Cal Vanquishes Vandy, 67-59

Rama N'diaye capped off a great weekend by notching 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks to lead the No. 12/13 California Golden Bears over No. 23/18 Vanderbilt. Coming on the heels of her 16-point and 18-rebound effort against St. Mary's, the 6'5 sophomore center from Senegal was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2007 Contra Costa Times Classic.

"I didn't expect it," said N'diaye of the honor. "I'm so happy."

The Bears improved to 7-1 while dropping the Commodores to 7-2.

Ashley Walker had a game-high 17 points and nine rebounds, while Alexis Gray-Lawson contributed 16 points.

Vanderbilt was led by Merideth Marsh's 12 points and Jennifer Risper's nine points and nine rebounds.

"I thought the kids did a great job of executing the game plan," said Cal head coach Joanne Boyle. "We spent yesterday's practice and this morning's shoot-around just working on the scouting report defense—what we were taking away from them, and what we were willing to give up. Vandy's a great team. It's tough to come in and play back-to-back games. But we just played percentage defense, and it worked out."

"We came out flat," said Vanderbilt head coach Melanie Balcomb. "We haven't played well yet on the road, and then to play a ranked team on the road. I know we just played last night, but I felt that we subbed enough, and I felt prepared. Then we went out and did not play with the effort and the energy we needed."

Vanderbilt came into the game shooting over 50 percent from the field as a team but was held to 24% (7 of 29) in the first half and 33% (20 of 60) for the game.

"We didn't make shots," said Balcomb. "The kids who usually make shots took them, and didn't make them."

"I think we came out hesitant," said Vanderbilt forward Christina Wirth. "I think that part of it was that the shots we usually make weren't falling. We got a little tight on offense, so that puts pressure on your defense to get stops."

The Commodore defense did not manage many stops in the first half, as the Bears went on a 15-2 run to earn a double-digit lead (17-7) as Ashley Walker stole the ball and then got it back from Gray-Lawson for a fast-break lay-up. It was one of only field goals for Walker in the half, as she and Wirth canceled each other out with tough defense. Christina Wirth, the Commodores' leading scorer, was held to one basket while picking up 3 fouls in the first half.

"We were trying to be aggressive," said Wirth. "Just trying to limit their post players' touches on the real low blocks. In pushing them out, we just got some hand-checks. We just needed to adjust to the reffing earlier than we did."

The Bears' defense also focused on Commodore center Liz Sherwood, who was shooting at 75% from the floor. Sherwood hit all three of her shots, but she did not get many touches.

"We were giving threes, but we were willing to do that to not let Sherwood touch the ball," said Boyle. "Rama did an unbelievable job on Sherwood, playing the way we asked her to. She was just a great defensive presence, and the guards helped out."

"They had a good game plan. I think they were playing a sagging man for most of the game," said Sherwood. "We haven't seen that a lot, so I think it kind of confused us."

Sherwood played only seven minutes in the first half after picking up two fouls trying to keep up with Walker and N'diaye.

"They're the best post players we've seen this year," said Balcomb. "They don't just have one. Both those post players are extremely talented. And then they have another post player who can step on the perimeter, so it's a really good combination."

Vanderbilt finally hit a couple of three pointers to stay within reach, but then the Bears closed the half with a 14-4 run. Gray-Lawson cut the hoop and muscled in lay-up. Kelsey hit a three for her only points of the game. Natasha Vital found N'diaye on a pick and roll, then hit a three pointer of her own on a kick-out by Lauren Greif. Greif then hit two free throws.

But the story of the half was N'diaye, who played perhaps her best half of basketball in a Bear uniform. She picked up 10 points and 7 rebounds, but more importantly, played a clean floor game, minimizing the mistakes—offensive fouls, over-the-backs, turnovers—that have often plagued her. She committed only one foul, on a tough block attempt, and often she seemed to tower over the Dores on the boards. N'diaye did not rush her footwork on offense, and she shot the ball with confidence. When she hit a jumper off glass to close the scoring in Cal's favor (36-19), N'diaye left for the locker to a standing ovation.

In the second half, the two teams traded baskets, with Vital and Gray-Lawson driving to the hoop for the Bears. Gray-Lawson then hit a pull-up trey, and when Walker hit two free throws, Cal had its largest lead of the game at 47-25.

"Second half, we played Tina [Wirth] at the three-guard to try to get another shooter on the perimeter, and for rebounding," said Balcomb. "We played pretty much three posts because we were being killed on the boards."

But when Vanderbilt began to chip away at the lead, it was with the help of their perimeter game. Merideth Marsh and Lauren Lueders hit consecutive threes. N'diaye responded with a turnaround jumper and a pull-up from just inside the free-throw line. But a strong drive by Jennifer Risper led to two free throws, and Wirth followed with a lay-up. Two more threes by Jessica Mooney and Risper, and suddenly, Vandy had the momentum, down only 11 (54-43) with just under six minutes left.

