Bruins stun Bears, 30-21

PASADENA - What was supposed to be the first step of a gradual march back up the top 10 ended calamitously for the California Golden Bears, as an inspired UCLA team upset the #9 Bears 30-21 in front of 83,494 at the Rose Bowl.

The Bears were marching towards a potential game-winning drive late in the 4th quarter when Alterraun Verner's 76-yard interception return for a touchdown off of Nate Longshore pass put the game out of reach.  With the loss, not only have Cal's hopes of a national championship disappeared, but the chances of returning to this stadium in January, while not impossible, are certainly bleak.

"We need to get better as players and coaches," said a disappointed Cal head coach Jeff Tedford afterwards, "We just need to get better in all phases...Anything can happen on any given week.  I think the conference is as good as it has ever been.   They just played better than we did.  We didn't get it done as a team today. They were more physical and deserved to win the football game"

As has been the case all year, the Bears played well at moments. Often this season, they've had enough of those moments to win, but during the past two weeks, Cal's play has been marked by turnovers, penalties, and an inability to execute important plays at the key moments.  During a season when both the college football and Pac-10 have been turned on their ear, more than ever, teams that look bad one week can step up and play like gangbusters the next.

"Everybody in the conference has played well this year," said safety Brandon Hampton, who made a big fumble recovery late in the first quarter and finished with five tackles. "It's not like 2003 or 2004 where you could look at the schedule and know who you'll beat.  If you don't come out hot, you'll be behind at the end."

In a surprise, UCLA was successful in controlling the line of scrimmage and both ends of the field.  The Bruins were able to run up the heart of the Cal defense, gaining 183 yards, most of them coming from Kahlil Bell, who had 142 yards on 22 carries.   UCLA's defensive team speed was responsible for helping the Bruins limit the Bears to 67 yards rushing, holding Pac-10 rushing leader to 76 yards in the process.

"That was a very rewarding football game to see our players play as well as they played and to hang in there for a 60-minute fight," said UCLA head coach Karl Dorrell afterwards. "Our defense made some big plays. We eliminated most of Cal's big plays...We weren't perfect, but it was a good enough game to show what our capabilities are.  This was our best game in terms of playing a high-caliber game."

Although the loss was just by nine points, there was a sense that it could have been worse.

"We got lucky with turnovers," said linebacker Zack Follett, about UCLA's two lost fumbles.  "It was a real gut-check time for us. But if we didn't get the turnovers, the score would have been worse."

Quarterback Nate Longshore started off well, but was hurt by three second-half interceptions. Yet with just under two minutes left, with the Bears down 23-21 thanks to a 54-yard kickoff return by Jahvid Best, Cal was driving in UCLA territory. Two Justin Forsett runs gave Cal a 3rd-and-5 from the UCLA 30.  As Longshore stepped back and saw wide receiver DeSean Jackson running an out pattern. Longshore tried to rifle his pass into Jackson, but UCLA's Verner jumped the pattern, intercepted the ball an returned it for a touchdown.

"It was a good play by him," said Longshore who finished 22-of-34 for 232 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. "He went where he needed to get to ball."

Whereas two weeks ago, Cal could openly think about its chances for the national championship and a BCS Bowl, with two losses, they Bears will likely finish the weekend tied for fifth-place in the Pac-10 with Oregon State, behind undefeated Arizona State and UCLA, and behind 1-loss USC and Oregon. In terms of the bowl picture, that tentatively puts them in Emerald Bowl/Las Vegas Bowl area of the conference pecking order which is a mammoth drop for a team that last week was just a play away from a possible #1 ranking.

The Bears opened the scoring with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Longshore to tight end Craig Stevens, where the junior quarterback did a nice job of looking off the defense to the left before throwing to Longshore who was streaking up the field.  UCLA responded with a 32-yard field goal, and a 2-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Cowan to Logan Paulsen to take a 10-7.

The touchdown pass to Paulsen came off a 60-yard run by Kahlil Bell on a counter where the play initially went right, the Bear defense overpursued while the Bruin line gave him a lane. While safety Thomas DeCoud made a terrific effort to tackle Bell at the 2, the Bruins scored on the next play.

"The defense slanted and the Will position blitzed leaving an empty gap," said Follett. "They caught us a bad situation."

Cal took the lead shortly thereafter on a 39-yard touchdown pass from Longshore to Jackson.

