took over on their own 26 after a block in the back penalty cost them field position on the runback.

Forsett immediately exerted his calming influence on the fans and the game, ripping off a gain of 12 on the first play of the series. Longshore rolled left and completed an 8-yard toss to Hawkins, then fullback Will Ta'ufo'ou drove most of the Arizona defense backwards for 4 yards. Ta'ufo'ou paid a price for the play, injuring his posterior cruciate ligament on the play and limping off the field with assistance. Tedford was willing to say only that he would be listed as "day-to-day", but it could be more serious.

Longshore then completed a pass over the middle to Robert Jordan for 13 yards and another first down to the Arizona 27.

From there, it was all Forsett.

An inside handoff for 8, then another inside handoff deep in the backfield from the shotgun that let the talented tailback spot a crease to the right side and slide off a tackle. He was dragged down at the Wildcat 4.

Then, the truly conservative nature of Tedford was put on public display when quarterback Nate Longshore lined up as a wide receiver on the next two plays with "quarterback" Forsett taking direct snaps.

It took the two plays to get into the end zone, but the Arlington, Texas native would not be denied, darting for the score off left tackle with 9:10 left in the game.

The touchdown pushed the lead to 45-27, but more importantly, it ended a string of three consecutive three-and-outs, and consumed more than four minutes of clock. Forsett finished the day with 117 yards.

Tedford said in his post-game press conference that Longshore's job - when he lines up at wide receiver - "is to stand there and not get hurt," a message that the QB may not have fully received. Longshore's post-game comment was that "Justin (Forsett) knows the audible for a fade route, and I'm going to run that one of these times." Presuming, of course, that Tedford does not read about it here first.

Across the room, Forsett weighed in on the subject himself, admitting that he "knows the audible, but I'm not sure I'm going in Nate's direction with it."

It's easy to have fun after posting a win in the conference opener. The victory raised Cal's record to 16-13-1 in Pac-10 lid-lifters, but it won't get any easier any time soon.

Cal has started now the 2007 season 4-0, and probably won't suffer in the rankings after Florida's near miss with Mississippi this week, but there's a lot to work on and a lot to worry about as future games roll out.

Cal's kickoff coverage left a good deal to be desired - it looked much better than it was because Arizona several times hurt themselves with penalties on the runbacks.

Uncharacteristically, ,Bears committed 14 penalties for 121 yards. Tedford was not happy about that.

Asked if he was worried going into noisy Autzen Stadium in Eugene next week to face the team he previously coached (the Oregon Ducks who also run a spread offense and who undoubtedly will learn a lot from watching today's game films), Tedford said "there's no special feeling there any more - maybe there was the first year --- but I'm definitely worried. I worry every week, but I'm particularly concerned about Oregon."

Cal's win over Arizona extinguished the second of their ghosts of bad memories from last season. The first was exacting retribution on Tennessee's Volunteers for blowing up their season in the first week last year; then this one on Arizona for preventing the Golden Bears from participating in their first Rose Bowl since the Nixon vice-presidency.

DeCoud joked that the Bears could now call themselves the "ghost-busters."

Jokes aside, DeCoud can call himself just flat-out good. His 10 tackles that included a sack, a forced fumble, and an interception to boot (the sack and interception were each career firsts) highlighted an outstanding day.

On this day the entire defense needed to stand out, and no one did more than Marcus Ezeff, Ezeff had some huge shoes to fill when Daymeion Hughes graduated, but he is stepping into them. 14 tackles, 7 solo, matching linebacker Worrell Williams for the team lead in tackles, goes a long way toward fitting the glass slipper.

Next week, the Oregon Ducks await.

Cal has four very, very tough conference games this year against teams that - even if they are a talent notch or two below USC in the conference - are all road games.

Next week is the first; the Ducks will be the Bears' biggest test of the season so far.
