Kevin Morrison Interview, Part 1

Kevin Morrison is the latest addition to the California women's basketball staff, joining the Bears as an assistant coach in June this year. Previously, Morrison was the head of West Coast Elite, one of the most successful AAU programs in the country.

Morrison sat down with the Bear Insider for a lengthy interview. In this first of two parts, he speaks about his basketball and coaching journey, what brought him to Cal, and his commitment to the development of young people.

Bear Insider: To start with, tell me about your decision to move from AAU to college coaching.

Kevin Morrison: Well, I began coaching AAU seven years ago and I really enjoyed it. I really loved the interactions with the players, who were more driven than say your typical high school athlete. But then one day at a tournament, I looked across the court and though, "I really enjoy what I'm doing here, but what do I do to get over there to the other side?" So then I met some coaches along the way and got some great advice about how to build my own resume and just stayed diligent with it. I knew it was going to be a process and it wasn't going to be overnight; it was going to take me a minimum of five years to establish myself. So I just kept my head down and went to work and did the best I could do for the players in my organization at the time. And so along the way there were some offers that came about and in the last three years. Some offers that I took under serious consideration-- some good places, but I just thought that I was in position where I could choose to be a little greedy about where I want to go. I told coach Boyle may be eight months to a year ago that if there ever was an opportunity that opened up here, please call me because I would really like to coach here and she's someone that I would love to learn from and work with and work for. And she was actually a reference me for other jobs that I had thought about. So when she called me and said the opening was there and told me about the whole interview process and what it would entail, I was ecstatic. So when she offered me the job, it was a no-brainer for me.

But before you could start, there were all these compliance issues because of your position in AAU…

Oh definitely. There were a ton of compliance issues that had to be taken care of. And so those are things that I had to make sure that had to get done before I can begin here. I checked with the compliance officer here. I checked with the NCAA office and got a check-off list from them and just went down the list and in addition to just packing boxes.

You were the owner of your organization, West Coast Elite…

Owner and head coach.

Right. Was the transition from being the top person—the owner and head coach—to being someone who's an assistant difficult?

It was a role I gladly accepted. Previous to being a coach, I was a social worker. At times I was a social worker and high school coach, or a social worker and an AAU coach, or while coaching both boys and girls, I was also a high school guidance counselor. And so I was always worked on teams, and I always worked my way up from the bottom. So that was no problem for me. And I'm in the position where I want to learn. I know that I am nowhere close being a finished product. Joanne is one of the best coaches in the country and getting the chance to learn from her… and looking at Coach [Lindsay]Gottlieb and [former Assistant] Coaches Hairston and Mendes and what they've gained, it was it an easy decision for me. This is where I want to be. I want to learn, I want to walk in those footsteps. So being the boss is not anywhere close to a priority for me.

What was the first time that you and Joanne first met?

It was day two of her being here at Cal. Or maybe not day two, but it was very shortly after she took the job. Actually the person I met first was Lindsay at a recruitment event in Virginia, shortly after they were announced. Then I spoke to Joanne a couple of days afterwards, and we were talking about her incoming players, which was the class with Alexis, Devanei, Shantrell, and Ashley. And she was just trying to get a pulse on not just California but the West Coast—who were the key influential people: high school coaches, AAU coaches, and which players to recruit. It was a great chance for me to get to know her, and so we continued those conversations on the regular basis. She's very easy to talk to, and so as I got to know her, I got to see a personal side of her as well.

Backtrack a little for me. How did you get started playing basketball? And then how did you get interested in social work?

