Emptying Out The Notebook - Cal vs. Arizona

This week's edition looks at various aspects of Cal's 45-27 victory over Arizona including how the Bears caused the Wildcats to outfox themselves in the first quarter, Thomas DeCoud's game of a lifetime, a small Shakespeare reference, how Will Taufoou went all John Deere on the Arizona defense, a model for shortening meetings, and the evershrinking list of teams without issues.

For all of the bully-boy antics of Arizona's Mike Stoops, the Wildcats' quick first quarter descent was marked by a considerable degree of fear.  Fear of punting to DeSean Jackson led to two out-of-bounds punts which gave the Bears short fields, enabling them to drive 50 and 52 yards for first quarter touchdowns. Fear of Jahvid Best as a receiver caused Arizona to commit two defenders to him and additional defenders to shift over as quarterback Nate Longshore looked his way, which left the middle of the field wide open for Lavelle Hawkins, who caught an 18-yard touchdown pass. And finally, fear of Will Taufoou running the ball up the middle in a short yardage situation on a 3rd-and-goal from the Wildcat 1 caused the Wildcats to stuff the middle as the Bears faked the handoff to him, while Best scored easily on a toss left, that put the Bears up 21-3.

While Arizona obviously didn't have the talent to match up with the Bears, they had to take some chances to try to make Cal work harder for its points. Unfortunately for the Wildcats' sake, those chances didn't pay off and put them behind the 8-ball early.

* * * * *

Safety Thomas DeCoud was spectacular in victory, with 10 tackles, an interception, a fumble recovery, and the first quarter sack of Arizona's Willie Tuitama resulting in a fumble, which was recovered by Tyson Alualu in the end zone, which put the Bears up 28-3 and effectively ended the football game.

While Arizona was able to hang around, the effect was akin to having a Pekingese nip at your heels for a few blocks.  While you'll never feel in any danger of losing control of the situation, you wonder at some point, if after all the yapping,  if it's going to have the gumption to take a bite.

On an afternoon where the Bear defense creatively mixed their blitzes, DeCoud came charging in untouched on a 3rd-and-6 from the Arizona 15, jarring the ball loose from Tuitama, marking the second time this year that a quarterback sack has resulted in a defensive touchdown.

Following his sack, he was serenaded whith a chant of  "Thomas DeCoud! Thomas DeCoud! Thomas DeCoud!" from the student section.

That play was just one of several that DeCoud made during the afternoon.

When Arizona's Devin Ross fielded a kickoff at their 10, but a Bear defender charged through the Wildcats blocking to nail him at the 19?

That was DeCoud.

Near the end of the first half, Tuitama attempted a long pass downfield for Terrell Thomas, and which defender snared it?

That would be DeCoud again.

Following his first career interception, he raced behind the Cal sidelines, climbed on a bench, pointed the ball towards the student section, and appeared as if he was going to throw it there, before being nudged on the elbow by one of the team's staff members and refraining.

And on a 3rd-and-16 from the Arizona 39 early in the fourth quarter, a completion from Tuitama to Chris Jennings ended badly when Syd'Quan Thompson caused a fumble, the Bear that came up with it?

The ubiquitous DeCoud.

Following the game, at the foot of section TT, two of the happiest people in the stadium were Ronaldo and Angellique DeCoud, Thomas's parents.  Along with Granny Annie, they attend almost all of Cal's mid-week practices, and with their son being a senior, each moment this season takes on a special value.

And for parents to have the student section chanting their son's name, while he's having the game of his life, is going to be something that'll linger in their memory.

"This morning, I had a feeling about today," said a beaming Ronaldo DeCoud after the game, with the intuition that only a parent can have. "I had a feeling."

While it's terrific when opposing teams bring their fans, cheering squads, bands, mascots, and traditions, there are some times when discretion ought to be the better part of valor.

Follow each of Arizona's scores, one of their spirit personnel would take the large Arizona flag and run across the back of the end zone in front of the Memorial Stadium's Blue Zone which was overwhelmingly populated with Bear fans who booed the flag.

While the small number of Wildcat fans who made the trip meant that they didn't come close to filling out a section of Memorial, it ought to be gently suggested that school's restrict their celebratory activities to the area in front of their sections.

Although if said suggestion was implemented, it would prevent Cal fans the chance to chant "USA! USA!" When the people carrying the Arizona State flags cross back across the end zone, the order of the letters on their flags is reversed, giving the Blue Zone the momentary (and cheeky) chance to salute the nation.

There is no account of yesterday's game which will not severely understate the contribution of fullback Will Taufoou.  While the term warrior is used liberally in football circles, Taufoou's contribution, as a short-yardage runner, blocker, and decoy were immense.

With the offense making increased use of two tight ends this season, along with it's frequent three wide receiver sets, the role of the fullback has been diminished this season.

