Emptying Out the Notebook - Cal vs. OSU

This week's edition includes additional postgame comments from the Cal-Oregon State game, thoughts from Kevin Riley the day after, a look back at some of Riley's better moments, Tedford talks about what he was thinking after slamming down his headset and clipboard, where Cal sits in the polls, how some Bears are doing in the Pac-10 stats, and an update on Robert Jordan's shoulder.

Losses always hurt. And for a team that's was flirting with a #1 ranking and national championship hopes, Saturday's loss hit especially hard.  While the team doesn't talk about rankings, the downcast expressions and soft voices seemed to indicate that the team realized that it might have lost something more than a game.

Depending on who you spoke to, some members of the team were either aware of then #1 LSU's loss to Kentucky during the game or didn't find out until after the game.

"I didn't get the score until after the game," said linebacker Worrell Williams. "But that doesn't mean anything if you can't do your job."

"I heard that LSU lost, but that doesn't concern us," said wide receiver Lavelle Hawkins.

"The LSU score didn't affect us," said quarterback Kevin Riley. "The team wasn't worried about it."

While you weren't going to get any comments from anybody about speculating on a potential #1 ranking, the team was in the process of trying to wring out the nagging feeling that follows a loss, learn from its mistakes, put the game behind them, and start looking forward to next Saturday's game against UCLA all at once.

"We're down," said linebacker Anthony Felder after the game. "We can't think about (rankings), we have to keep fighting on...I feel like we let (Oregon State) off the hook. We had busted coverages and blown assignments."

"With the character that we have, it won't be a problem for us to bounce back," said safety Thomas DeCoud.  "Win or lose, we have to look to the next team, and this'll make us work that much harder."

"We were thinking that we were going to win. The only team that can beat us is Cal," said linebacker Worrell Williams. "We lost the field position game."

"We just lost," said Hawkins. "They were a better team (tonight). We've got to keep our heads up."

Less than 24 hours after an E ticket ride of a game, it was back to work for Kevin Riley and the rest of the quarterbacks on Sunday.

While it's still too early to tell whether Nate Longshore will be ready for this weekend's game against UCLA, coach Tedford was optimistic.

"We'll see how Nate goes this week," said Tedford. "Each day he's been getting better and better."

Tedford looked at both Longshore and Riley during pre-game drills on Saturday and decided to go with Riley.

"We gave Nate a chance in the pre-game," said Tedford after Saturday's 31-28 loss. "We wanted to see if he had the ability to protect himself. He wouldn't have been able to move around. He really tried hard to get ready."

Riley, a redshirt freshman, overcame a slow start to throw for 294 yards and a handful of mind-blowing plays that'll result in dozens of clicks of the replay button on  the DVR remote. While the one play will be debated is his scramble on a first-down play from deep in Oregon State territory while the Bears had no time outs left, the larger truth to emerge from Saturday's game is that the Bears can be confident knowing that Riley can play quarterback at the Division I level.

On Sunday, with a day for Saturday's game to sink in, Riley was in good spirits.

"I got a lot of messages," said Riley, who'd turned off his phone. "I got one from  (former Oregon QB) Kellen Clemens. That meant a lot because I'd thrown with him."

After the game, he didn't re-watch it, choosing to spend time with his teammates, but admitted that he spent some time thinking about what else he could have done.

"We had the momentum, we were going down field, and we went for the score and could have won," said Riley, who spoke to the other quarterbacks throughout the game to discuss what was going on the field and what the offense would be doing. "Everybody thought that we'd win."

Even though Cal's situation looked dire down 10 late in the fourth quarter, Riley showed the calmness of a veteran in taking the Bears downfield on two drives.

"I was all right after the first two drives," said Riley. "I love playing the game and being out there was just fun...At the end, I was concentrating hard, everybody in the huddle felt fine and  we were confident we were going to win."

Losing a game like Saturday's when a victory or a chance to send the game in overtime was within a team's grasp was certainly frustrating.  For a redshirt freshman, losing a game like this could be devastating, but not if Tedford can help it.