Played basketball since I could walk. Ever since I could crawl, I'm sure my parents have pictures of me in with a basketball in my hands. Went on to play basketball in high school in LaVerne. Went on to the University of San Diego and played for two years there. Then my playing career was finished at that point in time, and I just focused on life after college. I had to make a decision about not only as a young man, it was time to start maturing and growing up, but also about a career, so I changed my major to social work, and actually eventually changed universities and graduated from Cal Poly Pomona. And from there it was like this is what I was called to do was social work and help people. It was probably 1997 when I first took a boy's coaching job. It was a varsity boys' job, and I was kind reluctant to do so because I had never coached before, and here I was ahead of coach of the varsity team. It was really good, but at the same time I was in grad school and finishing my masters in social work, and I felt like I had a different mission out there. While I still loved basketball and loved sports, I looked at social work as my career, my calling, and basketball was something I do for fun. I couldn't see doing both at first. But shortly thereafter I got involved in AAU, and it was like oh, I can do both after all. And even though I left social work in 2001, those same principles I still use everyday.

You mean that you are able to apply principles you learned as a social worker into your work as a coach? What experiences in particular have helped to prepare you as a coach?

At one point, I worked in a group home. I had two different types of job in the field of social work. One was that I was in a group home for juvenile delinquents aged 13 to 17—all boys and all kids who had been at in and out of juvenile hall. So I dealt with all kinds of truancy, kids in gangs, violent backgrounds. Grand theft auto, those are pretty normal for my group of kids. There were 165 kids in a group home. The social work model is different than psychiatry or psychology model in that we wanted teach you to help yourself. And so even if it was just basic social skills or life skills. Principles of natural and logical consequences, work ethic, teamwork. It wasn't uncommon for us to have kids who were roommates from rival gangs, but that has got to put aside for a common goal here. Not that you have to have to be best friends, but to be able to respect one another's differences and to me to be up to move forward from that to work together, and these things that you can carry on down the road in life, with a teacher in high school or a professor in college or a boss in the real world. I also worked in a home for emancipated youth, for students who were 18 and who graduated from the program but who didn't have a parent to go home to. So lots of hands-on life skills with those kids—how to look for an apartment, how to apply for a job. So all those experiences taught me a lot of patience. And as a coach, when conflicts would arise with my teams, I felt very well-equipped to handle those issues after having dealt with kids who have been gangs in such.

Well, compared to all that, this coaching thing must be a piece of cake.

No kidding.

A lot of whatyou said really resonated with me, because I'm an elementary school principal in East Oakland, and many of our students, if we don't take hold of them now, they might end up at places like where you used to work. So it's all about teaching them not only academics, but also guiding principles, to keep them focused on what they need to do to stay on the right path.

At some point in time along that path, some kids get detached from what we used to call the pro-social institutions in your community, which are your family, your school, your church… Sports are very pro-social. And getting kids re-connected to things which are pro-social, they get that same feeling of value and worth and so forth, which is different from the high you get stealing a car or whatever. That feeling that comes from "Hey, I'm part of a team, and we won," or "I got elected to student government." If they get detached from a group, you have to replace that with another group and teach them about this new group and what's positive about it.

You have to give kids something to fight for, something they don't want to lose.

Exactly. One of the greatest things was that I was walking up Bancroft a few weeks ago, and I heard a male voice call out my name. I turned around and he said his name and then I looked at him and thought, "God, your face looks familiar, and your name is just right here, I just can't…" Then he said, "I graduated from your group home in 1994." And I said, "Wow! Really? What are you doing here?" And he said that he now works here at Cal Berkeley. That was one of the best feelings ever, just knowing that there were students that I taught out there who are successful. He's 27 now, and he's been living in the community and working in the community, and he's been successful.

People like him are those I'd like to bring to our school to speak to my kids, to let them know that we all have choices. And that's it's never too late to make better choices and turn your life around. We want our students to attach to something or someone, whether it be a teacher or an after-school program, or something in the community.

Absolutely, I'll give you his name so you guys can connect on this. You know, the group home where he was, it was in 325 acres in nature. We also had kept it as a community, and he was involved in student government. When we say student government we're not talking about ASB as one would think; it's more like running a town. And he was involved in several branches of the government in his time there.

In Part 2: Morrison talks about recruiting and his transition from AAU basketball.
