Kevin Morrison Interview, Part 2

Kevin Morrison is the latest addition to the California staff, joining the Bears as an assistant coach in June this year. Previously, Morrison was the head of West Coast Elite, one of the most successful AAU programs in the country.

Before becoming a basketball coach, Morrison had worked as a social worker, a job that he felt prepared him well for working with young athletes (see Part 1). Here he speaks about how he built a successful AAU program and what he hopes to contribute to the Cal basketball staff.

BearInsider: You sound so committed to social work. Why did you want to start your own AAU program?

Kevin Morrison: I've always been a driven person and I like having ownership of things. I started by working with another program, and I just thought, "Hey this is great!" But you know, I can start my own program and still serve kids. I can do things that everybody else is doing, but do it my own way. So it was just a sense of pride thing; I want to start my own program. I'll take bits and pieces from all around and to incorporate it into my own style. And I really loved it.

You built one of the most successful programs around—West Coast Elite.

Well see, people define success differently. When I began with AAU, my biggest thing was when it's all said and done at the end of year, I don't think anybody is going to care about my record. I don't think anyone is going to care that we were 55 and 2 or 55 and 25 for that matter, or tha I won this tournament or that tournament. I think what for me defined success was when you go on our website, when you look at the alumni page, do you see kids who are going to college? And that me for success is. I didn't care what anyone else thought outside of our program, because that was how I defined success. And there were some kids that I firmly believed would not have had that opportunity to get a free education, and whether that be at Division I school or an NAIA school. A free education is a free education, and some kids I know, I firmly believe that had it not been for the services that our program provided (not just myself), that they would not have had the opportunity. So for me, that's how I define success, much more than how many plaques and trophies I have on the wall. There were some tournaments we never won, and others we won every year, so I stopped defining myself based on what tournaments you win. At the time, from start to finish, every kid who came to the program, who graduated as a senior got a scholarship. There was not one kid that did not go to a four-year institution. And that for me was how I defined success.

The top AAU programs would draw players from different states to come play for them. How did you recruit players for your program?

The same time that I started my own program, I started a scouting service—I started two businesses within three days of each other. So I spent 14 to 18 days every month from mid-September to March on the road scouting and identifying top players. And then I produced a report, a quarterly, that again, started from the bottom. No one knew who we were. We started with 28 universities that very first year. And last year there were 92, so in three years it tripled. So I knew about players, by virtue of me going to tournaments in high school games and practices and building relationships with high school coaches, AAU coaches, and even college coaches who would recommend players to me. And I was fortunate enough that I was able to see kids because that was my business. Grassroots sports was my business, and I was able to utilize that to go out and scout. So that's typically how I found players.

There's a discussion out there about AAU, that while the system succeeds in providing exposure for players, it's not helping players to develop skills.

I firmly believe that it does both. I think there are a number of great coaches out there who are doing everything that they can with the kids in their program to get them maximum exposure. Doing all kinds of different fundraisers and things to get players to tournaments and get them in front of college coaches. Obviously, once you get in front of them, to play you have to perform. So that's where the training portion of it comes in. But the major difference between the AAU and the high school coaches is that typically the AAU coach only has two to four hours a week with their players. And that may be stretched out; it may not be consistent. You may have only one practice on Saturday for three hours to get everything in--how do you get everything in: out-of-bounds plays, offense, defense, in addition to skill development, working on the left-hand, working on post moves, whatever it may be. And I think there are coaches out there who get creative with their time management, and they find ways to do it. So it can be a benefit for the players that go through the AAU system, because you go to your high school program and you get a particular style, and then you go to your AAU coach and he or she may be different so you learn something new there, and so you're picking up new skills and drills that you can do on your own. And the level of play is generally higher. So I think both systems benefit from one another actually.

You used to work teenagers, and now you work more with young women. So going back to what you said before about working with emancipated youth. In many ways college is…

Emancipation.

Exactly. How is it working with a different age group than what you've been used to?

Well, when I started with AAU, I was fortunate to be around such driven kids, both on the court and in the classroom. We have the same players here but they're 18 to 22 years old. So it's refreshing to see those skills that we talked about earlier, like time management. How do you manage carrying 12 to 16 units a semester and you have 20 hours of practice and get to work on your own outside of practice to get better. You're lifting weights, you're doing conditioning, you have to have time to deal with the family, you are breaking down film, you have position meetings with your coaches… so for college athletes to manage all of that, it's great teaching because that's what the real world is all about.

In what other ways has this been a transition? Anything you found surprising so far?

