Bears Make a National Statement

In an always evenly-matched series that usually holds to form, the Bears came into hostile Autzen Stadium Saturday with something to prove.

With a 4-0 record, a shiny #6 ranking and a prolific offense, the Bears have garnered national attention thus far this season. Add one of the most talented receiving trios in the nation with Heisman Trophy hopeful DeSean Jackson along with one of the national leaders in yards per game at 121 as well touchdowns, with 7 in Justin Forsett and you have a team with a lot of weapons and a lot of ways to beat you.

However, the defense has been an Achilles heel this season, sometimes making games closer than they should've been.

In Oregon, the Bears would face their stiffest test yet on defense and would have a chance to answer critics who said that the Bears wouldn't be able to stop the Ducks potent scoring machine or win in Eugene for the first time in 20 years, especially with two starters out in linebacker Zack Follett as well as defensive end Rulon Davis, both out with injuries.

The Ducks featured one of the nation's leading qb's in Dennis Dixon, who came in with an impressive 11 touchdown to zero interception ratio, a 68% completion percentage and 306 yards per game –good enough to rank 4th in the country in passing efficiency.

Throw in Jonathon Stewart, one of the nation's best kick returners as well as the Pac 10's leading rusher at 125 yards a game and you get an 11th ranked Duck squad that came into the game leading the Pac 10 in scoring at 48.5 points per game as well as total offense at 536 yards per game.

The challenge would be formidable and the prize substantial for the winner of the 2007 grudge match, with the winner potentially positioning themselves as a strong BCS bowl contender and a move up in the rankings.

The first half was played as if each team was on a mission to prove that you can't always judge a book by its cover.

After winning the opening coin flip, the Bears promptly put their high-powered offense into neutral, going a quick three and out.

After stalling Oregon's initial possession before again failing to generate much offense and punting again, Oregon finally drew first blood late in the 1st quarter as Oregon drove 77 yards, largely behind the legs of Stewart, Dixon and Jeremiah Johnson before settling for a 32 yard field Matt Evensen field goal to go up 3-0.

The 2nd quarter did little to change to tide of the game.

The Bears did manage to put 3 points on the board to draw even with the Ducks on a Jordan Kay field goal of 34 yards on the Bears' only real drive of the half.

But the Ducks were able to quickly bounce back, with an 80 yard drive fueled by an ill-advised personal foul by safety Marcus Ezeff, hitting Stewart after he was forced out of bounds, moving.the ball to the Cal 22.

After receiver Derrick Jones took and end-around for 15 yards, Stewart punched in the first td of the game from 5 yards out with a run up the middle as the Ducks retook the lead.

With the running game averaging a paltry 3.5 yards per carry in the first half and quarterback Nate Longshore settling for a safe, short passing game, the Bears were only generating sporadic offense, with just 31 yards on the ground and 88 in the air –not enough to win most games, let alone in a road game against a team coming into the game as one of the nation's top offensive squads.

Lee Corso and his ESPN Gameday crew must've wondered if they'd wandered into a matchup of Willamette University and Linfield College rather than a matchup of two of the top teams in the nation after the first half offensive yawnfest.

After the break, an excellent 45 yard punt by Josh Syria put the Bears in poor opening position after they forced the Ducks into a 3 and out after receiving the kickoff, pinning the Bears back at the Oregon 12.

The Bears were undaunted as Forsett finally got untracked on the first play of the drive, bursting around left tackle for an 11 yard 1st down.

Longshore hit Jackson on the next play for another 1st down, followed by a Forsett run for 8 to the Bear 43. With a 5 yard completion to Jackson, the Bears crossed midfield to the Duck 48, with 3 first downs in their first 4 plays.

Forsett continued to propel the Bears, bursting off tackle again for a 24 yard gain to the Duck 19.

With the Oregon crowd roaring, the Ducks halted the Bear drive as Cal settled for a field goal which was not to be, as Kay missed wide left on the 33 yard attempt.

But after forcing another 3 and out, the Cal defense continued to shine.

The Bears caught a break on the punt, as Oregon was called for interfering with Jackson's attempt to field the kick, letting the Bears start on their 42. They immediately started rolling, with Longshore hitting Robert Jordan on a 12 yard pass down the sideline for a quick 1st down.

An 11 yard pass to Forsett drove the ball down to the Duck 28 before the Bears finally struck paydirt, with Longshore hitting a wide-open Jackson in the end zone for a td in a quick 2 minute drive as the Bears offense continued to show signs of life in the 2nd half, bringing the score to 10-10 with 4:44 left in the 3rd quarter.

As if awakened from hibernation, the Duck offense struck right back with Dixon hitting tight end Ed Dixon up the middle for 15 before going back up the middle again to former De La Salle wide receiver Cameron Colvin for a 42 yard td as the Ducks surged back into the lead, 17-10.

You could almost hear a sigh of relief from the Gameday crew in between the hometown yappings of former Duck quarterback Dan Fouts on the nationally televised telecast.

