Larson Turns The Field Around

While Nick Harris is regarded as one of Cal's all-time greatest punters; one reason Golden Bear fans had good memories about him was because they saw him on the field quite frequently, and in all candor, more often than they would have liked to. Now compare that to current punter Andrew Larson, who's slowly putting together a terrific career at Cal.

Because the Bear offense has had its way with most opponents, and is equally adept at grinding out drives and scoring quick touchdowns,    Larson escapes notices because he isn't on the field all that much. Since coming to Cal from Saddleback Community College in 2006, he's averaged just over four punts a game. Contrast that with the prolific Harris, who was showcased due to an offense that sputtered more often than not, and averaged seven punts a game over a four-year career.

Next to perhaps Kevin Riley, no other Cal player felt the highs and lows of last Saturday's 31-28 loss to Oregon State than Larson. The senior punter had one of the best games of a punter in school history, hitting four punts for a 55.8 yard average, including a 73-yarder that was the fifth-best in school history. Yet his outstanding punting performance was tempered by a mishit squib kick late in the first half that helped put the Beavers in position to kick a 53-yard field goal, and when a game is decided by three points, plays like that have a nasty way of lingering.

Larson, who also does kickoffs and is pencilled in for long-distance field goal duty, has been solid during his two years as Cal's punter.  This year he's averaging 43.0, good for 2nd in the Pac-10, and leads the conference in net punting with a 40.2 average.   In 2006, Larsen was second-team All Pac-10, while his 42.6 yard average was good for third in the Pac-10, and was the sixth best average in school history and he led the conference in net punting with a 38.3 average. These are all reasons why Larson's regarded as one of the top senior punters in the country. Coming into this season, Mel Kiper had Larson ranked as the #3 punter in the senior class, and NFLDraftscout.com currently has him ranked fourth.

While most fans were simply happy that Friday's showers had come and gone at Memorial Stadium, Larson could sense that the conditions were ideal for punting.

"The climate was amazing," said Larson. " It wasn't raining, and there wasn't really any wind except for a couple of spots."

After his opening punt, a 64-yarder that put Oregon State back at its 20, he knew he'd have a few more good ones left.

"Early, I hit one that went to the 20, and I thought I might have a chance to hit a couple really well," said Larson, who knew he could do better than the 64-yarder.

With just over 10-and-a-half minutes left in the second quarter and the game tied at 7, the Bears were facing a 4th-and-12 from their 18.  Larson took a quick peek downfield and saw something.

"When you're taking the snap, you look out of the corner of your eye quickly to see what's coming, so you can shorten up your leg if you need to," said Larson, who saw Oregon State punt returner Taylor Kavanagh trying to cheat up a few steps.

"The first two I didn't hit well, but on that one, I saw the returner scooting up, so I thought I'd really let it go," said Larson, who hit a towering punt that left the returner scrambling back to try to keep up with it. "I got a good bounce, too."

As the ball stopped rolling, the Bears downed the ball on the Oregon State for a 73-yard punt.

Even though Memorial Stadium has been known to have its windy moments, Larson's always liked punting in Berkeley. And maybe because he's accustomed to it, he hasn't gotten flustered by punting at opposing stadia.  While he can't name a stadium that's been particularly difficult for him, he can easily tick off a favorite.

"I've always done really well at home," said Larson. "It's great when you have the crowd behind you," said Larson, who'll be one of a handful of Bears from southern California who'll be playing in front of a big contingent of family members and friends this Saturday. "I haven't punted in the Rose Bowl yet, that'll be nice because it's close to home, but wherever I punt doesn't bother me."

Because the Bears have to spend time getting the offenses and defenses ready for upcoming games, it's not always possible to set the field aside for long periods of time to work on special teams play. Consequently, the punters and kickers have to be efficient with how they use their time and space.  Sometimes they'll work on kicking field goals from the sidelines, to help them get used to kicking from sharp angles.

"During pre-practice, I work with the snapper and get work that way. I also kick into the nets on the sidelines. That's not so bad because you don't have to go chase the ball," said Larson, who usually hangs out with fellow kickers Tom Schneider, Jordan Kay, Joe Robles, and Nick Demopoulos as well as long snapper Nick Sundberg during practice. "

He adds that the kickers and punters have to be careful in practice, making sure that they're able to get enough quality kicks without risking injury.