I've always known that coaching at this level takes a special person. One who loves what they do, is dedicated to the sport, to their university, to their head coach. But because I've never really walked in their shoes. I mean, I knew they worked hard, and that they put and tireless hours. But I just didn't know what all that entailed. So while I knew in general the different responsibilities, I didn't know the specifics. Because sometimes the perception is what you see on TV or during a game on court, or you see the coaches on the sidelines or on the bench, but you don't see all the preparation prior to that. You don't see a coach who's making sure that the players are enrolled in the right classes so that they can be on course to graduate. You don't see the position work, you don't see the strength and conditioning coach or the trainer, who is working with them to make sure that they are healing properly. You don't see them meetings that we have over brick and down the scouting reports a how much time goes into that, to scout opponents and come up a game plan, or how much time just to coordinate travel. So all of those things. It takes a team to get this done. So I just had no idea what a normal day was like. But it's been great, everyday I've learned something new.

What are your major responsibilities this year?

My major responsibilities would include recruiting, would include assisting students of housing, logging in compliance picking sure that we're in compliance with XP phone calls, working with the post players with Lindsay [Gottlieb]. Those are my major duties, along with the duties that we all share.

Let's talk about recruiting: literally one day you're on the sidelines, and the next day you're in the stands. What did that feel like, to go from coaching recruits to recruiting them?

That was something that along this process over the last couple of years, I had to think to myself, "Can I do this? Can I deal with this, how will I feel?" The first experience was this summer in Oregon City. We went to the tournament to go scout, and my former team was playing in the tournament. I wasn't nervous; I was happy for them. I sat in the bleachers and watched them walk in the door, I watched their mannerisms and then just watched them play, and it was different, because now that I was not coaching them, I can see the different things that you don't pick up on the sidelines, just seeing them in a different light. But it was difficult, because the relationship with them is now in a different role. But I had spoken to them individually about that before I announced my decision to leave to them, so the first time I saw them play, I just sat there and really smiled. I was happy that they were continuing on, that they got a new coach, and they did not miss a beat. They were still doing what they needed to do, and I was happy about that.

What about your relationship to the other college coaches now? I mean, they used to come to you, and now…

My phone never rings now!

Feeling a little lonely? Not as popular as we used to be?

I'm okay with that. Coaches used to get on me, because my voicemail box would easily fill up every day. And I had 125 messages limit . I couldn't answer them as fast as they were coming in, and so coaches were calling me for scouting services or for specifically about the team I was coaching. And when people looked at the team that I coached, what they didn't realize was that there was one team that was in the spotlight, but there were eight teams that I was responsible for. So there were 80 kids and 80 sets of parents to respond to, and 92 coaches for the scouting services, so it got to be a bit much. So when I started here, and it's like, "A few voicemails a day… hmm, not bad." But seriously, my day is just as busy, if not busier than it used to be, just in different ways. But all the coaches have been really supportive of me from day one. I've developed friendships with a bunch of them across the country and a number of them have really helped me in this process. I've gotten a chance to sit with them while recruiting and just talk to them about how to handle this, what mistakes they've made along the way, so it's all been very helpful. And of course I've gotten a bunch of help from Joanne, from Lindsay, and from Charmin. But during that month of July, during the recruiting period, you get a chance to talk to a bunch of people from different universities.

Is it still unusual for an AAU coach to join the college ranks?

Just this year, and I don't want to leave anyone out, but off the top of my head, George Porcha from Boo Williams is now at Virginia Tech. Keith Brown, formerly of the Fairfax Stars, he now coaches for Georgetown. A couple years back, Mike Bozeman had a team in Washington, DC, and now he's at George Washington. But it is still relatively new, still relatively unusual.

The perception is that an AAU coach would give a college program an advantage when it comes to recruiting. Why hasn't this occurred more often?

It's much more prevalent on the men's side, and I'm no expert by any means about men's basketball, but I know that it's much more commonplace for the men. But I think that it's an opportunity that should be open to the high school coaches as well as AAU coaches, and if what happened to me can open doors for others, then that's phenomenal.

Charmin Smith is now the recruiting coordinator, and she mentioned that she believes that you and your background will help offset any loss of recruiting momentum that usually occurs when there is turnover in the coaching staff.

Charmin has not only coached at Stanford, but she's played at the highest level. She's played in the WNBA. She's played overseas. She went to three Final Fours while at Stanford. She has so much experience that she can give to our team and to future prospects. You combine that with the fact that she was in contact with players at some point while she was at Stanford, and I was in contact with some players just through my relationships with my former job. Honestly those contacts that Charmin had carried with her to Cal, and the contacts I had carried with me to Cal, it's all a plus for Cal. It's a win-win. We are working as diligent as we can to find the right student athletes to fit into our system and to help us be more successful here. We are right there. We are on the cusp

Anything else you'd like us to know?

I've always liked new challenges in life & don't like to stay in my comfort zone for too long. I spent 7 years in AAU/Travel Ball, and it was time for a new challenge as well as a time for growth, both professionally and personally. Cal offered exactly what I was looking for and thus far has been everything that I imagined it would be and more. It was definitely a great decision to come to Cal, and I am thankful about the opportunity.

Thank you, Kevin. Welcome to Cal.
