Bears Wallop Wildcats 66-45

Ashley Walker and Devanei Hampton scored at will inside as the No. 9 California Golden Bears hammered Arizona 66-45. The Bears remained atop the Pac-10 as they look forward to their showdown with second-place Stanford next week. Arizona falls to 9-16 (3-11 Pac-10), while Cal is 23-3 and 14-1 in conference.

Walker scored 24 points on 12 of 16 shooting and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Devanei Hampton had 18 points and 10 boards, while Natasha Vital had a career-high 12 assists.

Amina Njonkou and Rheya Neabors each had 10 points for the Wildcats. Njonkou also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Leading scorer Ashley Whisonant was held to five points but had 7 assists.

"I thought we did a really good job on both ends of the floor," said California head coach Joanne Boyle.

"I thought we started the game really well," said Arizona head coach Joan Bonvicini. "The last time we played them, we did a great job on their post players, and their guards really hurt us. And this time the posts beat us, but their guards still take shots that are good for them; they don't force stuff. They're a good team."

The Bears had another slow start, missing their first five attempts. Arizona did not capitalize, scoring only 3 points in the first 5 minutes, hitting only one of their first 10 attempts. After 5 minutes, the Wildcats led 3-2.

"We really anticipated them coming out in a zone," explained Boyle. "And they did not. It caught us off-guard. It was hard to get settled and run the things we wanted to run early."

With the Wildcats playing a one-guard, four-forward line-up, the Bears struggled to shoot over the defense. Consecutive three-pointers by Amina Njonkou and Neabors extended the Arizona lead to 9-4.

"They were a tough match-up problem, because they played their post player at the three position today," said Boyle. "Lexi got into foul trouble because of it."

With Gray-Lawson on the bench with her second foul, the Bears opened up the floor with their passing. Unable to establish down low, Hampton and Walker displayed other aspects of their game. Hampton set up higher and scored on flips and hooks over the front of the rim. Walker used her superior movement without the ball to find open looks under the basket. Together Hampton and Walker scored 12 consecutive Cal points to push Cal into their first lead. When Natasha Vital pulled up for a three, the Bears had completed a 15-3 run.

Iffy Ibekwe's steal and fastbreak basket closed the gap to 22-19, but Vital immediately responded by breaking Arizona's press and jetting past everyone to the hoop. Cal's vaunted defense then took over, holding the Wildcats to one free-throw for the last four and a half minutes of the half. Rama N'diaye intimidated inside, collecting two blocked shots.

"We're very committed to it," said Boyle of the effectiveness of the Bear defense. "Everybody kind of plays a role. With Dev and Ash and Rama, we have a great post rotation inside. Ashley plays much bigger than her height, and with Dev at 6'3" and Rama coming in at 6'5", we can really be really physical inside. We get up pretty well; we block shots. I think it's pretty difficult for people to score down there, and I think our guards do a good job taking away the three. They're just really committed. It's always been the identity of our team, defense and rebounding."

"[The Bears] play a lot of sagging man," said Bonvicini. "So they force you to make decisions. But they also do a really good job of helping each other, and obviously, they control the paint."

Walker put on an offensive clinic, scoring the last eight points of the half on a variety of moves—spin move on the baseline, stepping through the double-team, reverse spin across the lane, and a pretty runner. After her onslaught, Cal was comfortably in the lead at 32-20.

"We had a good game plan—to double down on their posts, and for the first fifteen minutes, we did a pretty good job," said Bonvicini. But from that point on, then Ashley Walker just took over. She just got super aggressive and wanted the ball. She was making her move before we could even get our guard to double team."

"She did a great job," said Boyle of Walker. "I think Ashley was really running the floor well today. We were looking at some quick hitters, and we really rotated the ball and got Ashley some looks where she's capable of scoring."

"I felt that in the beginning, we started off slow," said Walker. "I had gotten two fastbreaks trying to get open and just didn't finish them. So then I did it again and finally hit one, and we just started from there."