"I met with Kevin, I told him how proud I was of his effort and told him not to let it bring you down," said Tedford.

All right, it's time to pick your favorite Kevin Riley moments from Saturday.

Was it the first play of the second quarter, where on a 3rd-and-1 from the Cal 43, where the Bears eschewed the handoff to Forsett going into the line in favor of a 35-yard pass down the right sideline from Riley to Lavelle Hawkins?  Besides the daring decision to try a downfield pass on a short-yardage situation, the pass was one where Hawkins wasn't clearly open when Riley threw the ball, but the pass had enough length and loft that it allowed Hawkins to make a play on it even while being closely guarded.

Or maybe it was the play late in the first half when from 1st-and-10 on the Oregon State 32, where Riley sensed some pressure, moved out of the pocket and on the run threw a laser of a pass to Robert Jordan who was down the left sideline, who made a move and took it down to the 3, for a 29-yard gain.

The 2nd-and-16 pass from the OSU 25, where he threw an 18-yard completion to Hawkins for a first down?

How about that play late in the game where on a 1st-and-10 from the Cal 6, Riley eluded a pass rusher and a possible safety, ran outside the pocket, quickly planted and threw a pass that might have gone at least 50 yards down field toward DeSean Jackson. Although the pass went out of bounds, that was one play which showed off his athletic ability.

Then there was the 4th-and-17 play from the Cal 16, that was equal parts Riley and Hawkins.  Riley threw to Hawkins who was crossing form the left side, and when he caught the ball, Beaver defenders converged on him and it looked like he would be stopped short, but Hawkins fought his way forward for a 20-yard gain and a first down.

And then on the next play, he threw a beautifully arced down the right sideline to a diving Robert Jordan for a 37-yard gain, putting the ball on the Oregon State 27.

By comparison to these plays, his 64-yard touchdown pass to Hawkins that brought the Bears to within three was pedestrian.

Then there was his 23-yard completion to tight end Craig Stevens just prior to Cal's ill-fated goal line sequence.  On a 3rd-and-4 from the Oregon State 30, Riley was getting pressure from the Beaver pass rush and had a defender hanging around his legs when he threw a pass high to Stevens.  Stevens, who's had issues with dropped passes this season, reached high to make a difficult catch then carried Oregon State defenders for another 10 yards, taking the ball to Beaver 7.

"I was falling, but I saw him," said Riley.

"I knew he had mobility," said Tedford. "But that one to Craig. I'm not sure anybody has that kind of ability. You don't want to have to live on those sorts of things."

* * * * *

One day later, how did the game sit with head coach Jeff Tedford?

"There were lots of plays to be made in the game," said Tedford. "We made some, but we didn't make enough. We also lost the turnover and field goal battles."

He isn't worried that there will be any carryover effect from Saturday's game, and has faith in the team's resilience.

"They've got pretty short memories," said Tedford. "Sometimes they'll pick the coaches up.  They have a lot of confidence. They'll prepare. They don't want to let this feeling linger.  We've talked about how we've got to get things going and move forward. We can't pout, we've got to live and learn from this. ..I'm proud of (the team's) effort. They played hard, from the opening kickoff all the way to the end and they never gave up."

* * * * *

Tedford's known for his general unflappability, but the TV broadcast showed him throwing down his headset and his clipboard as time ran out on the Bears. With a 1st-and-goal from the Oregon State 12 with 14 seconds left, the plan was to take one shot and the end zone and then bring on the field goal unit to kick a potential game-tying field goal that would have sent the game onto overtime.  With the Bears having seized the momentum in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, and with a suddenly loud Memorial Stadium crowd behind them, one would have liked their chances in overtime.  But when Riley was tackled by Joey LaRocque at the OSU 10, and the Bears having no timeouts, there was no time for the Bears to either line up again and spike the ball or get the field goal unit on the field; thus provoking Tedford's reaction.

"It was disappointing to not get a shot at least of tying the game," said Tedford. "It wasn't Kevin, but how the whole game came down."

Although looking at the various poll and rankings aren't nearly as appealing as it was a week ago, the Bears loss dropped to #9 in the USA Today Coaches poll, #10 in the AP poll, #12 in the BCS rankings, and #11 in Sagarin.

