Cal advances to Pac-10 final with 65-61 win

One of the more intriguing aspects of sports is that a team can practice, watch film, and learn to react differently and yet find itself in the exact same position they were a year ago.  Whatever a team did in the regular season; how high it finished in the conference and what its national ranking was; all of that becomes meaningless unless a team executes where they were unable to a year ago.

And so at halftime of the semifinals of the Pac-10 Tournament at HP Pavilion in San Jose, 9th-ranked Cal found itself trailing Arizona State 34-33. Just over a year ago, the Bears were on this same court, facing the same opponent, trailing by the same margin at halftime - one point.

But one aspect where the Bears have vastly improved over 2008 is with its fortitude. Cal's overcome numerous slow starts this year to blitz the opposition in the second half, and on Sunday, the Golden Bear defense limited Arizona State to just two field goals in the first nine minutes of the second half to take a 48-38 lead and withstand a late Sun Devil charge before winning 65-61.

For Cal, it lifts their record to 26-5 on the season, and puts them in its first-ever Pac-10 tournament final. It also gives them one more shot against Stanford, which soundly defeated UCLA 78-45 in the other semi-final, in the championship game on Monday night at 7:30 p.m.

"I'm proud of this team," said head coach Joanne Boyle. "It was one of those hard fought games that you play in March and we've had two of them back-to-back and we've been fortunate to come out on top. [I'm] just looking forward to sitting in those stands and actually being the first team in the championship game to find out who we'll be playing."

Arizona State was unable to contain Cal's All-Pac-10 first team tandem of Devanei Hampton and Ashley Walker. Hampton had 19 points and 16 rebounds, 13 of which came in the first half. More importantly, she showed that her Shaq-like free-throw performance against Oregon was simply a bad night, as she made five of six free throws.  Although Walker started slowly, she finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, with most of those coming in the second half.  Additionally, they limited the Sun Devils' post duo of Lauren Lacey and Sybil Dosty to just 5 points and 2 of 12 shooting from the field.

"We didn't box out well in the first half," said Arizona State head coach Charli Turner Thorne. "We were not putting bodies on people and they got a lot of second shots. In the second half California started making more of their first opportunities and we let them get deep seals behind deep in the key. We were also slow on our double teams. But then again, if you let them catch it down deep, doubling won't help you."

One bonus for the Bears was its three-point shooting. The Bears made six three-point shots, which are most they've made in a win since January 19th when they made 10 against Arizona.

"Those were huge," said Boyle. "Tasha hit a few, and Kelsey and Lauren each made crucial baskets for us."

"Today we pinched and sagged," said Turner Thorne. "Our thought being that if they were going to beat us it was going to have to be from the outside...I give California credit for hitting a bunch of big outside shots."

Cal rode three Vital three-point shots in taking a 21-16 when Alexis Gray-Lawson picked up her 2nd foul with 8:38 left in the first half. This put the Bears in a tricky situation for the rest of the half.  It meant that Vital, who hadn't been substituted yet, would have to play out the half along with Grief and Adrian.  While the Bears might have improved their three-point shooting capacity, they'd be without Gray-Lawson's steadying influence.   Although Vital leads the team in assists, its Gray-Lawson's toolbox; her ability to read the pace of the game, understand when to attack and when to pull the ball back out, and an ability to set screens inside that gives the Bears offense its cohesion.

The Sun Devils stormed back by exploiting the quickness of their guards, by using brush screens at the top of the key to penetrate the lane. More often than, by the time they reached the key, the Bears defense was late in getting over, either allowing a field goal, or commiting a foul. Consequently, Arizona State's trio of Briann January, Jill Noe, and Dymond Simon combined for 26 points in the first half, a marked improvement from the previous two games against Cal when they had been held to 26 and 28 points for the whole game.

Four free throws by Noe and a driving lay-up gave the Sun Devils a 34-33 halftime lead.

At halftime, Boyle reiterated the message that she'd given the team earlier.

"We talked about three things," said Boyle. "We talked about transition defense, which I thought we did a really good job for the most part on. We talk about owning the boards and in some ways we are taking care of the ball, but we're not converting, not missing opportunities. Early on we started with that but we got back to what we do bet, [getting] the ball on the inside-outside and attacked pretty well the second half."

Coming out in the second half, the Bears made Arizona State offense work a lot harder. The Sun Devils were forced to take outside shots and they simply weren't falling. By the time Simon hit a mid-key jumper in the second half with 12:31 left in the second half, it was their second field goal (and fourth point) of the second half, out of 11 field goal attempts, with Walker having Roomba'd five of those shots.