For the half, Walker had 16 points, and Hampton collected eight. Each had 7 boards. Cal only had three turnovers and held Arizona to 22% shooting. Vital had nine assists, as the Bears had 12 as a team on 15 made baskets.

"I didn't know I had that many, until Coach told me before we went back out," said Vital. "My post players just finished really well today, and my guards were knocking down shots. I just have to give them credit."

Kelsey Adrian started the second half and quickly hit a pull up jumpshot. Iffy Ibekwe showed her upside by rising above Walker for a basket. Then Vital found Gray-Lawson in the corner for a trey, notching her tenth assist in the process.

Adrian's back screen freed Walker inside for a lay-up and the Bears' post game was off on another dominating run. Hampton hit two free-throws. Vital drew the defense with her hesitation dribble and found Walker wide-open down low. Hampton fumbled the entry pass but stayed composed and scored inside. After much trouble inbounding the ball against ASU, Cal again found success and Walker for quick lay-in. Walker scored again inside, then she proceeded to block Ibekwe on consecutive possessions, and the rout was on.

Hampton then took her turn in the spotlight with a face-up jumper and two power moves inside, bring the lead to 55-30. Hampton then blocked a Wildcat shot without leaving her feet, and Boyle cleared her bench.

"We tried to make some adjustments in the second half," said Bonvicini. "Then Devanei just took over. It's like you pick your own poison."

As an indication of how well they played as a team, the Bears finished with 24 assists on 29 made baskets. In addition the Bears had only 10 turnovers, compared to the 22 they committed against Arizona State two nights ago.

"We're really pleased with the ten," said Boyle. "Just being able to get up 59 shots, you know, those are the things that you try to teach these guys in terms of opportunities to score. If you have 10 more chances to score and you get five of those, that's 10 points. So just working on that and talking about how we have to take care of the ball. That's one of our game goals, and I thought that we did that really well tonight."

After the game, the Bears were asked if they've looked ahead to taking on Stanford.

"They have not even entered my mind," said Boyle of the Cardinal. "During our first year, we would come off a big win and then have a letdown. We've been in that situation before and we know that it's one game at a time, and if we do more than that, we just put ourselves in the position to fail. We haven't even watched any film on them, to be honest. We'll start that tomorrow. Just looking forward to making some adjustments and be the team we can be here at home."

"I think it's going to be a real different game than last time," suggested Bonvicini. "I think both teams are playing really well. Obviously Cal knows they didn't play a very good game over there, and the conference title is on the line, and it's whether Cal is going to win it outright, or they're going to share it. It's going to be a great game."

NOTES: • Vital's assist total is four short of the team record—16 by Eliza Sokolowska. • Hampton's double-double is her third in a row. She now has 23 in her career. • Walker had four blocks as the Bears swatted 9 shots in all. • Amina Njonkou showed why she is one of the best rebounders in the conference. She had seven offensive rebounds against the Cal front line. • Kelsey Adrian played 27 minutes in Boyle's effort to match up with Arizona's size. She had 5 assists to only 1 turnover. • Cal's win is their 16th straight home victory. The school record is 18 in a row. When asked if she was aware of the records, Hampton replied: "We don't think about it. All we do is go out and have fun and play. We don't even know about none of that." • Beyond the Boxscore: Lauren Greif had two points, two rebounds, and three assists. She also set a screen that allowed Vital the space to hit her three in the first half. In the second half, she spotted Walker down low, but instead of passing the ball, she looked away and motioned as if she was about pass the ball around the perimeter. The defense relaxed, allowing Walker to establish even better position, and Greif, who still had the ball, found her with a quick bounce pass for an easy lay-in. • With the big lead, reserves had the opportunity to see some playing time. Shantrell Sneed found Krista Foster posting up, and the senior scored as the crowd erupted. The Bears defense did not slack off. Sneed and N'diaye tied up the ball, then N'diaye drove the lane for a pretty lay-up. Two possessions later, when N'diaye went into her move down low, the bench jumped up and hollered even before the shot left her hand. "It was a good move," said Vital. "And then Mooch hit a three too!" Federico's trey closed out Cal's scoring. • The attendance was 2759.