"Down the stretch, we picked up full-court, in two different defenses, to try to pick up the pressure," said Balcomb.

Perhaps the press wore out the Bears, as they began to miss a series of free-throws. After another trey by Lueders, the Bears' lead had dwindled down to only two possessions at 63-57, with 36 seconds to play. The Commodores then committed to force the Bears to win it at the line.

Vital promptly missed both of her free-throws, but Walker slid inside for an offensive board to earn the Bears an extra possession. Walker made two free-throws, then blocked Wirth three-point attempt with 16 seconds left. Greif and Vital then split their free-throws, and the Bears closed out their 67-58 win, their first over a ranked non-conference opponent under Joanne Boyle.

"I think it's a great win," said Boyle. "To have a top-25 team come on to your home floor… if you look at the [NCAA] Tournament, what [the Selection Committee is] looking for, they want you to play top 25 teams, home and away. I think this win is a great statement to the committee."

"I think this shows that we can play with anyone in the nation," said Gray-Lawson. "So I think this definitely brought up our confidence. Now we head to New York to play Princeton and Rutgers. So next week, we'll prepare for them and do the best that we can."

Despite the big win and the cross-country road trip ahead, after the game, talk centered around N'diaye and the progress she's made this year.

"I call her RamStar, because she's such a star," added Walker. "She's a beast. I'm always telling her, ‘Be a beast,' and she just goes and gets every rebound. And last year, with her learning English—‘What, that's your fourth language now, Ram?' But this year, she knows what she wants to do, and she's just doing it."

"Last year, I felt that I didn't understand what coach was saying to me," laughed N'diaye.

"I think it's her confidence," said Gray-Lawson when asked what the difference has been with N'diaye this season. "With Devanei out, she's been doing an unbelievable job, and I'm really proud of her."

"The player you're seeing now is the player I saw in Japan," said Boyle. "It was hard last year for her. She hadn't been home in four years, playing in a foreign country. Then she comes here, and we play up-tempo basketball, and we're throwing words at her. She came off the bench, and she never had the time to play through anything, because she played behind two dominant post players. But she's a bright bright student, and now she's picking up things very easily. She's becoming very coachable.

"I think the best thing about this team is that last year, Tasha [Vital] was the one who had to step up, and now Rama has to. It says a lot about this team's character—they always find a way. For whatever reason, they're just not going to let each other down. It's interesting that we've been put in this situation in back-to-back years, but some ways, Tasha was our MVP last year, and in these last few games, Rama's been that person for us. So that's nice to see."

NOTES:

• With the victory, Cal now has a 28-game home non-conference winning streak. The Bears have won their own tournament 5 consecutive years.

• It was the second game in a row that Cal has shown good offensive balance. "We're harder to scout, we're harder to defend when we share the basketball," said Boyle. "I think it's a real lesson for us, because at Baylor, we forced so may looks to Ashley. Today, she ends up with her points anyway, and everybody else gets theirs as well. So I think it was really good for the team to stay with the game plan and move the ball a lot more."

• Natasha Vital had 6 assists to lead the Bears. Cal had 16 assists to 15 turnovers, the first time this season the Bears had finished with a positive in the assists column.

• With her first basket, Walker moved past Heli Toikka (1983-1986) into 12th place for most points scored in the history of California women's basketball. Walker now has 1118 points. Next up: No. 11 Leigh Gregory (2002-2005), who scored 1136 points.

• Walker and Gray-Lawson joined N'diaye on the All-Tournament Team, along with Christina Wirth and Jen Risper from Vanderbilt and Serena Benavente of St. Mary's.

• The Bears shot 56% for the game, their best of the year. N'diaye was 8 of 11. Cal also converted 55.6% (5 of 9) from beyond the arc. Conversely, they only hit 53.3% (16 of 30) from the charity stripe, their lowest of the year.

• With the victory over the Commodores, the Bears completed a stretch of five games in 9 days. "It's definitely grueling on the body, but we were excited to play," said Walker. "We're doing what we have to do if we want to be a national-caliber team."

• Boyle indicated that Devanei Hampton will soon begin to practice with the team. "We're going to work her in this week," said Boyle. Hampton had missed all 8 games so far due to surgery to repair her torn meniscus in her right knee. "Once they get Devanei back, they're going to be even better, obviously," said Balcomb, laughing. "But sometimes you need to state the obvious."

• More on N'diaye: Prompted by Boyle, Walker recounted how N'diaye came to her in April and asked what Boyle meant when she told them to "work hard." Boyle laughed, saying that she wished N'diaye had not waited until the end of the season, but added, "She knows now."