One of the better looking offensive plays the Bears have run all season, Longshore faked to tailback James Montgomery, who went in to the line, then faked the end around to Lavelle Hawkins, who came from the left side and continued into the play as a receiver.   In the meantime, Jackson, who initially slowed to make UCLA think it was a run, ran past UCLA's Trey Brown and was wide open when he made the catch, giving the Bears a 14-13 lead.

The Bears let a couple of opportunities slip away from them late in the 2nd half.   On a first-and-10 from the UCLA 20, Jahvid Best fumbled a pitchout.

On UCLA's subesequent drive, they marched deep into Bear territory when a screen pass from Pat Cowan to Joe Cowan was completed then stripped away by Worrell Williams.   The ball was stripped away with such force that it turned into a 16-yard loss.   As the ball was rolling away, a UCLA player was about to jump on the ball when Hampton tackled the player, preventing him from getting the ball, then leapt on it himself.  Cal went on a short drive, keyed by a 17-yard completion from Longshore to Jackson on 3rd-and-15 from the UCLA 44.  However, the subsequent 44-yard field goal attempt by Jordan Kay was wide to the left.

While the Bears have been persistent with the run, even plays that it appeared Forsett might break for long runs were quickly shut down by Bruin defenders. Going into first half with a 14-13 lead, Cal could be heartened knowing that Longshore was a sharp 16-of-19 for 173 yards in the first half; yet had to be concerned that Forsett had just 32 yards in 12 carries.

The referees were not allowing much contact between the wide receivers and the defensive backs. There were six pass interference penalties called in the first half, with two of them being declined.

Hampton was called for two of them in the first half, but also drew an offensive pass interference call from Terrence Austin in the second half.

"He did push off on me and they gave me the call there," said Hampton, who didn't agree with the two calls against him, but didn't think they were responsible for Saturday's loss. "We're just out there playing hard and the refs'll make calls. All we can do is just go out there and play."

The Bruins took a 20-14 lead early in the second half with a little trickery when on a 1st-and-10 from the Cal 29, wide receiver Brandon Breazell took to ball on an end around from the left side and through a high arching pass towards wide receiver Dominique Johnson.  Safety Thomas DeCoud raced over in front of Johnson and raised his hands. While DeCoud was careful to not make contact, he also was unable to turn around to face to play.  The ball sailed just over DeCoud's hands, into Johnson's arms for a touchdown.

With the Bears down six, the offense had a 3-and-out, and had a possession that started in UCLA end on an interception when Verner stepped in front of Hawkins for his first interception.

Cal was at that point in not just the game, but also in its season, where they   desperately needed to take ahold of the situation by the scruff of its neck and let not just UCLA, but the conference, and college football know just how good this team is.   And damned if Follett, didn't try to step up.

While playing through assorted injuries this season, Follett's been limited to selected situations, while Justin Moye and Michael Mohamed have been getting more time on the field.  Sensing the moment slipping away, he'd had it with just being in there on 3rd downs and other passing situations.

"I told the coaches that I wanted to get in there," said Follett.   "I was getting frustrated. I wasn't getting all the reps that I usually get in practice, but I needed to get out there."

On a three-play sequence starting at the UCLA 23, Bell was about to race around the right end for a big gain, when followed dove at him and tripped him for a 1-yard gain.   Then a strong rush by Tyson Alualu forced Cowan to thrown an incompletion.  On 3rd-and-9 from the Bruin 23, Cowan attempted a short pass to Bell, but Follett reached back to knock it down.

On the ensuing position, it seemed like the Bears had finally arisen. Their 11-play, 67-yard touchdown drive was punctuated by consecutive gains of 15, 16, and 15 yards on passes to Jackson, LaReylle Cunningham and Forsett.  On 3rd-and-goal from the UCLA 2, Longshore floated a pass to the right back corner of the end zone despite contact from Brown, for Jackson's second touchdown of the game.

Although Jackson got the ball, there was no official call and a penalty flag.   After a long conference, the refs indicated that Brown had committed pass interference and the touchdown was good.

"They bracketed me a lot," said Jackson who finished with 9 catches for 136 yards and two touchdowns. "On that play they did a good job. There was nowhere else Nate could have thrown it, and he threw a good ball."

Up 21-20, the Bears desperately needed to put UCLA away. Setting aside the rankings at this point in the season, this year's Bears aren't like the 2004 and 2006 editions that would just come out and destroy opponents and let the reserves lots of playing time in the second half.  Everything for this team's been a fight and in some cases (Oregon) it works out, and others (Oregon State) it doesn't.