The Bears drove right back, with a 16 yard completion to Hawkins along with a 31 yard strike to Jackson. The quarter ended with Forsett taking a quick Longshore toss a foot short of the goal line.

After a Longshore keeper was stopped short, Forsett punched it in to even the score at 17.

After narrowly missing recovering a Crenshaw fumble at the 19 on the return, the Bears forced a 3 and out, with Jackson fielding Syria's short 30 yard punt at midfield.

With their first chance to take the lead since the game's opening drive, the Bears struck quickly, covering 51 yards in 5 plays, with Jackson scoring on an electrifying quick catch and burst up the sideline as the speedy receiver froze the defender in his tracks for his second td on the day as the Bears finally led, 24-17.

The Bears caught a break on the kickoff as the Duck returners collided while fielding the kick, with gunner Jahvid Best flying in for the recovery as the Bears took over at the Duck 26.

After a holding penalty and a sack of Longshore forced the Bears out of field goal range, the Bears were unable to capitalize on the Duck gift and were forced to punt. A good boot by punter Andrew Larsen pinned the Ducks back at the 10 with 10 minutes to go in the game.

The Ducks were undeterred, driving straight down the field with a 36 yard reception by Williams and a 10 yard scramble by Dixon spurring the drive before Dixon punched it in from the 1, knotting the game at 24 with 7:06 left.

The Bears took over at the 32 after a short return by Brian Holley on the pooch kick.

Longshore stunned the crowd by opening the drive with a 6 yard keeper around the left side before hitting Jackson on a crucial 3rd down pass to keep the drive alive at the Bear 46.

Potential disaster then struck as Longshore took a shot to the ankle on an incomplete pass down field.

Redshirt frosh quarterback was thrust into a pressure-packed situation as the Portland native stepped in to fill Longshore's shoes on short notice.

The Bears kept it simple, with two Forsett runs up the middle as the Ducks held strong, forcing the punt.

After another excellent punt coverage by Best stopped the Ducks at the 10 on the punt, the Bears forced the occasionally-erratic Dixon into a huge mistake, as the San Leandro native locked onto his receiver, missing Anthony Felder as he dropped back into coverage, with Felder coming up with the huge interception at the Duck 15.

Two runs by Forsett put the Bears in the lead again at 31-24 after the Kay PAT with 3:31 to go.

With the Bears in a soft prevent defense, the Ducks rolled into scoring territory.

The turnover-prone Dixon struck again however, as defensive end Tyson Alualu was the appreciative recipient of another Dixon interception as the Bears took over on the Cal 15.

With the Bears unable to move the ball and run out the clock, Oregon forced a quick punt and had an opportunity to mount a last minute comeback, taking over at their own 23 with 1:45 to go.

After a big 26 yard reception by Johnson took the ball to the Cal 40, followed by a catch and run by Colvin to the Bear 20, the Ducks were on the move again. After a 15 yard reception by Williams moved the ball to the Cal 5 with 22 seconds remaining, it appeared the game was headed for overtime as many had predicted for this big matchup.

One 1st and goal, Dixon hit Colvin with a quick pass in the left flat, as Colvin stretched for the goal line. As the Oregon-record crowd of 59,273 roared in anticipation, safety Marcus Ezeff put the hit on Colvin, jarring the ball loose and into the end zone, forcing a touchback and quieting the incredulous Oregon crowd.

Nerves frayed as the call was reviewed for what seemed to be hours. The longer it took, the more doubt crept into Bear fans' minds, as controversial road game calls often have less than satisfactory results for the traveling team.

Would the call be overruled, saying the ball broke the plane of the goal line? After so many years of disappointing heartbreak losses in every imaginary way, it had to be a question many Cal fans were asking.

But this is a new era –an era where Cal Head Coach Jeff Tedford has led his Bear squad to many monumental streak-busters, including a 20 year stretch where the Bears failed to win at Autzen –until today, as the call on the field was upheld and the Bears ran out the clock with a final kneel-down as time expired.

The Cal band and 2,500 strong Cal fan contingent went nuts as they were gathered in the end zone not more than 20 feet from the critical play.

Joyous coaches and players embraced and high-fived as receivers Jordan and Hawkins jumped up in the crowd and grabbed batons to lead the raucous Cal crowd and band in their celebration.

With the loss of #3 Oklahoma and #5 West Virginia, the win positioned the Bears to move up to #4 or even #3 in the polls tomorrow if Auburn's lead over Florida held after the exciting victory.

With a bye week to heal up, the Bears will have an opportunity to savor their big victory and focus on continuing their momentum.

"I don't know if I can put it into words how proud I am of these guys," said Tedford after the game. "I'm just so proud of them and I think today was an all-around great team effort. We came up with some big plays."

"This win was amazing because we got down and came back," said a smiling Hawkins. "Hats off to the defense because they really played their hearts out."

Tailback Best, normally very reserved, clearly enjoyed the big win over the Ducks as noted with a smile the thought that was surely on Bear fans' minds throughout the country.

"Oregon is a good team," said Best. "They deserve to be high in the rankings. But we came out today to prove ourselves. Cal sent a message with this game."

Consider that message received.