"You try to ration your punts during practice. You might be able to get 15 good ones," said Larson. "You also don't want to kickoff that much and you don't want to try that many field goals."

While practicing not just punting, but also field goals and kickoffs, Larson keeps himself busy during practice, having to be mindful about the different technical aspects involved in each, from timing, approach, followthrough and the actual kick itself.   Whereas punting involves a more direct approach and a higher kick, kickoffs are a little different.

"With kickoffs there's not as much strain," said Larson. " You've got a bigger leg swing and you come across your body, which works the back more than punting."

Larson had two kickoffs that were critical in last Saturday's Oregon State game.   One was the squib kick near the end of the first half that only went 28 yards before being downed by the Beavers at their 42.  Oregon State only had to drive a short distance to get into Alexis Serna's field goal range. Serna's 52 yard field goal with one second left in the half allowed the Beavers to close within one at 14-13 going into the half.

"I take full credit for that. That's all on me," said Larson who was hoping to get one more bounce of his kick. "It was a mishit and it bounced right at the guy. That never happens. He jumped in front of it, the ball didn't take the bounce liked I hope and it gave the guy an opportunity to fall on it," said Larsen.

He also kicked the onside kick with 2:31 left, that Oregon State's Chris Johnson recovered at the Cal 45.

Larson was pleased with the technical aspects of that kick.  He it high and with enough distance and loft that his teammates were able to get downfield and be in a position to get under the ball.  It took an outstanding effort by Johnson to leap, catch the ball, and secure it while being tackled for the Beavers to maintain possession.

"For the onside kickoff, I hit it just about perfect I'd give it about a 9 out of 10. It went 12 yards, so that was far enough for us to avoid getting a penalty.  Even though we weren't able to jump on it, that's what you want out of a kick."

In addition to punting and kicking off, he's also the Bears' long-distance field goal kicker. While he hasn't any attempted any field goals yet this year, he knows when he might be called upon.

"Whenever a field goal attempt is 50 yards or farther I'll go on and take it," said Larsen.  "Jordan (Kay) takes the shorter ones because he's more accurate than I am."

How far is his range?

"I hit a 67-yarder in practice, once."

Larson, like most talented football players, played several positions in high school. In addition to punting and placekicking for Laguna Hills High School, he also played safety and wide receiver and ended up being the school's athlete of the year in football and baseball. He was recruited as a punter to the University of Wyoming, but he was never able to embrace life in Laramie.

"That didn't work out well. The conditions weren't right, I was sick, and the mountain scene wasn't for me," said Larsen who decided to transfer to a school much closer to home to help regain his bearings. "I knew some of the coaches at Saddleback and I lived right by there, so I went there."

At Saddleback, Larson flourished, and in 2005, he was named a first-team All-American after averaging 42.6 yards a punt, including 17 punts inside the opponent's 20-yard line.   On top of All-American honors, he also was a two-time All-State pick and a two-time all-league selection.  With those kinds of credentials, it figured that he'd draw the attention of Division I schools, and this time around, it was nearby schools that keeping an eye on him.

"I was being recruited by Cal, Arizona, and USC. Cal was pushing for me to come, the other schools were kind of messing around waiting to see what I'd do.  I decided to come to Cal and it's been the right place for me."

While statistics for punters don't jump out at you the way that numbers for offensive skill players, or even placekickers do, last year, Larson had just four touchbacks in 49 punts, while 16 were fair caught, and 16 were downed in the 20.  Add that all up and it means that just 13 punts, or less than a quarter of his punts were actually returnable.

Prior to the Oregon State game, Larson's previous best game was last season's Big Game against Stanford at Memorial Stadium. In that game, he had three punts for a 52.7 yard average and his previous career-best of 72 yards.

Suffice it to say, Larson's a whole lot happier to be at Berkeley than he was in Laramie.

"It's been great. The team's doing well and I have nothing to complain about," said Larson who's particularly happy to see Cal's emergence as a top team. "This past year's been great and to see the school spirit here with all of the banners, and seeing the national attention, the team's been getting.  I'm glad to be part of the program as it's grown."