In the AP, the Bears are behind Ohio State, South Florida, Boston College, Oklahoma, LSU, South Carolina, Oregon, Kentucky, and West Virginia.  The first three teams are undefeated, while the following six teams each have one loss.  With 1,065 points, the Bears are close enough to West Virginia (1,090) and Kentucky (1,098), then a convincing win over UCLA could sway some voters and push them up the 8th next week.  It would then put Cal right behind Oregon and 7th; but the thinking that would cause voters to put Oregon one spot ahead of Cal when the Bears won the head-to-head match-up is a topic for another day.  The wackiest aspect of the AP Poll was that one voter gave Arizona State a #1 vote.

In the USA Today poll, the Bears are behind Ohio State, Boston College, South Florida, Oklahoma, LSU, Oregon, West Virginia, and South Carolina, and are tied with USC at 9th.   Positions seven through 11 are very close: as West Virginia (1,007), South Carolina (997), Cal (983), USC (983), and Virginia Tech (982) are close enough that lopsided or convincing win could make a difference.

The BCS released its first set of rankings on Sunday, and had the Bears lower than the other two polls.  Based on a melange of poll results and various computer rankings, the Bears are behind all of the teams in the AP poll as well as Virginia Tech and Arizona State.  The Bears are ahead of Kansas (#13 BCS, #15 AP, #15 USA Today), USC (#14 BCS, #13 AP, #9 USA Today), and Florida (#15 BCS, #14 AP, #14 USA Today).

The Pac-10 is well represented in the BCS rankings with #8 Arizona State, #10 Oregon, #12 Cal, and #14 Arizona State.  By comparison, the Big 10 has #1 Ohio State and...that's all folks.

While more injury news will be forthcoming on Tuesday, Tedford did say that wide receiver Robert Jordan was diagnosed with a 2nd degree AC sprain on his shoulder, which is different way of saying he has a separated shoulder.

According to a physician that EOTN consulted, a 2nd degree sprain is between a 1st degree sprain (barely noticeable) and a 3rd degree sprain (all of the ligaments are torn completely and surgery would be required).  With a 2nd degree sprain, Jordan's arm will likely have to be in a sling, but the amount of recovery time will depend on the severity of the sprain.  The one caveat is that recovery would have to be complete before he'd be able to play, otherwise a hit will result in tremendous pain and would likely result in a fumble.

The Pac-10 stats have been updated following Saturday's game. The Bears are ranked third in total offense with 434.7 yards a game, trailing Oregon (532.5 yards per game.) and Arizona State (437.3 yards per game)...Defensively the Bears are at 6th, allowing 380.0 yards a game, trailing USC, Arizona State, Oregon State, UCLA, and Arizona...Cal still leads in turnover margin with a +9, averaging +1.5 turnovers a game...Cal's also 2nd in the conference in red zone defense, allowing 22 scores out of 29 opponent possessions (75.9%) trailing just Oregon.

Justin Forsett has taken over the Pac-10 rushing lead, and his 122.5 yards per game average tops Oregon's Jonathan Stewart (114.8) and Oregon State's Yvenson Bernard (107.4).   Halfway into the season, Forsett's on pace to rush for 1,470 yards, or 1,592 yards if the Bears make it to a bowl game...Lavelle Hawkins is 3rd in the conference in receptions as his 6.00 receptions per game trails Arizona's Mike Thomas (7.14 per game) and Washington State's Brandon Gipson (6.50)...Hawkins is also second in the conference in all-purpose running, averaging 152.7 yards a game, which trails Stewart's 179.0 yards a game...After his four punts for a 55.8 yard average on Saturday, Andrew Larson has now leapt up to 2nd in the Pac-10 in punting with a 43.0 average, just trailing Arizona's Keenyn Crier (44.4 avg.)...The Bears have three tacklers in the conference's top nine with Anthony Felder leading the conference (10.3 per game), Worrell Williams at 4th (9.8 per game), and Marcus Ezeff at 9th (8.8).