Hampton shook off a 2-of-14 start, by making three field goals early in the second half, including one nice shot where she posted her defender on the right block, spun left, then spun back the other way to get off a shot before the defender could react.  A driving lay-up by Vital, two free throws by Rama N'Diaye, a three-pointer by Greif, and a short jumper by Walker gave the Bears a 48-38 lead.

Boyle was happy with Hampton's play.

"She came off a really tough game yesterday," said Boyle. "You guys watch how people play her and she usually has to go against three or four people and she was so ready to play this game. From the start she was there and missed some early shots, but she stepped up to the free throw line and was a different kid at the free throw line today, and I think that's really started to build confidence in the team as well."

Arizona State plays one of the more physical defenses and it's not unusual for some possessions to end up where bodies are flying around like bowling pins. Hampton, who by now has gotten accustomed to rough play in the post, was unfazed.

"They usually set three or four people on Ashley (Walker) and I," said Hampton. "It's pretty hard down there but that's what Ashley and I love. We love contact, the physical play and all we do is capitalize. They foul us, we go to the free throw line, and we make them."

The Bears maintained a steady distance from the Sun Devils with both teams more or less trading baskets, with Cal holding on to a 63-54 lead with 2:08 left.  Whether ASU was buoyed by desperation or whether the heavy minutes logged by Greif, Vital, and Walker were beginning to take their toll, they began a late rally that was similar to Oregon's late charge against the Bears on Saturday.

Reagan Pariseau hit a jumper from the left side, making it 63-56 with 1:09 left. Even though Arizona State was down seven and still two fouls away from putting the Bears in the penalty, they chose not to foul, allowing the Bears to burn time off the clock. Gray-Lawson missed a three-point shot, and ASU's Simon hit a three point shot, making the score 63-59 with 28 seconds left. Vital was subsequently fouled, and made one of her free throws, but Simon raced down court again for a driving lay-up making the score 64-61 with 18 seconds left.

Gray-Lawson was fouled, and made one free throw to put the Bears up 65-61.  The Bears received a scare a short time earlier when Gray-Lawson went down hard and stayed down for a couple of minutes before being helped to her feet.  But instead of going back to bench to get treatment, she jumped up and down a couple of times and ran over to the team huddle and subsequently took the court.

"I fell down wrong and bumped my knee," said Gray-Lawson.  "I'm kind of clumsy. But I took a couple of jumps and I was ready."

Any thoughts about sitting out a possession or two as a precautionary measure?

"I didn't have a choice," said Gray-Lawson with a smile.

And Boyle's reaction when Gray-Lawson came running into the huddle?

"I looked at her and said, 'Ready?'"

Gray-Lawson's free throw put the Bears up four, and it wasn't until Pariseau's off-balance shot cleared the backboard and nearly hit the shot clock (and yes, the officials whistled a deadball, but then again, this wasn't Pauley Pavilion) that the Bears could finally exhale, knowing that in reaching the finals, they've added one more accomplishment to a remarkable season.

As the clock ticked off and the Bears raced onto the court to celebrate, one could tell by their collective expression and by how they applauded the vocal Cal contingent that made the trip, that this wasn't just another win.

"We've probably been talking about getting to this point the whole year," said Gray-Lawson, who finished with 7 points and 3 rebounds.

While it would to have been silly to ask Turner Thorne about who would win a Cal-Stanford final considering that Stanford still had to play UCLA in the semifinal, she was asked, as a coach who's faced Cal three times and Stanford twice, which two were tougher to prepare for, Cal's Hampton and Walker or Stanford's Jayne Appel and Kayla Pedersen.

She paused before replying. Or not.

"I'm not going to answer that because they're all coming back," said Turner Thorne. "You have to play them differently. Appel's one of the best centers in the country and she's very difficult to shut down. On the other hand you have Walker who's a lot more experienced than Pedersen. But for Stanford, when you take Candice Wiggins and add her to mix that changes things.  It'll be an easier question to answer next year when Wiggins is gone."

Hampton was asked about her thoughts about the UCLA-Stanford semifinal, but was savvy enough to not say anything that would end up on a bulletin board, Internet message board or Facebook page.

"Both teams are really good and it will be a really good game," said Hampton. "They split in conference, so I'm going to go out and spectate like you guys."