Yet that hasn't stopped Taufoou from making contributions.

Early in the first quarter on a 1st-and-goal from the Arizona 9, Justin Forsett took a direct snap from center Alex Mack, running toward the right side of the line. Taufoou sealed off a defender coming in from the outside, clearing a lane for Forsett to score his first of two touchdowns.

Late in the first quarter, on a 3rd-and-1 from the Arizona 9, Taufoou easily blasted through the line for a four-yard gain and a first down. Three plays later,on a 3rd-and-goal from the Arizona 1, the Wildcats were determined to not have a repeat. As they bit on the fake to Taufoou up the middle, the resulting toss to Jahvid Best resulted in an easy touchdown.

With the Bears up 38-27 and the Wildcats intent on handing around, the Bears had a 2nd-and-2 from their 46 midway through the fourth quarter. Taufoou took the handoff, bulldozed his way through the line, breaking tackles and carrying people with him, on his way to a 14-yard gain, earning a rousing cheer from most of the 56,021 in attendance.

After the play, Taufoou left the field, obviously banged up and in a little bit of discomfort.  Any sort of injury to the 6-0, 253 pound battering ram from Saint Francis High, would be a blow to the Bears, but before the fans had much of a chance to contemplate that possiblity,  Taufoou came back onto the field five plays later, to lay a devastating block on a Wildcat defender, clearing the way for a Justin Forsett touchdown, putting the Bears up 45-27, ptting an end to his afternoon's work.

Yet after the play, it was clear that all wasn't well with Taufoou. On the sidelines, as the training staff looked at his knee, he removed his helmet and pads, and put  on a hooded sweatshirt, with the hood pulled over his head. Anytime a knee's hurt there's always a considerable degree of uncertainty, and the tendency is to expect the worst until the initial diagnosis and x-rays come through.

Linebacker Zack Follett, who didn't suit up on account of a neck injury came by to talk to him for a long time, followed by linebacker Anthony Felder, and then fullback Brian Holley

But when the final whistle blew and it was time to head for the locker room, Taufoou didn't need crutches, and he didn't need assistance.  He hopped off the bench, with one knee heavily iced, carrying his helmet and pads, and walked towards the north exit of the Memorial Stadium, earning the appreciative applause of the Memorial Stadium fans who understood what they've just seen.

(Will Taufoou will be profiled in greater depth later this week.)

The game's first quarter ended at 4:06 p.m. which meant that it officially lasted 59 minutes.  Whatever the NCAA was hoping to change through it's various attempts to shorten the game, none of them were going to work on Saturday.

On top of having a team throw the ball 60 times, which will mean more stops in play, whether for first downs or incomplete passes, as well as 22 penalties which take time to sort out, there seemed to be several long meetings by the officiating staff, which led one to wonder if they were working on churning a mission statement or issuing a position paper at the end of the game.

The frequent conferences suggested that it might be time to fast-track economist Tyler Cowen's idea for improving meetings, as recounted in a recent review in The Economist:

Mr Cowen's model for running better meetings is hard to beat: put in place a system (he suggests body sensors) that enables participants to signal their boredom anonymously. When everyone is known to be bored, the meeting halts.

While the Bears haven't won regularly with the decisiveness of the 2004 and 2006 teams - it's worth noting that their 4-0 start is just their second in the Jeff Tedford era, although some will be quick to point out that the other team that started similarly well went to 5-0 before losing four of its next five games.

For all of the concerns that Cal isn't dominating opponents for all 60 minutes, a team's season is very much of an evolutionary process.  While there are some teams that can dominate from start to finish, there are more teams that manage to have very good records while keeping many of its opponents at a steady if not entirely comfortable distance throughout the season.

The Bears have remained undefeated while still working towards the complete game.   The long passing game hasn't hit its stride but the Bears offense has remained productive while getting limited results from DeSean Jackson. Although Cal gave up 309 yards passing, that result is fairly low considering that Arizona passed the ball 62 times, and averaged less than 8 yards a completion.

While the chances of this being Arizona's breakthrough season are getting increasingly smaller with each passing week, it's spread offense is going to get better as Tuitama feels more comfortable with it, and teams that don't have the personnel, aren't as creative with their defensive coverage, and just don't match up well, will have all kinds of problems.  If its defense can put together a reasonably solid effort, don't be surprised if the Wildcats pull out a "where did that come from victory" once or twice before the season's end.

And in other news, thanks to Mississippi, the list of teams without issues has now shrunk to three: USC, LSU, and Oklahoma.

Emptying Out The Notebook would like to extend an appreciative thanks to loyal Cal fan Richard Unger for providing the ticket enabling us to provide a set of observations different than what can usually be picked up from press box and other parts of the stadium.