The maligned defense stepped up twice to stop UCLA, but this time the offense couldn't get untracked.

UCLA chose not to go for it on 4th-and-1 from the Cal 38, drawing strong booing from the Rose Bowl crowd, and took a delay of game before punting.

"I didn't want to make a mistake," said Dorrell. "It was longer than fourth and one - it was about fourth and one and a half. I just didn't want to put ourselves in a bad position there.  You can get a chance to put them in their of the field and make them drive to score some points  We were down by one at the time.   We didn't nail the punt like we wanted to, but our defense came through and protected ourselves."

The Bears managed a first down on the subsequent drive, but a holding call put them with a 2nd-and-18 from their 27.  The Bears followed that up with two Justin Forsett runs that netted 8 yards and were forced to punt.

UCLA had four plays and then a punt, but a holding penalty on the punt put the Bears back on their 11, where they promptly went three-and-out again.

Another punt put the ball on the UCLA 48, where the Bruins went on an 11-play, 42-yard drive, climaxed by a 24-yard field goal by Kai Forbath to give the Bruins a 23-21 lead.

On the following kickoff, Best reversed field, returning the ball 54-yards to the UCLA 35.  Two Forsett runs gave Cal a 3rd-and-five from the UCLA 30.

The Bears were in a position where they could have tried running the ball, and taken their chances with a long field goal try, tried a pass - up to this point, Longshore was 7-of-11 on 3rd down passing, or considered this four-down territory and expanded their options.

"We really needed another first down before we would have been in field goal position," said Tedford.

Then came Longshore's ill-fated pass to Jackson that resulted in Verner's touchdown.

"We'd like to have that last one back," said Tedford. "[Verner]   made a great play. Nate thought he had an opening so he threw it. It's an unfortunate play."

Down nine, the Bears had one last gasp, but a 4th-and-10 pass for Hawkins was intercepted by Dennis Keyes, sealing the Bears second defeat of the season.

"It was 4th down and I was trying to make a play," said Longshore. "I tried to put it high but it didn't get there. You don't want to be caught holding the ball in that situation."

The question is, besides back to Berkeley, where the Bears go from here.  While the national championship and the Pac-10 title are goals that can be aimed at all season long, what happens when the chances for those are suddenly reduced to being somewhere between winning Super Lotto and ending up on Jessica Alba's speed dial?

"It's hard," said Lavelle Hawkins, who finished with three catches for 25 yards. "But just as much as you take winning, you have to take your losses. You just can't hang your head. We had a few plays that didn't go our way...Everybody's down, but we're going to bounce back. We've got five or six games left. We'll bounce back...We know we're not going to the national championship, but we still have bowl games to shoot for."

"This tells us that we've got to work harder," said left tackle Mike Gibson. "With one loss, we thought that we could still get it done, but now it's out of our hands."

Tedford is insistent that Saturday's loss won't change anything as far as team goals go.

"Our goal has always been to win the next week," said Tedford. "We've stumbled but now we have to regroup. We still have our goals. We want to win football games. We never talk about long-term goals That philosophy will not change.

Although Saturday's loss won't go down easy, Tedford's not concerned that this game will have a lasting effect on this team.

"I'm not concerned about their psyche," said Tedford. "We've got strong character, and I think they'll come back and we'll have an opportunity against Arizona State."

With Arizona State being undefeated, ranked, and in the top 10, it means that Cal's role not just switches from being that of the hunted to that of the hunter, but also an angry, pissed-off, aggravated hunter that by Saturday, won't have eaten in four weeks.

Notes...Julian Arthur and John Allen made their first career starts...Marcus Ezeff didn't start but was in the game for a few plays...Saturday's game was UCLA's biggest non-USC crowd since the 84,983 attended the UCLA-Arizona game on November 12, 2005....Anthony Felder and Zack Follett each had 10 tackles, followed by Sy'd Quan Thompson's 9 tackles...For UCLA, Christian Taylor and Dennis Keyes each had 10 tackles...Patrick Cowan was 18-of-27 for 161 yards and one touchdown for the Bruins...The Bruins attempted a short kickoff towards Cameron Jordan who's one of the two up men in front of Jahvid Best and Lavelle Hawkins. Jordan was hit hard for no return but held onto the ball.  On subsequent kickoffs, Matt Russi was the up man who was paired with Shea McIntrye.
